Heavy Rain is very much a love or hate it sort of game, so it'll be interesting to hear what Yahtzee has to say this week. He's known for his love of an engrossing experience but hatred of QTEs. Let's see...
"Dating back to the full-motion CGI and pre-rendered backgrounds on the original PSX to Heavy Rain today – if it’s pretty, we can be forgiving for the lack of actual gameplay. Heavy Rain is an epic today, but will likely fade from memory soon with the exception of using it to show 360 fanboys the graphical power of the PS3."
"Until recently games have never been able to play out as if they were a real life story: there have been shallow little decisions to make at points, or none at all. Death or a little mess up could be rectified easily by pressing continue or restarting a check point. Enter Heavy Rain, Sony’s exclusive which is set to make every decision count, but will the consequences of your actions leave you satisfied?"
"This exclusive DLC was handed out with pre-orders of Heavy Rain. Being in North America, I had to wait until March 4th to get it, and I'm kinda glad it was free.
But at a suggested retail value of $4.99, I'm wondering what future DLC releases will show us. The Taxidermist is only Chronicle One--here's hoping that there's a Chronicle Two."
"Heavy Rain is Quantic Dream’s latest idea of turning an A Grade movie styled experience into an interactive, chair gripping adventure. While this is not a direct sequel to their 2005 cult classic Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain further develops, refines and reinvents the game play formula building on Fahrenheit for the better.
Due the strong story in Heavy Rain this review will be as spoiler free as possible. To put the story summary into one sentence would be: To find and stop th..."
"Quantic Dream, the studio behind creator director David Cage, put a big leap forward in game design. Their latest Interactive Drama Heavy Rain is one of the most unique experiences you'll ever have. The title received an immense amount of hype due to an impressive tech demo at 2006’s E3.Heavy Rain is a thriller based on a serial murderer named the ‘Origami Killer’. There are four playable characters which are all connected to a series of murders."
"Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain is a game made by people who clearly love the cinema. They first showed us this when Indigo Prophecy hit the Playstation 2. It wasn’t a traditional game in any way and neither is Heavy Rain. This French Developer has expanded exponentially on the ground work they themselves laid down years ago. Without a doubt it is one of the most unique games in history. I will do my best to avoid any spoilers. That said, the only question that matters is whether it is a good game..."
The long awaited PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavy Rain has finally arrived. Fans of famed French developers Quantic Dreams have waited years for this game that promises to offer a truly unique experience unlike anything that has come before it. Does this new release deliver or is it just another game that talks the talk but fails to walk the walk?

"In an attempt to keep you feeling connected with the game's characters, almost every action demands a button-prompt. Press up to open a door. Tap square to move an object. But the same mechanic that's in play to help you feel connected can also distance you from the game the most. Characters will happily sit inside a car for hours on end as the soundtrack swells dramatically and we cut from camera angle to camera angle just waiting for someone to push the thumbstick left."
Heavy Rain has been a highly anticipated PS3 game for a while now. Bringing a new dimension to gaming and a rare Adults only experience where the game has you in control of what appears to be a long thriller movie, does it fulfil all its promises? Find out after the jump.
"saddening to think that there may never be another game like Heavy Rain, though there is a possibility that it will inspire other game developers to follow the same path.
Heavy Rain is more of an experience than it is a videogame, and one which every PlayStation 3 owner should indulge in. Each player will have a unique experience, and one so significant and impactful, it will change the way we conceive modern gaming."
"If you enjoyed playing through the main game, you should definitely pick up the first chronicle. It’s very lengthy, intense, and possibly the most brutal scene in the entire Heavy Rain experience. This content is only available to those who own the collector’s edition at present, and there is no known date of price for when it is made available to the masses"
"If videogames are to attract an even wider audience, they need to evolve, making gameplay easier and more natural even as storylines become more engaging. Heavy Rain is a big, awkward lurch in the right direction.
An intense, serial-killer mystery in the style of movies like Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs, this PlayStation 3 game boldly merges hard-core production values with casual game design.
The Mature-rated Heavy Rain packs all the trimmings of a game designed for niche hobbyis..."
"Mr. Cage has penned and directed one of the most gripping and thrilling mysteries I have seen in a video game. Nearly every action that you take with the playable characters affects the outcome of the main story. When you go back and redo them, you're cheating yourself out of a one-of-a-kind experience -- just like learning the secrets of your favorite magic trick; once you know the secrets, the magic is all but gone."
"As many of it’s gaming conventions are neatly disguised, on face value Heavy Rain uses more film mechanics than it does interactive ones. Camera angles, suspense building and character development are all drawn from motion-picture, as opposed to being devised for interaction; it seems almost as if the level of interaction increases your understanding of the character’s motivations. The game subtly gives minor character details within the incredibly tight mise-en-scène – taste in music, career..."
"I was very skeptical at first, how could you really get a good feel of playing a game if all you're doing is pressing button combinations to interact with the world that you are in? But trust me it works! Heavy Rain manages to make you feel in control just as much as any other game you have played."
Michael Lafferty has delivered his review of Sony's heavily anticipated Heavy Rain and came away impressed. A graphical powerhouse, along with pushing the standards for gaming, Heavy Rain stands out in the opinion of Lafferty.
""Thank you for supporting Interactive Drama.” David Cage may not repeat his digitised Fahrenheit appearance, but his voice rings clear in the first Trophy Heavy Rain awards. Odd it should arrive at the outset, where our ‘support’ amounts to one glass of orange juice glugged and two children entertained. Perhaps Cage means to reassure us. After months of struggling to describe and defend individual moments, Quantic Dream has found a confidence in the whole. But where great movies are unified i..."
Whether it's been for good or bad publicity, Heavy Rain has been featured in the gaming news quite often, so PCN couldn't wait to get my hands on this unique title and see what it's like for themselves.
PCN thinks that it's a fantastic experience and a must-buy title for most gamers, but not completely flawless.
Gametrailers recently reviewed the upcoming Heavy Rain and they were impressed, giving it an overall score of 8.9/10 and saying that the game's story will "get it's hooks into you".
Watch the video below to find out what they liked and disliked bout the game...
"If you're planning on skipping the bulk of this text and heading straight to the review score to decide whether or not you should play through Heavy Rain, just know this: the game starts slow. It'll take you a couple hours to get into the meat of the experience and for things to really pick up, but once it does, you'll be on the edge of your seat until the end and you won't want to put the controller down. In other words, if you stick with it, Heavy Rain will give you a ride like you rarely s..."
"When the rain stops falling, you'll find a bright sun shining in Heavy Rain. Quantic Dream crafted the top game of 2010, thus far. It'll be hard to be interested in a game's story again after experiencing this gem. With connectible characters, powerful atmosphere presented via graphics and music, Heavy Rain is an experience like no other. It's a true masterpiece of gaming art."
"Basic Translation:
- Brilliant combination of a unique control scheme and high quality story.
- Only a game could reach out to audiences like this.
- Your emotions will be fully drained.
- A heavy story targeted towards adults.
- Great branching story lines and endings, smart and interesting control scheme.
- Psychologically frightening.
- Acting is great.
More translations (source):
- One play is about 10 hours. If you want to finish all the game' scenarios it's 30 hours.

"The title is awarded a coveted Gold Star, and an incredibly respectable 9/10. For those in the UK, remember that you can pre-order the HMV Exclusive Heavy Rain Collector’s Edition for £39.99.
