Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift

The Call of Duty video game series has changed the way people think about the entertainment business. Avatar made $232 million globally in its first five days of release. Call Of Duty: Black Ops made $650 million. An infographic on GNVR gives us an visual look full of details showing us just how big the Call of Duty video game franchise really is.

"Final Fantasy is one of the most famous franchises in gaming history and for good reason. The gameplay has evolved over the years and pleased gamers on everything from the original NES to the WonderSwan and still entrances gamers on the PS3 and 360. But there's another appeal factor about this series."

"With more than a dozen Final Fantasy games out there now, it seems a little bit weird that we haven't been treated to even that many distinct characters. Alright, maybe that's a bit harsh, but it sure seems like we've been sticking pretty close to the same half dozen guys and gals, with a few minor differences in hairstyle. Maybe that's just the way people are. I'm sure you've encountered, or have been one of these types in your own nihilist-villain-and-summoned-dragon-free life. Either some..."

I had the pleasure of recording a podcast with three Final Fantasy enthusiasts. I did not talk and they spoke on everything within the series. See the description. download through iTunes, though Zune, or download the mp3 directly

"When Electronic Arts announced their plans to produce a video game based on the literary classic Dante's Inferno, gamers were outraged by more than just the title's uncanny resemblance to the God of War franchise. Question the literacy of those who indulge in our hobby all you want, but the generally negative reactions that greeted the interactive adaptation of Dante Alighieri's epic poem speak well for our kind's classical training. To the credit of these dissenters, Visceral Games really d..."

"It's been four full years since the introduction of the Nintendo DS. This dual-screen, touch-screen handheld was a system first received with skepticism when it launched in the US in November of 2004. Over time, it began to prove itself. The dual-screened handheld that had everyone, gamers and developers alike, scratching their heads has become the most popular and most purchased piece of video game hardware.

But it's not on the strength of the hardware alone. The reason why Nintendo's DS ..."

As part of their Cheers & Tears feature for the summer, IGN's next segment takes a look at 5 strategy games on the DS (which there are plenty of) you should play and another 5 to avoid. The cheers section is comprised of Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Knights in the Nightmare, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, Age of Empires: Mythologies, and Lock's Quest. The tears section contains Shogun Empires, Steel Horizon, The Seetlers, Command & Destroy, and Desktop Tower Defense. Notably absent from the c...

Within the past several years, Square Enix has been on the ball with remakes of their classic Final Fantasy games. And rumors of a remake for the huge and popular Final Fantasy 7 have been been buzzing around the net.

Square Enix president Yoichi Wada explains how there has been a remake boom lately, "The price of games is high, and consumers tend to be wary of buying games they are unfamiliar with".

That's an interesting reason for the increase of remake talk, but SE fans hope they do...

"My biggest rant by far would be the main character's clothing of choice. It is one UGLY looking outfit. I know Square-Enix usually doesn't do this bad with the outfits. I remember when I first saw Vaan in FF XII, my eyes were already starting to hurt, but this is beyond ugly. The colors all clash. Come on, what are they thinking about by putting a red hat with that green clover/sash thing? Is it Christmas or something? As you may know there's a class system where you can change classes..."

"The allure just isn't there anymore for the Final Fantasy titles and we have to ask why. Loyal fans try to create hype, but the games are just not combining new and old expectations. Maybe it's because every game, we have to warm up to new characters and worlds. Square sets itself up for hit and miss titles with no character regularity. The only motif running through the series I can identify is a blond guy and clueless protagonists. Most of the recent Final Fantasy games (dare I say Square ..."

"A sequel to Square Enix's Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA), Grimoire of the Rift features a return to the more storybook-like version of Ivalice, as opposed to the political intrigue and murderous themes seen in Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX) and Final Fantasy XII (PS2).

The game features seven playable races and a slew of new jobs, classes, and sidequests. The oft-maligned Law system has been revamped and retooled, offering a much more forgiving experience than its predecessor. And natura..."

Contrasting with Famitsu's numbers, Media Create has the PS3 tracking barely above the Wii. Still notable, but the overall drop is pretty shocking. We can start entertaining various possibilities over what will happen in the next few weeks to these two streams.

The top software seller this week for a second time is Mario Party DS, selling 116k units. The second-seller this week is the newcomer Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii, selling 83k units. Rounding out the top five ...

Pretty crazy week, this week.

The top software seller this week is Mario Party DS, selling 235k units, followed by the PS3 version of Shin Sangoku Musou 5. Rounding out the top five are last week's #1 , Super Mario Galaxy (Wii - 75k), Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift (NDS - 23k), and the 360 version of Shin Sangoku Musou 5 (360 - 22k).

However, the more shocking is the hardware numbers, with the PS3 selling 56k units, and the Wii still selling at a respectable 35k. So, s...

What's surprising in these charts isn't what is #1, but rather, the amount at which the top game sold. Many expected higher, but this is still a decent number for only three-four days of sales.

Topping the chart this week is none other than Super Mario Galaxy for the Nintendo Wii, pushing around 251k units. In the #2 spot is a shocker, Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation for the Xbox 360, selling around 77k units. Rounding out the top five are last week's #1, Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Gri...

From the outset, this past week's Media Create numbers indicate a strong sales week, but the numbers quickly drop, with a substantial decrease from #1 to #3. Also, seven out of the top ten are new releases.

Topping this week's list is Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift for the Nintendo DS, selling 142k copies of the game in its first week. Coming second is the sequel to a Gust RPG, Ar tonelico 2: Sekai ni Hibiku Shoujotachi no Metafalica for the PS2, coming in at 72k units. ...
