"Well, dear friends and plastic peripheral obsessed gamers, it seems that the franchise that kick started the huge market of music games has finally decided to hang up its axe for good, as Activision today announced that their planned Guitar Hero for 2011 has ceased production, citing that the decline in sales in recent years has finally prompted them to call it a day. It's a sad day for the gaming franchise which kick started a musical game revolution, cluttering up our homes with plastic ins..."

"Nickelback represents the new face of modern rock, always pushing the envelope with their generally badass sound and gravelly vocals. They’re probably the only band around today that you’d never accuse of being unoriginal or formulaic, so their inclusion in Guitar Hero is practically destined. It’s also clear from looking at them that these dudes bag a lot of pelt."

"With more sequels to both the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchise that we can shake a rusty spoon at, its time to take a long, hard look at these games and see where they are lacking. Both franchises are prone to releasing sequels which don’t introduce enough new features in them, but Guitar Hero in particular seems to churn out new games more often than most. Music games are becoming more and more like the FIFA music game, with a new iteration having to be released every year for seemingly l..."

Playboy and Heidi Klum's Guitar Hero commercials mustn't have been sexy enough, because Activision have upped the ante by releasing a raunchier ad featuring model Marisa Miller in her underwear. It ended up getting banned from TV...

As inevitable as the sun rising tomorrow, a new Guitar Hero game has been announced. Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock will be the sixth iteration in the series, not counting band games and spin offs such as Band Hero and DJ Hero. A release date has also been placed at September 21st, and more information will presumably be released at E3.

To me, Guitar Hero is a guilty pleasure - I have five of them and I've rented/played two more. I'm not sure I'll get Warriors of Rock, but I'll keep an eye ...

"According to sources at both Activision and Neversoft, after the developer completes work on technically-unannounced-but-we-all-know-its-coming Guitar Hero 6, the publisher will hand the groundbreaking franchise over to Vicarious Visions. Vicarious Visions has some history with the Guitar Hero franchise, having worked on the Wii ports of every GH console game since Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. The studio works on the Nintendo DS Guitar Hero: On Tour series as well."

"The Guitar Hero music library continues to evolve and expand as November brings a great collection of new and classic tracks from some of rock’s best-loved artists. Fans can download tracks from artists including Lenny Kravitz and KISS and – for the first time - they can import tracks directly from Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero into their Guitar Hero music library."

Bobby Kotick's logic has spread to Daniel Rosensweig, CEO of Guitar Hero.

20% of households with consoles own the game. And the GH CEO wants to go after the remaining 80%? Truly it doesn't mean that 80% do not quite like rhythm games or don't have the coordination/rhythm needed.

Until we see a better game (singular here, not plural; as in ONE game, just like Rock band), Guitar Hero will always be seen as saturated.

Open the pool up for others while you're at it. Rhythm Heaven over...

"Looking at music games as part of our NPD analysis, Gamasutra has discovered that U.S. Guitar Hero/Rock Band revenues are down 49% year on year, as discounted hardware and over 20 SKUs flood the market.

June 2009 was the second consecutive month without a Rock Band or Guitar Hero title in the top 20 software titles. The last time the software charts went two months without one of these franchises was in September and October 2007, right before the launch of Guitar Hero II on the PlayStatio..."

"Bobby Kotick’s choice words for Sony sparked outrage amongst PS3 fans, and quickly became one of the most controversial subjects of the summer. The outspoken CEO suggested Activision would drop support for PlayStation if Sony didn’t lower the price point on the PlayStation 3. The glare of the corporate flames shine a light on what is actually a very bold statement, coming from a publisher responsible for some of this years most expensive video games. Basically Activision has a lot of nerve."

"Following yesterday’s revelation of the first twenty five songs set to be included on the Guitar Hero 5 set list yesterday, Activision have announced that the Victory Track Pack is now live for Xbox 360, PLAYSTATION 3 and Wii for Guitar Hero World Tour. The Victory Track Pack features three singles; A Day To Remember’s NJ Legion Iced Tea, The Sleeping with Bomb the World and Silverstein’s I Am The Arsonist."

James Walker has had it. This goes past Bobby Kotick's recent dropping Sony support threats. This has been a long time coming. Someone needs to call Bobby out on the things he is doing with what was a company we all could at the very least say used to be "better than EA"

Speaking to The Times, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick yet again expressed his desire for Sony to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 console, but this time went one step further. Kotick threatened that the publisher, the largest third party video game company, may have to pull its support for both Sony platforms, the PS3 and PSP, if a price cut for the PS3 doesn't happen and sales continue to lag.

Said Kotick:

quote Bobby Kotick, Activison Blizzard CEO

"I'm getting concerned about ...

Unless you want to know which actor played a certain role in a movie or game, people generally don't bother watching credits. Usually consisting of black background with white scrolling text, they're boring. So it's always nice when developers try to spice up the ending credits in an attempt to get you to watch them. Here are Gamesradar's Best And Worst Ending Credits In Games.

"GI: Well jumping from the music itself to the features of the game, are there ideas or features that you think are central or essential to have in a DJ simulator, like what DJ Hero is going to be?

DJ: Yeah—it’s an interesting question and it’s something that I think internally the developers kicked back and forth a lot, and I think even within the last few months there’s been some debate about all of the different—and that was actually one of the first things that I wanted to know when I g..."

"Welcome to the weekly round-up of DLC content expected to hit Xbox LIVE in the week ahead. We have tried our best of compile all the planned updates into one, so if we forgot any, please forgive us. Not much is being released this week, but Fable II fans should be happy at least."

"The worldwide hit video game "Guitar Hero" could become a reality TV show and/or a real-life concert tour, people familiar with the discussions said Thursday.

"Hero" is from Activision Blizzard, a leading video game publisher that is looking to turn some of its games into TV and film properties.

Activision's cross-platform interests don't end at "Hero" either; discussions are under way to turn the "World of Warcraft" and "Call of Duty" video games into movies.

"They are being talked ..."

Remember the fuss we caused with that Bayonneta: God of War killer article? That was fun, wasn't it?

Guerilla Games' (Killzone 2) Managing Director Herman Hulst is on our side with this whole thing, introducing some democracy into the mix.

Basically, for those that still bother with this 'franchise X killer' nonsense, grow up, cause the people that make these games sure aren't doing it!

"Metal mavens, pop stars and global invaders can rejoice this May with three new downloadable Track Packs coming to Activision’s Guitar Hero World Tour. The eclectic downloadable set list opens with free music from Ferret Music and Metal Blade Records, followed by Pop from P!nk, Angels & Airwaves and OneRepublic, rounded out with three smash-hits from Europe."

"The critically acclaimed and longest-running musical at London’s prestigious Dominion Theatre, We Will Rock You - based on the music of Queen - has partnered with Activision’s Guitar Hero World Tour to offer patrons the ultimate night of rock. Before and after select performances of the hit musical, which embarks on its first UK tour this month, people will be able to rock with Guitar Hero World Tour to three of Queen’s hit tracks, C-Lebrity, Fat Bottom Girls and We Are The Champions, as well..."

Canadian development studio and port-expert, Beenox, is putting together the disc, which hits 360, PS3, PS2 and Wii in June. "Last year, after being threatened with infringement of Gibson Guitar’s U.S. Patent No. 5,990,405 (“the ‘405 Patent”), Activision, the maker of the popular video game “Guitar Hero,” filed a declaratory judgment complaint of non-infringement (details here). After two rounds of claim construction briefing, a technology tutorial, and a Markman hearing – in addition to Gibson’s counsel withdrawing from the case, the Court granted Activision’s summary judgment of non-infringement."

"Isn't playing video games the language of love? What's that you say? Is isn't? Well, it should be, because we can hardly think of a better way to spend Valentine's Day - that's this Saturday, for the uninformed - than by playing video games. Of course, being a social event that you should be enjoying with your spouse or boy/girlfriend, you'll have to make sure that the game you're playing is interesting for the other party, whether they be taking part or not. Here's our list of the top ten ga..."

Major Nelson has posted the Live Activity for this week, summing up what is being played online in the gaming world for Xbox 360. I am amazed that despite the release of World at War, this does not hinder the CoD4 community from taking down everything that isn't Halo 3. Real football (FIFA) manages to beat out American football (Madden), and surprisingly, people are still playing Grand Theft Auto.

"Having already delivered fans over 70 rockin’ downloadable tracks for Activision Publishing, Inc.’s Guitar Hero World Tour since the game’s October 2008 launch, three new Track Packs spanning a variety of musical genres and multiple artists will be available throughout February 2009 to Guitar Hero fans across the globe."

President and CEO of Activision, Mike Griffith, gave a keynote speech at CES making pretty big claims on video games and their place in the entertainment industry. Basically saying that it will own the industry. I can't deny that gaming has been on the steady rise for a little while now, and facts are music download sales are up because of music games, plus the Wii getting grandma to game... he might be onto something here.

This new peripheral from ezGear looks pretty darn sweet - it is called the You Rock Guitar and is part Guitar Hero/Rock Band controller and part real guitar to use on your PC as a MIDI instrument. It features a touch-sensitive full fret board and strings to strum. It is a pretty pricey instrument at $149, but that is cheaper than most real guitars.

"Activision is giving you a little something back in the form of five free downloadable tracks if you buy Guitar Hero: World Tour before New Year's Eve. It only applies to the "Complete Guitar Game" variety that retails for $99.99, which is the package that comes with the game and a guitar controller, but not the standalone game or the more expensive "Full Band Kit". DLC is usually about $2 a pop, so you'll be saving about $10 with this deal. Of course, if you own the game already, this simply..."

Some games, like the prime example LittleBigPlanet, are greatly reliant on a certain thing to be successful. This is user created content, creating a whole new meaning for sharing a video game. It seems, however, that the companies are doing some rather controversial things leading to upset. Is user created content going into a dark place?

We have the industrial wonders of the world, the ancient wonders of the world... all sorts of wonders. ign.com has compiled a list of the ten wonders of the video game world. It's a monument to those who have taken games, played them, then taken them further than most gamers dream of. This list is made of people who are inspirational to other eccentric gamers, so read on!

The top seven life bars of all time is a bit of a quirky list, but a cool one! It contains such things as a pulsing heart and brain, spinal fluid and a face which gets bloodier by the second. In fact, one is even measured with a female's chest.

The Legend of Zelda Series took out first place with their class style of a series of hearts due to lasting a long time and one of the best remembered. This was followed by the loved classic Doom in second and somehow the Guitar Hero series in third.

"...Gene Simmons has a lot to say about it.

“I never do anything half way. My AXE controller is the closest thing you can have to being onstage in KISS. I created and designed the Gene Simmons AXE bass guitar and I can’t wait for the fans to experience it for themselves," said Gene Simmons. “The Gene Simmons AXE guitar is such a recognizable symbol - people have been asking for a gaming replica ever since Guitar Hero was first introduced.”"

The title says it all, Guitar Hero: World Tour has had the Super Bundle pushed back in Europe which was officially announced by Activision. It's nothing major though, just until November 26th. So five more days to wait until you can get your hands on it!

Chad Kroeger, guitarist and vocalist for Nickelback, wants to you stop playing Guitar Hero, because he feels not enough bands have "put a solid rock-and-roll package together", feeling they are one of the ones that have. As such, he advises you to stop playing the games and start playing instruments.

I could go on a very long rant here, but I'll just say this: yes, you certainly have put together such a package. It's all neat and tidy, that "rock-and-roll" band of yours. Sigh.

Australia gets to see its software sales for 16th of November! What topped the all consoles category? Surprisingly it's the game that's had a lot of criticism, Wii Music! Call of Duty: World at War then took second and third place on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 respectively.

"Why a lower score than GH3? Well, the game no longer feels fresh, even with the new instruments. And there are so many different types of music that you won't be as engaged by the setlist. Legends Of Rock was straight rock and roll that appealed to anyone with ears, but WT's variety makes getting to the songs you love a mild chore. Better than Rock Band? Ye-es, but there's little in it. WT edges it thanks to a great instrument editor, and less convoluted career mode. To really evolve, the ser..."

Attend the midnight launch for the Quantum of Solace game, get a exclusive Guitar Hero World Tour track. Not a bad idea, good promotion for the movie and for another game, however, it is a bad song.

Personally, I wasn't expecting much from this, and if I was still doing reviews probably would have brutalized this game (that is why saner, more rational editors write for me now, lol).

Reports popping up on forums regarding issues non World Tour controllers, the inability to port songs from previous Guitar Hero games (Rock Band 2 library import was a big game changer), and IMHO a mediocre track list despite the "make your own track" option, just isn't enough for me to pick this up and p...

The customization stuff is quite good, but there are a lot of nagging issues pretty much everywhere.

7.0 Graphics
The character detail is good, though the included character designs are somewhat fugly. But there are lots of texture spots that just look bad and blurry.

The soundtrack is awesome, of course, but the output of the music creator is pretty bad.

But compare, I must, and Guitar Hero: World Tour is everything that Rock Band isn’t—authentic feeling, musically diverse, and, most importantly, fun after hours of play, something Rock Band fails to accomplish with its flimsy feeling instruments and repetive track listing."

Blogger Theo Georga voices his thoughts on whether Guitar Hero is becoming the new Tony Hawk Pro Skater.

Tony Hawk started as a really popular gaming series from it's initial beginning in 1999 on the Playstation. It lost sales fast later on due to the fact that despite the games having improvements and new themes, they were releasing it at least one every year and even more leading to an influx on the market that buyers just don't take notice anymore.

Guitar Hero looks to be doing simil...

Locke Webster of UGO.com was lucky enough to attend the Guitar Hero: World Tour event that occured last week in LA. Besides getting a chance to rock out on the new instruments, he offers some insight into some of the other features fans of GH can expect... But is it enough to crush Rock Band's increasingly impressive quantity and quality of tracks?

After playing the 360 version of Konami's Rock Revolution that is supposed to compete with World Tour and Rock Band 2, UGO was not even close to being impressed. To start it all off, there are only forty songs to rock out on, while the two other music games contain more than half of that.

The drums are supposed to the main part of the game. They feature six pads and a kick. That may seem like a good thing, but the design of the drums is so bad that the drummer will have to look down to mak...

"Activision UK has announced “the biggest pre-order incentive the industry has ever seen” as it gears up for November’s anticipated release of Guitar Hero World Tour.

Gamers who pre-order the ‘super bundle’ – containing the game, drum kit, guitar and microphone – will receive a free Guitar Hero bass guitar, which currently retails for approximately £50.

“This programme signals our enormous commitment to Guitar Hero World Tour,” Activision’s marketing director for the UK and Ireland David..."

A new feature for Guitar Hero: World Tour has been revealed today, which lets users of the PC transfer MIDI tracks to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. Sadly, the 360 version will only allow drums tracks because of "hardware issues".

"If you really want to compose on your PC, obviously you're going to use the samples in-game, but if you really want to compose on PC or turn your band's MIDI...into a GH Tunes song, you can do that," said Brian Bright, the Neversoft project director.

Guitar Hero: World Tour, coming to all major consoles very soon!

IGN has recently put up a vast array of screens for the new game.

(A lot more screens in source)

"Director Brett Ratner has been plenty vocal about wanting to develop a movie based on the game Guitar Hero. But Activision, the company that owns the franchise, isn't going for it. "I'd really like to do it, but they're not letting me," he tells EW.com. "I expressed my interest, but because it's such a success, it's like now there's no reason to make a movie about it." Ratner is a big fan of the game, incorporating it into videos he's directed for Miley Cyrus and Mariah Carey, and he envision..."

"In celebration of the impending release of Guitar Hero World Tour, GameStop wants you to send them hot pictures of your mother. Dress her up in some fishnets, tease up her hair, and for god sakes show a little cleavage, and she could be well on her way to winning a $1,000 gift card for Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas and a copy of the game in their Ultimate Guitar Hero contest. There are also prizes up from grabs for Families Who Rock! (Six Flags tickets, a $500 gas card and the game) and Guita..."

"Activision just put out a press release detailing the full set list for Guitar Hero World Tour. Information has been coming out in drips and drabs about which songs made the cut so some of these might not be news to you. But here they are, all together"

Guy demonstrates the editing capabilities in the new Guitar Hero game, Guitar Hero: World Tour. For example, the guy drums a beat into the game which is recorded. He then plays it back and has a button to omit certain bits. He can even change the volume of the drumming by changing the position of the guitar. Another feature is playing it back in a different way, which he shows with the drumming played back in a gaming/techno/trance sort of sound.

The game is set to come out very soon, so w...

Tool are a band renowned for their extensive talent, spiritual messages, and dabblings in the occult. Honestly, I can't really describe the group without trivializing the music, so just listen if you are curious/have no idea what I am saying.

Anyhow, they're contributing three tracks to the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour game, those being "Parabola", "Schism" (both from the masterful 2001 album Lateralus), and "Vicarious" from 2006's 10,000 Days record. If you were expecting a little mor...

Guitar Hero World Tour has been announced for the release date of November 12th 2008 in Australia. Recent news displays the prices to expect for this new game.

"With movies like Max Payne set for release this year and Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li & Tekken next year along with talks of making a Gears of War movie and a Bioshock movie, it seems that Guitar Hero is the next game that’s been thrown into the hat to be adapted to the big silver screen.

Producer/Director Brett Ratner has apparently asked Activision if he could make a movie based on the popular hit video game Guitar Hero. He did of course name the latest installment in the Guitar Her..."

"Following on from the news that Line 6 technology had been dropped from the Wii version of Guitar Hero World Tour, a little more bad news has unfortunately emerged from Activision which affects both World Tour and EA's rival product, Rock Band 2.

Rock Band 2's instrument peripherals will not be compatible with the Wii version of Guitar Hero World Tour, and similarly Guitar Hero World Tour's instruments can not be used with the Wii version of Rock Band 2. Brian Bright, Guitar Hero World Tou..."

"Ah, the Rhythm Action genre. Bashing away on a fake, plastic instrument or leaping around like a loon on a bunch of arrows while a banging track plays in the background. Do it well and you’re a rock god on stage in front of thousands or the very ghost of Timberlake himself, throwing down some awesome shapes. For some people, this is escapism at its height. For others, well, they just don’t ‘get’ it."

Seriously? Yes, unfortunately.

Blake Peebles, only 16 years old, convinced his parents to allow him to drop out of school and focus primarily on his professional gaming career, specifically geared towards Guitar Hero.

Blake's parents have hired in house tutors to help him keep up with his studies.

He has won only $1,000 in tournament prizes so far to date, and hopes on signing on with MLG in the future.

In the latest issue of the OXM magazine, 30 new songs for Guitar Hero: World Tour have been confirmed. There are songs from the Foo Fighters, Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, and a lot more famous artists/bands!

OXM goes on to say we can expect more than 50 more songs to be revealed as Guitar Hero: World Tour gets closer to release.

A recent interview with Ozzy reveals that not only will he be appearing in Guitar Hero: World Tour along-side guitarist Zakk Wylde, but also that his hits such as Mr. Crowley, and Crazy Train will be playable songs, and Ozzfest will be a venue.

You will remember that Ironman was featured in the first Guitar Hero, so this isn't the Prince of Darkness' first interaction with the series.

"Warner Music Chief Executive Edgar Bronfman says "The amount being paid to the music industry, even though their games are entirely dependent on the content we own and control, is far too small.""

"PC gaming’s dying, hunh? Not if the rumormongers have anything to say about it. Between recent ‘confirmations’ of Final Fantasy XIII and Grand Theft Auto IV, PC gamers have started dreaming of a brighter future — and judging by a recent scan of the ESRB ratings, those dreams will soon have a soundtrack.

The ESRB has now rated Guitar Hero: World Tour for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Windows PC."

"It means, first, that classic acts can make an easy paycheck licensing their back catalogs to rhythm games, although both publishers are becoming less willing to accept anything except master tapes. With both games shipping with an in-game music store that allows players to browse, listen to tracks, and purchase new songs for the games, the ability to make money pushing classic and up-coming bands is virtually limitless.(Right now the holy grail of music licensing seems to be the Beatles, and..."

The famous guitar amplification company Peavey is now selling custom-made Guitar Hero controllers. These controllers are essentially a real guitar. Made with wood, and complete with a pickup and all the circuitry required, it is possible to play this as a real guitar. Although, those 5 brightly-colored buttons and that strum bar may get in the way.

Not only is there a good amount of pre-made custom designs to choose from, you can even make your own.

"A rumoured track-listing for Guitar Hero IV: World Tour has appeared online thanks to GoNintendo. They claim that the list which appears below for you is set to be the real thing and should be confirmed within a matter of days.

Whether or not we trust a Nintendo blog as a source, remains to be seen, but someone either has too much time on there hands or has a vast knowledge of rock music suitable for the game."

"Activision today (officially) scored a major player for Team Guitar Hero (take that Rock Band!), landing Jimi Hendrix, who will make his posthumous "video game debut" in Guitar Hero World Tour. Hendrix will feature as a playable character in the game, and two master tracks from the fire-casting rock star will ship on the game disc:

* "Purple Haze (Live)" (recorded in 1969 at the San Diego Sports Arena)
* "The Wind Cries Mary"

Additionally, Activision has announced plans to rele..."

After the E3 showing of the first two, and the announcement of the third newcomer (Rock Revolution) gamers will be frustrated as to what their next rythem game purchase should be. Should they stay loyal to their Guitar Hero or Rock Band? or perhaps try out this new guy Rock Revolution.

Either way - Popular Mechanics goes through a short video review of each with a decent write up to boot.

Two developers who work for Activision talked about wanting third party instruments to be able to work with future Guitar Hero games yesterday at their E3 2008 Press Conference, the most notable being Rock Band's. Two reps also confirmed that the 360 version of Guitar Hero: World Tour will be able to use all instruments for the first Rock Band game, as well as other games. One of the reps said that an update to the 360 version of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith will allow gamers use to third party ins...

"

We've seen a lot of Guitar Hero bots in our time, but we're pretty certain that Mechanized Rock's take on shredding automatons is something special. The system -- dubbed DeepNote -- actually watches the on-screen action with "eyes" that it uses to analyze notes, which the bot then plays in real-time. Using photodiodes aimed at the screen, the components pick up changes in light within eight nanoseconds, then convert that information to brazen, parent-shocking, full-throttle rock n' roll. ..."

Unfortunately for us all who grew up in the 70s and the 80s, as well as the few kids who actually have a decent taste in music - Led Zeppelin isn't all that keen on lisencing their songs for use in games like Rock Band or Guitar Hero. (I was pulling for Guitar Hero: Led Zeppelin too, shucks...) I guess when they said "No Stairway!" in Guitar Hero 2's loading screens, they weren't kidding.

In other news, Van Halen, Steely Dan, The Eagles, and Guns N' Roses are perfectly fine with it, and ha...

A lot of songs were revealed. You’ll be able to play Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell," The Foo Fighters' "Everlong," and Sublime's "Santeria,"
(see the source for more..) You can expect the game to be released on Xbox 360, then Playstation 3, Playstation 2, and last, but no least Wii.

Its price should be around $179 and $189.

Release date is yet to be known.

That right folks, IGN have put up their first look at Guitar hero World Tour but is it enough to take on Rock Band? New to the lineup is the Drums and the microphone for vocals. But that's not all, aswell as the new additions it looks like the guitar has gone under for a few changes which sees it have a touch pad on its neck. Expect big things.

World Tour is expected to be released later this year in a bid to rival Harmonix's Rock Band and will be released on Playstation 2, Playstation 3, ...

"The official website is now live, with general information on how it works on the DS with the little grippy thing, track samples and - best of all - watch videos of ’cool’ indie kids messing about on their DS’s, including, unrealistically, a pretty girl. As if."
