The Latest Trends in Horror Games - And Where The Genre Is Heading!

Gothic Girl | November 03, 2008 | Blog | PC Playstation 2  | views: 4791
"When it comes to horror in games, there are a few things that are givens: it will likely be twisted, bloody, and terrifying. In other words, my kind of game. The genres of such games aren’t quite as predictable, however, ranging anywhere from RPGs to first-person shooters, and rightfully so; why limit a fun thing like terror to just one genre? Nevertheless, when looking at the overlying themes of these diverse games, trends have been emerging, giving everyone a glimpse of where things are pos..."

Tycho from Penny Arcade talks about how scary Fatal Frame IV is ... and he hasn't played it yet!

Gothic Girl | August 09, 2008 | Blog | Wii  | views: 3342
"I've been reserving a portion of my consciousness for Fatal Frame on the Wii, with the thought that its core gameplay (killing ghosts with cameras) would be vastly improved by a pointing device. I always forget when I buy these Goddamned games how horrifying they are, and watching a few videos of the new one has convinced me not to buy it, so maybe this isn't good marketing. The menacing spectres often have something about them that is... wrong, on some level, which is how Japanese horror in ..."

When "hardcore" games are released on Wii, people still complain ...

Gothic Girl | August 08, 2008 | Blog | Wii  | views: 2177
"We've heard some quiet rumblings that Fatal Frame IV might be better if it had a little more action (the whole point of the series notwithstanding). While it's certainly not the voice of the majority, we can't help but wonder if there is a perception that some of the self-proclaimed hardest-core gamers won't be happy with anything short of a frag fest, which means that developers may be looking at either FPS games and other titles built around violence for the core contingent, casual and part..."

Is Fatal Frame IV too Western?

Gothic Girl | July 31, 2008 | Blog | Wii  | views: 2450
"We love survival horror as much as the next people but an outstanding game in this genre is few and far between. Fatal Frame is one such outstanding series that has a distinct difference between horrors primarily set in locations that appear Western such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Clock Tower and Parasite Eve 2. This leads it to stand out in the crowd, with its focus on traditional Japanese horror and Japanese characters, settings and folklore. But that may have changed in Fatal Frame 4 w..."

Why Fatal Frame is the best example of "survival horror"

Gothic Girl | July 18, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 2 Xbox  | views: 3326
"Generally, when one thinks of "Survival Horror" in the video game world, the Resident Evil series will be the first name that pops up, followed by Silent Hill. To me, they both miss the point.

While both games can fall into a "survivoristic" mode, I've never found that much horror in them. Sure, Resident Evil has zombies, or mutants or whatever, but it's always been another run-around-and-shoot-stuff-that-moves game to me. It might as well be Nazis. You are trained military with guns, fer ..."

Fatal Frame IV is STILL being ignored by Nintendo

Gothic Girl | July 15, 2008 | Blog | Wii E3 2008  | views: 1784
"Fatal Frame. A popular horror franchise out of Japan. All previous titles in the series have appeared on non-Nintendo systems. Mask of the Lunar Eclipse, however, is a Wii exclusive. And it's headed by Grasshopper Manufacture's Suda 51 (No More Heroes, Killer 7), perhaps the only person living who could possibly inject new levels of weird and gruesome into the already super-spooky Fatal Frame franchise. Now, let's add to all of this that the Fatal Frame series has always delivered pretty grap..."

Shame on you Nintendo and Tecmo! Do you even care about Fatal Frame?

Gothic Girl | July 08, 2008 | Blog | Wii  | views: 1479
"I support Tecmo full heartedly. Even though sometimes all they wish to talk about is DOA or Ninja Gaiden.

However, the lack of love for Fatal Frame IV is starting to really hit me. I mean, I understand that Nintendo is responsible for the publishing of this game...but if you went to Tecmo's (Japan) main website, you would barely see the game at all (save for a link).
All it's other games coming out are being featured on the BIG screen...but no...not Fatal Frame.

When I heard Nintendo ..."

Fatal Frame IV - Break Down and Speculations

Gothic Girl | June 19, 2008 | Blog | Wii  | views: 2992
"So I thought it was time for a break down of Fatal Frame 4 from what we know. Beyond the Camera len's translations

What about the name of the game? "The Mask of the Lunar Eclipse"? What significance does that bear?
The only reference I could find to an eclipse was the Shinto sun goddess "Amarterasu" who caused an eclipse by sealing a cave, from what I've read. Hurriedly, on the subject, the world was later saved by a sumo (which, whilst saying something for the bravery of the sumo, doesn'..."

Why do people INSIST that survival horrors are based on true stories?

Gothic Girl | June 07, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 2 Playstation 3  | views: 2709
"Fatal Frame: a true story?
Not likely, though apparently this is how the game was advertised outside of Japan.

I remember hearing something about this a long time ago. Naturally I dismissed it, but it turns out it has been doing the rounds on the 'net since 2002. Feeding off the fanfare from import remakes of the time (like Ring) there were tons of websites, not only claiming to be the true mythology of the Himuro Mansion, but also some saying, (and here's an example of the worst), that s..."

Why is Fatal Frame so underrated?

Gothic Girl | June 06, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 2 Xbox  | views: 2270
"Fans have suggested:

1. Limited Marketing and exposure
To be frank Fatal Frame's publishers were useless. The series was barely advertised outside Japan and as a result didnt sell as well as Tecmo would have liked. Little information was revealed before each game's release. Few screens were released but did little to show newcomers what the games were about. Japanese trailers were also released in the west which confused people rather than interested them. All in all it did nothing to per..."

Understanding Japanese horror games ... and why they do better than American horrors

Gothic Girl | May 31, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 3 Wii  | views: 2290
"Curl up with your favorite horror movie, game, or book, and pay close attention; beyond the screams and the blood there is a whole culture hiding.

Western audiences often experience long-distance culture shock when faced with media created by the Japanese for the Japanese. Despite efforts to tailor Japanese works for the American market, we are often confronted with cultural signals that are uniquely Japanese and have no direct equivalent Western culture. This has lead to a lot of head-scr..."

Memorable moments in Fatal Frame

Gothic Girl | May 19, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 2 Playstation 3  | views: 4792
"Fatal Frame 4 will soon grace its presence on the Wii. In the meantime we take a look at some of the memorable moments in Fatal Frame. Jumps, bumps and atmosphere. Fatal Frame has it all.

Meeting Yoshino and the Priestess

Meeting the antagonist in a Fatal Frame game is always a memorable moment. The main character Rei is trapped in the spooky Manor of Sleep, a corrupt and haunting world that appears only in her nightmares. So it is a surprise for both the player and Rei when she stumbl..."

Fatal Frame
Sweet faced college student Miku enters the haunted Himuro Mansion to look for her missing brother Mafuyu. Armed with only a flashlight, she searches throughout the Mansion, which has a long history of bloodshed, curses, and horrific rituals.
Little does she realize that by entering the house Miku has stirred the long resting spirits- and they aren't happy with their intruder.

Being the first game in the series FF1 brought a new terror to the survival horror ..."

No hype for Fatal Frame IV ... "Wii owners don't want to play M Rated games"

Gothic Girl | May 02, 2008 | Blog | Playstation 3 Wii  | views: 2706
"Fatal Frame 4 was announced at the beginning of 2008 and since then there has been little news on the newest installment in the popular survival horror. The game is being released this Summer and fans are beginning to get worried with the limited information that has been released.
Visit any Fatal Frame 4 discussion board and you will be met with few posts and even fewer people who know the game exists. This is a noticeable contrast to the thriving discussion boards of other survival horror ..."
