Game Podunk introduces a new editorial series, "What If," where Podunk editors formulate bizarre, far-fetched, and possibly believable outcomes to popular questions that gamers ponder when playing their games. For the first "What If" series, Podunk editors grab a rather unforgettable scene from the beloved game, Final Fantasy VII, in light of the upcoming release of Final Fantasy XIII.
So sit back and enjoy some of the strange answers to: "What If: Aerith Never Died by Sephiroth's Blade?"
Despite the declining hardware sales, the PSP had one of its best years ever in 2009 in terms of quality software thanks to excellent lineup lead by a slew of great exclusive games.
"The PSP has not done as well as its competitor, the DS Lite/DSi. This doesn't mean that it doesn't have any games worth getting. In fact, the PSP has a great selection of hits released just within the past few months. With the recent release of the PSPgo and digital downloads sold alongside physical copies of games, fans of most genres will find a game they can play on the go. Here is a list of the top five PSP games I recommend for gifts."
"Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Starry Sky (Nintendo DS) – 4 million units total (all in Japan)
Batman: Arkham Asylum (Playstation 3 and Xbox 360) – 2.63 million units total (1.54 million in North America and 1.09 million in Europe)
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (Nintendo DS) – 1.22 million units total (0.53 million in Japan, 0.59 million in North America and 0.1 million in Europe
Dissidia: Final Fantasy (PSP) – 0.72 million units total (0.36 million in North America and 0.36 m..."
Dissidia: Final Fantasy wasn't quite as successful as Square Enix had hoped, leading them to question whether a sequel was worth developing. In an attempt to boost the game's sales, Dissidia is now available on the Playstation Store.
"Dissidia: Final Fantasy has now been out for a few months in the West, but its sales figures are actually quite low in comparison to those from Japan, and even lower when compared to that of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII's.
While this might not seem like a big deal on the surface, it may actually prohibit the release of any kind of sequel, as Square Enix stated that a sequel would be based on its Western sales."
"Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Final Fantasy in style, Dissidia Final Fantasy is an all new, unique action fighting game. Available on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) throughout Europe now in both standard and Collector's Edition releases, Dissidia Final Fantasy sees warriors collide as the most impressive dream-match roster is assembled from the Final Fantasy series. Memorable heroes and villains are newly re-envisioned by famed character designer: Tetsuya Nomura."

"Dissidia: Final Fantasy is billed as a fighting game, but you won’t find sideways Hadoukens or ultra combos being unleashed here. In fact, it’s far from a traditional fighter that you would find in the arcade or being played with a fight stick. No, Dissidia pits some of the most memorable, endearing, and even the most despicable Final Fantasy characters against one another in a knock-down, drag out battle of epic proportions all in the name of proclaiming a victor between the Goddess of H..."

"Crossover fighting games are nothing new, and they always tend to have one thing in common: From Super Smash Bros. to Marvel vs Capcom 2, they’re less about exploring what happens when disparate universes come together, and more about seeing how hard those universes can wordlessly kick each other in the teeth. It’s almost always fun, but for fans invested in the stories and characters of the crossover properties, it often feels like something’s missing from the experience.
To say Dis..."
"Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy
Mana Khemia 2's developer, Gust, has a knack for creating item-crafting-heavy games that are actually fun to play. As it has been pumping out Atelier Iris games continually since 1997, the company has had a lot of time to refine its games' combat and synthesis systems. The first Mana Khemia, often considered the spiritual successor to the Atelier Iris series, can be seen as the culmination of all that Gust has learned over the years, at least when it comes to..."
"Judge Gabranth of the Archadian Empire is one of several elite warriors who played a major role in the conflict between Archades and Rozarria over dominion of Ivalice. His efforts were paramount in the occupation of both Nabradia and Dalmasca, but his allegiance to the empire was ultimately shattered by the reappearance of his brother, Basch von Ronsenburg.
Although Gabranth is neutral in the current conflict between Chaos and Cosmos, he unquestionably has one of the most unusual fighting ..."
Japanese gamers have been playing Dissidia: Final Fantasy since last December, but Westerners will have to wait just a little bit longer for the English release.
In the meantime Gametrailers have previewed the upcoming American version, showing gamers what they can expect to see and also what new extras the Western version will have...
Dissidia: Final Fantasy's American release is just around the corner, so here's a glimpse at how the English version looks and sounds. Naturally, the villains have far better voice-acting than the heroes.

"- Dissidia Final Fantasy is something of a dream project for Square Enix fans. This PSP exclusive combines the fan appeal of Super Smash Bros. with the legacy and rich character design of the Final Fantasy franchise. Dissidia borrows characters from across several Final Fantasy games and puts them together in an action-packed fighting game that's sure to hit the PSP in a big way. The game has already made quite an impact in Japan and now it's heading to the US. I had the opportunity to play a..."

Final Fantasy: Dissidia is set to hit the West this coming Summer, and the first of surely many more trailers has been released. This one isn't anything special, just a little explanation of the plot and CGI, but Square Enix should be following this with more later.
Square Enix announced today the franchise-based brawler Dissidia: Final Fantasy will be hitting Europe and PAL territories in autumn 2009. Additionally, some new screenshots have come in to complement the news.

"How many times have you been playing a video game and thought, "Geez, that character looks like so-and-so..." Well if you're like me, that happens a lot. I thought it would be a fun diversion to create a blog that highlights some of my favorite video game characters and their real-life doppelgangers. Some are obscure...some not so much. feel free to add to the list in the comments if I didn't include a pair you know. One rule though: if a video game character was modeled after a real person (..."
"It's hard finding a trailer that sticks with you and keeps itself glued to the walls of your memories. Trailers that manage to do such a feat are easily worthy of some kind of media recognition. So in the good spirit of acknowledging awesomeness where awesomeness deserves recognition, Blend Games has proudly put together a list of the Top 10 Coolest Game Trailers of 2008. So without wasting a whole lot of words on a pointless lead-in to the list, you can check out our top ten picks for the co..."
When it was first announced that Terra Branford was appearing in Final Fantasy Dissidia, many fans were disappointed that her updated version did not feature her trademark green hair. Well, for a small in-game price you can unlock her original green hair design as an alternate costume. Good news for retro Final Fantasy fans who wouldn't have her any other way.
And, of course, the only screenshots that show this "alternate costume" include shameless close-ups of Terra's crotch. It is also p...
"Square Enix, Inc.., The publisher of Square Enix interactive entertainment products in North America, announced that DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY for the PSP system will be available mid-year 2009 in North America. This seems like even worse news for Europeans who will have to wait even longer to get their hands on the title."
While we have certainly seen plenty of how the combat and character mechanics will work in Dissidia, we have been quite ignorant up until now about how exactly the story mode will function. A recent video on Eurogamer though gives a good deal of insight into this, showing the movement grid, ordinary enemy battles and boss encounters. It's all in Japanese but you can still learn a good bit from it.
"Dissidia: Final Fantasy may not quite have an official US release announcement, but it's hitting Japanese PSPs in a scant two weeks, much to the excitement of FF fans and fanfic writers. Work on the game is done, and a roundtable of Square Enix developers -- creative producer Tetsuya Nomura, senior director Takeshi Arakawa, planning director Mitsunori Takahashi, and main programmer Ryuji Ikeda -- sat down with Weekly Famitsu magazine to discuss some of the latest revelations about their littl..."
Thanks to VideoGamerX and some enthusiastic and helpful fans over on QJ, we've gleaned yet more information about Dissidia: Final Fantasy, with some scans to go along with it.
In short, FFXII will be represented, there will be replays you can save to your memory stick, and fangirls/groupies everywhere can collectively lose their minds at a shirtless Sephiroth. Many more details below, as translated by QJ.
While I think Square Enix are getting kind of greedy to be forcing people to buy a book to learn info about their titles I'm sure most fans won't matter. On Amazon Japan a second Cloud book is up, to be released on December 12th, already announced to be packed with screenshots, art and info on all the games and products mentioned below. Let's hope its actually something substantial this time, rather than the tiny fragments we usually get.
I think everyone after Advent Children wanted to play a game with the ability to do moves like Cloud and Sephiroth, and so far Dissidia is making a good attempt. A new gameplay video has emerged, featuring every one's favourite spiky haired protagonist pitted against his katana wielding nemesis. The video shows off a far more movement orientated fight, complete with classic music and both of the combatants using Limit Breaks. Go to the source to watch it.
With the Japanese release of Final Fantasy: Dissidia coming soon (December 18 2008), it's understandable that many fans of the Final Fantasy franchise are excited, and what's more exciting is the information revealed in Famitsu magazine, which is given to us, courtesy of IGN.
The information relates in particular to the Multiplayer Mode and in particular, the Ad-hoc Party mode for the game and how it will all work out.
[Discussion in the Final Fantasy: Dissidia Forum]
Not exactly mind blowing, but a scan of a poster has turned up on the Internet, apparently a foldout from V Jump Magazine. It features all the characters, both good and bad to appear in Final Fantasy Dissidia, which is useful if your a little confused. It also shows the costumes and equipment they'll all be using, handy since most of the characters have had more than one costume and multiple weapons.
Within the past several years, Square Enix has been on the ball with remakes of their classic Final Fantasy games. And rumors of a remake for the huge and popular Final Fantasy 7 have been been buzzing around the net.
Square Enix president Yoichi Wada explains how there has been a remake boom lately, "The price of games is high, and consumers tend to be wary of buying games they are unfamiliar with".
That's an interesting reason for the increase of remake talk, but SE fans hope they do...
"If last week, we saw Shonen Jump feature Square Enix's FF6 duo, this week it's Famitsu's turn to bring Terra Branford and Kefka Palazzo into the Dissidia: Final Fantasy spotlight. There are a lot of things revealed in today's scans, so we'll take it blow-by-blow."
Yes the impossible has happened, someone has actually managed to sneak a video out of the Square Enix closed Mega Theater and live to tell the tale. The bootlegger caught footage of Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, The 3rd Birthday and even a bit of Dissidia on tape, so sit down and have a watch if you have even a passing interest in any of these titles. Download them if you want to keep them, Square Enix will likely go on a crusade to make sure the public continues...
"IGN;
I also played a few rounds as Tidus, who seemed to be more suited for mid to long-ranged combat. He could summon (and then subsequently kick) a Blitzball at will and also had a powerful combo as his disposal. With the push of a button, Tidus flipped across the ground and performed a fantastic set of spins before jumping up and landing a powerful strike on his enemy.
Although I only just scratched the surface of what Dissidia has to offer, considering all the special techniques, wal..."
More of the interview with FF Dissidia Director Takeshi Arakawa has been translated and even more tantalizing info confirmed for the game. The best bits being confirmed Wi-Fi play, the ability to trade and (presumably) create playing styles for the CPU controlled characters to use, the promise that customization for characters is so in depth that even in battles between the same characters the battles would be different, and that players can save the best bits of the game and access them from...
"When asked about the characters in the game, Arakawa explained that the full roster was already decided right from the start. And yes, they took characters from FFI to FFX only, and nothing after.
As a recap (I've lost count of how many times I've done this already...), here are the list of characters which have already been confirmed:
* FF: Warrior of Light - Garland
* FFII: Firion - Emperor Palamecia
* FFIII: Onion Knight - Cloud of Darkness
* FFIV: Cecil Harvey - G..."
Round one began a while ago, but you can't stop Final Fantasy ! In these two videos the battle between the Warrior of Light and Garland continues, but who will come out on top this time ?
[Dissidia: Final Fantasy Forum]
With, you guessed it, another Closed Mega Theatre !
... Don't you just love Square Enix ?
Besides the infamous theatre Square Enix will also have demo booths for Dissidia Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days amongst others. Looking good !
Whilst this isn't the first Dissidia gameplay video we've seen, it does mark the first time we've seen the game from the perspective of the bad guy, in this case Garland from Final Fantasy I.

There are some new concept art and screenshots available for Square Enix's upcoming action game, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, which is set to hit Japanese shelves on December 18th. The duo from Final Fantasy IV is shown off today, with Cecil Harvey and Golbez both becoming playable in this 20th anniversary game.
Cecil will have the ability to switch between his Paladin and Dark Knight jobs. The Paladin job is better at air combat, quicker, and is more defense-oriented, whereas the Dark Knigh...
Final Fantasy: Dissidia, the highly anticipated PSP action title starring Final Fantasy characters. May well have the most hard to get Limited Edition ever. The PSP 3000 bundle will first off only be available in Japan, and even then only from September 22nd to 28th. Next it can only be pre-ordered from the official Square Enix store and you have to be a member. And to top it all off your chances are random as pre-ordering only gives a chance at as it is all a lottery drawn.

Now that Dissidia Final Fantasy has a confirmed release date of December 18th in Japan, Square Enix have been updating the official website regularly with new videos. Today the DKS3713 Promotion video was added to the site and it features an old favourite.

The last video released for Final Fantasy Dissidia showed the Cloud of Darkness vs. Onion Knight and this weeks video shows father vs. son, Tidus vs. Jecht !
[Discuss in the Dissidia Forum.]
Gamekyo revealed a video showing a whole battle between Onion Knight and Cloud of Darkness. You can see some of the RPG elements that were said to be featured in the game such as being able to Level Up, change classes in-battle and apparently on special occasions being able to choose an attack from a list that looks familiar to Final Fantasy fans.

Here are some new screenshots of Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep for PSP, 358/2 Days for DS, and Coded for Mobile, courtesy of NeoGAF. As well, a few are available for Final Fantasy: Dissidia for PSP.

You can see a little gameplay footage of Dissidia -Final Fantasy-, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days in this trailer here.
Square Enix have released a truck-load of screenshots from all their newest games: Final Fantasy XIII. Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Parasite Eve 3: The 3rd Birthday, Final Fantasy: Dissidia, Final Fantasy XIII: Dissidia, the various new Kingdom Hearts games, and so on.
Most of them have already been seen in low-quality magazine scans, but some (namely the wedding shots from Parasite Eve) are 100% brand spankin' new.

Trailer and demo impressions are coming in thick and fast now from the Square Enix Party; here's IGNs take on what the PSP had to show.
Dissidia Final Fantasy Hands-on.
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep Hands-on.
Gemaga has been liveblogging Square Enix's DKΣ3713 Private Party that is currently underway right now, with a bunch of megatons and other news to report (via GAF and other blogs):
"The latest scan of Famitsu July 2008 shows Onion Knight and Cloud of Darkness from Final Fantasy III joining the fold of Final Fantasy heroes and villains. Nothing much is said of what their moves will be, but you can take comfort in knowing they're joining the fight. Remember: the original cast of Final Fantasy III had no names and were all Onion Knights at the beginning, so those wanting to ask why he has no name should take this into consideration.
Now what games remain? FFIV, FFV, FFVI..."
"DISSIDIA: Final Fantasy? 50 percent done. So says the game's character designer Tetsuya Nomura in the upcoming issue of Japanese game mag Famitsu. This shouldn't come as a huge surprise as only half the cast has been revealed. That, and Square Enix does like to take its sweet time putting out its games. There's no rush, we guess."
It looks like there's another duo making it to Dissidia: Tidus and his old man Jecht. So we got this characters as of now:
Final Fantasy: Warrior of Light and Garland;
Final Fantasy II: Firion and Emperor Palamecia;
Final Fantasy VII: Sephiroth (question is: when will Cloud be revelead? =P);
Final Fantasy VIII: Squall Leonhart and Ultimecia;
Final Fantasy IX: Zidane Tribal and Kuja;
Final Fantasy X: Tidus and Jecht
So will we be seeing anymore main characters and their arch-enemies...
Square Enix decided to do something different for their party this year. DK Σ 3713 isn't just a random combination of letters, numbers and symbols. It's actually the initials of all the major games that will be attending The Square Enix Party 2008 ! And those games are :
PS3 :

PSP :
- Dissidia Final Fantasy

"The allure just isn't there anymore for the Final Fantasy titles and we have to ask why. Loyal fans try to create hype, but the games are just not combining new and old expectations. Maybe it's because every game, we have to warm up to new characters and worlds. Square sets itself up for hit and miss titles with no character regularity. The only motif running through the series I can identify is a blond guy and clueless protagonists. Most of the recent Final Fantasy games (dare I say Square ..."
"A fighting game based off the Final Fantasy franchise brings up memories of Ehrgeiz, the old arcade and PlayStation 1 fighter that featured several characters from Final Fantasy VII. But to our pleasant surprise, Dissidia is actually nothing like Ehrgeiz, and in fact, we get the feeling it might even be fun enough to stand on its own without the FF characters.
Unlike most traditional versus-style fighters, Dissidia is more akin to a one-on-one combat game. Characters are free to move aroun..."
EGM have dedicated a page of this month's issue to the fairly large array of Final Fantasy games that have recently (and not-so-recently) been announced, yet haven't had much information divulged since then. The magazine tried their best to piece together what little info has been released.
It's a shame that one-and-a-half years have passed since Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII were announced, and yet fans still don't know much about the game's details, let alone the chara...

"Japanese gaming magazine Dengeki PlayStation, through PSPHyper, finds out why Final Fantasy Dissidia's nature is to be an action game. According to the report, this was because it was thought that a 3D action game using the expertise of the team of Yousuke Shiokawa was "the best way to gather all the characters from the Final Fantasy series."
Who is Mr. Shiokawa? Square Enix's Yousuke Shiokawa was the lead programmer for boss battles in Kingdom Hearts II. He is now directing Final Fantasy..."
Attendants of the Square Enix 2007 Festival received a special promo cd, which was soon after ripped by a GameFAQs poster NeoStrikeDamon. The first details on the PSP's new Final Fantasy game have been revealed by Jump Magazine. In what some might consider the ultimate Final Fantasy crossover, Dissidia is bringing past characters of the Final Fantasy series together. Three characters so far have been revealed:

Square Enix has opened up a new website for Final Fantasy Dissidia. Other than the flashy intro there's no information. However, the game will be released for the Playstation Portable gaming system. The logo this time looks to be Shiiva and Ifrit, perhaps? No matter, it still looks good. So, for all you lucky PSP owners, prepare for a FF game.
