Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King

"Like its retail games, the Wii’s downloadable titles on WiiWare often get a bad rap. The two line ups are very similar; though there is an overwhelming glut of undesirable titles, a batch of quirky, unique and fun games exist below the surface."

"Final Fantasy is one of the most famous franchises in gaming history and for good reason. The gameplay has evolved over the years and pleased gamers on everything from the original NES to the WonderSwan and still entrances gamers on the PS3 and 360. But there's another appeal factor about this series."

I had the pleasure of recording a podcast with three Final Fantasy enthusiasts. I did not talk and they spoke on everything within the series. See the description. download through iTunes, though Zune, or download the mp3 directly

During Satoru Iwata's keynote at the 2009 Game Developer's Conference, the Nintendo CEO announced two new WiiWare titles: one that we already knew about, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, and one we didn't: My Life as a Darklord: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, the sequel to last year's My Life as a King. Also announced by Iwata is that the Final Fantasy series will make its way to the Virtual Console.

You can view the rest of the happenings during Iwata's keynote here.

The top 20 WiiWare titles for the US as of the 10th of December. The results are based upon what is currently the highest selling, not over time.

World of Goo is doing well for itself, continuing to take top spot. This is followed by the new of the old classic Tetris Party. In third place is My Aquarium, a WiiWare title which at first didn't look to be popular and suffered from negative speculation.

Within the past several years, Square Enix has been on the ball with remakes of their classic Final Fantasy games. And rumors of a remake for the huge and popular Final Fantasy 7 have been been buzzing around the net.

Square Enix president Yoichi Wada explains how there has been a remake boom lately, "The price of games is high, and consumers tend to be wary of buying games they are unfamiliar with".

That's an interesting reason for the increase of remake talk, but SE fans hope they do...

Fans of the Crystal Chronicles series have been waiting for this day for a long time now, but their patience has payed off. Today Square Enix announced the latest game in the series, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time, to be released on the 29th of January, 2009 in Japan.

This week's North American Wii Shop Channel update isn't going to stand up to one of Japan's best weeks ever, but it's not going to come close either. While these are two great games, you can't help but think of what could have been. One WiiWare game and one Virtual Console game this week, folks.

The WiiWare game this week is Magetica Twist, already released in Japan and Europe as Minna de Puzzloop and Actionloop Twist, respectively. It is the latest evolution of the original Puzz Loop ...

"The allure just isn't there anymore for the Final Fantasy titles and we have to ask why. Loyal fans try to create hype, but the games are just not combining new and old expectations. Maybe it's because every game, we have to warm up to new characters and worlds. Square sets itself up for hit and miss titles with no character regularity. The only motif running through the series I can identify is a blond guy and clueless protagonists. Most of the recent Final Fantasy games (dare I say Square ..."

"Packing a launch portfolio containing some surprisingly compelling titles, WiiWare, as the new service is called, certainly has all the right ideas behind it. It's intended to support smaller developers in much the same way as competing services on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Distributing games directly to consumers via digital download services cuts out both publisher and retailer, meaning developers can afford to take more risks, and -- in theory -- give consumers like us a better deal.

Try it..."

Square Enix has put up a new site for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King and it has a lot of content to enjoy. It requires a sign-in so you can access the site as a member. Once you are inside of the website, you will be able to download stuff for free, send messages to the developers of the game, and play a new mini-game. According to the website, more information and content will be revealed once a certain number of people visit the website. Signing up to become a member i...

"Australians did not have to wait long after their overseas cousins for Nintendo's WiiWare service, with the first downloadable games available on the Wii Shop Channel from today.

Whereas Nintendo's Virtual Console service allows consumers to download classic games from systems like the SNES, N64 and Megadrive, WiiWare offers brand new titles and is an opportunity for video game developers to create innovative new games."

After first launching in Japan, and two weeks ago reaching North American shores, WiiWare, Nintendo's new development platform now makes its way to European shores, bring it six games available at launch, with all of the games drawing from Nintendo of Europe's released list of launch window games.

The six titles made available for European WiiWare are the following:

  • Dr. Mario & Germ Buster, Nintendo, 1-4 Players, 1000 Points
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, Square Eni...
  • WiiWare, Nintendo's new development platform, is now available. Much akin to the Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Store, WiiWare allows developers and teams with smaller budgets to bring their unique ideas for the Wii to fruition. WiiWare has already launched in Japan.

  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, Square Enix, 1 Player, 1500 Points

  • Cult favorite SNES RPG Earthbound is one of the games constantly clamored for by fans for release on the Virtual Console. Perhaps, they'll get their wish.

It was discovered today that Earthbound has been rated by the ESRB for the Wii, with an E rating.

The question is, now, will it be the next Super Mario RPG/Shining Force II, or will it be one of the 200+ games available on the Virtual Console and actually release?

    Only time will tell.

In other news, another game rated by the ES...
