Counter-Strike

Looks aren't everything, and these games can prove it. In one of the most influential decades for gaming we've highlighted ten games from the 90s that have the ability to transcend the ravages of time. Did your favorite game make the list?

A great episode of The Bender awaits you. We have a new gal joining our cast named Elissa. She jumps right in on all the game news of the week plus anything else geek. Get us on iTunes, Get us with Zune, or Download the mp3 directly here

"This being a Sunday, today’s weekly feature will be a light-hearted addition, in the form of the widely popular Top Ten list. This week’s edition will focus on those after pub treats, online endeavours and social extravaganzas; the Top Ten Multi-Player Games."

"As goes with all creative works, there's nothing new under the sun. At least that's what they say.

Video games are no different. How many times have you played a game and asked "haven't I done this somewhere before?" And the chances are you probably have. A lot of great ideas are recycled again and again for countless reasons (mostly due to marketing, of course).

While some of these games parallel their respective host title, several actually managed to break away, finding their own suc..."

"1999. The last year of the 20th Century. It was a good one, although since it followed on the heels of one of the single best years the industry had ever seen, software-wise, it is often forgotten. However, in addition to the games that are on the final list, just a few of the top tier titles released in 1999 included Alpha Centauri, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Unreal Tournament and Soul Calibur. Indeed, as we come closer to our 2008 list, we find these lists getting harder ..."

"Plenty of people use non-expensive laptops and desktop pcs for simple school projects, music management, and web browsing. A lot of these people are also gamers, but don't buy games for their PCs because they think that their setup can't handle anything beyond Bejewled. Well they're wrong. I happen to be one of those gamers. I got my laptop last Christmas and ignorantly popped in the Orange Box and after the lengthy install, dove into Half-Life 2. It wasn't pretty. I thought my computer was g..."

Kazmierczak was allegedly addicted to Counter-strike and opened fire on 70 to 100 students at NIU... Yep, sounds completely like a Microsoft conspiracy, according to political figure Lyndon Rouche. Clearly, Microsoft is aiming to kill more young people than Adolf Hitler did in the Holocaust! That's why there are so many shooting games for Windows and XBOX owners!

The sad thing is is that this has already been disproven. When will the anti-video game activists stop grinding their axes an...

First he gets on the air with FOX News about NIU. Then his lies while on the air are debunked by Kotaku. Finally, GamePolitics decided to confront Jack about NIU.

...Well, maybe not so finally. Jack Thompson has sent GamePolitics an e-mail stating that if he doesn't get information on Kazmierczak’s gaming history, he'll file a lawsuit. Typical Thompson behavior: Make a lawsuit threat even though he's never actually won one in order to try and get his way. Nothing surprising here, re...

While Kotaku decided to analyze Wacko Jacko's lies about the NIU shooting, GamePolitics decided to take a different approach and ask one simple question to Jack Thompson: The shooter was 27, so why should violent video games have been an issue? Thompson may claim to be only against the selling of M-rated video games to underage consumers, but seriously, what do video games have to do with NIU?

I'm still trying to figure this out myself. If anyone else can figure something decent out bes...

Why oh why have video games become such a media target lately?
New York post have recently reported on the NIU shootings and guess what is to blame for the killings? Counter-Strike! Yes, a game that the killer, Stephen Kazmierczak, played four years ago is being blamed for the killings.

NYPost failed to mention that everyone in the dorm played Counter-Strike, and that most of Kazmierczak's peers considered him to be a "normal" (if not overly polite and helpful) person before the shootings.

"Seeing that Jack went out of his way to email me this morning to point out that he was "right" about the shooting being spurred by Counter-Strike, I thought it was probably worth another round of Dissecting Jack's Lies.

Hit a jump for his confusing quotes and how accurate they were:

1: "We find from brain scan studies out of Harvard that if you get started playing, for example, violent video games you can more likely copy-cat the behaviors in the games".
Verdict: False
Evidence: Whil..."

Today Fox News interviewed "campus shooting expert" Jack Thompson about the Illinois shooting, and despite the police knowing barely anything about the killer or his motives, Jack is quick to dive in and blame "murder simulators, called video games".
If you think Jack couldn't sound any more ridiculous, this video will soon change your mind. At one point he links the killer's attire to violent video games, then goes on to promote his own book. Disrespectful, much?

Surprisingly, the Fox i...

Asian students and Valve Software's Counter-Strike are thrust into the media spotlight once again thanks to new developments in Fort Bend, Texas. A Clements High School student has been suspended and placed into a correctional center when it was discovered that he created and uploaded a custom map for Counter-Strike, which was modelled after the high school. The school initially feared a possible reprisal of the Virginia Tech school shootings thanks to the involvement of a "violent" video g...
