All Age Gaming's John Elliott brings us the 12th developer profile. This time he looks at the Hitman and Kane and Lynch series developer IO Interactive. See inside for a look into this respected developer.
"Everyone loves finding something in a game before anyone else, particularly if it’s a delicious secret and they’ve beaten everyone to the punch – that’s the cool thing about stumbling on an Easter Egg way before any other gamer has and why the internet is full of spoilers showing them all off. Just check Google or Youtube and you’ll be virtually bombarded with the exploits of people who found something before anyone else – on top of it, they won’t ever let you forget it. Ever. But, what if th..."
""A little less than three years ago, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men launched for gamers everywhere to play. On November 13, 2007, a review for the game was published that was surrounded by controversy and resulted in a series of events that include: the firing of a writer from a major site, the creation of an all-new game news site, and fan backlash against GameSpot.com, Eidos Interactive, and the Kane & Lynch franchise.""
"Microsoft closes out the month of April with three games added to Xbox Live Games on Demand. They include the family friendly Shrek the Third, Crytek first-person shooter Far Cry, and the third-person co-op shooter Kane & Lynch: Dead Men."
It was recently tweeted by screenwriter Kyle Ward that actor Jamie Foxx was cast for the role of Lynch in the upcoming film adaptation of Kane & Lynch. A script is in play, and we already have a Kane (Bruce Willis), so it looks like the film is finally going to take off with the role of Lynch given. It's certainly an interesting pick for the psychopathic sidekick, but perhaps Foxx and Willis can make this movie happen...and not face the dreaded 'video game movies suck' syndrome.
"After an initial update earlier today – promising good things for the future of the service – the full v3.2 revision is now available, adding further titles to the Games on Demand launch line-up. In addition to the likes of Resident Evil 5 and the bargain that is Viva Piñata, FallOut 3, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, Section 8 and ShadowRun are all now available also. FallOut 3 is priced at £34.99, while Section 8 is offered for £29.99."
A video game teaser trailer was recently revealed on MTV's GameOne.de website, and it surely does stand out. Shot in a surveillance camera style, the video shows a shootout at a small restaurant, with two men who appear to be the main characters of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. The sequel was announced, with Eidos discussing it since before the release of the first game in 2007, Dog Days being slated for a late 2009 release. However, with no new information revealed in the past two years, the chanc...
""The script has been incredibly well-received around town," says producer Adrian Askarieh. "After Bruce Willis read it, he called it one of the best action scripts he's ever read, and Bruce is an expert in terms of action scripts because he's read everything over the last 20 years." Bruce Willis knows something good when he sees it!
According to Askarieh, the movie will have the "basic premise" of the game, but the details will be different. "It's not going to have every sequence from the ..."
"It hasn’t been long since Square-Enix took the chomp on Eidos only weeks ago, a feat that had many gamers and fans of the British-based publisher up in arms. Yes, many jokes were passed around the place including the hilarious rumours of a turn-based Tomb Raider title, and the makeover on the anime Hitman, but instead of beating them into a corner with their huge rod of multi-platinum brilliance, Squenix are letting Eidos be who they were before the takeover, which means things should be runn..."
This topic has already been covered fairly well (see: The Problems with Game Criticism, and The Problem with Game Reviews Part 1 & 2), but until we're in a better state, it's always a positive thing, yeah?
Anyhow, Variety's Ben Fritz offers his take on the situation (as a response to Variety critic Leigh Alexander's recent blog), saying we nitpick too much and actively look for things to criticize in games instead of really valuing what needs to be valued and not letting the little stuff (...
We all know about the Kane & Lynch review controversy that surrounded Gamespot last year, but what did the game's devs think about the controversy? And how did they react to recieving so many low review scores? GamesRadar recently interviewed Jens Peter Kurup, Director of Kane & Lynch, to get his opinion on the above matters.
(Go to the source to read full interview).
It was just a rumour back in November, however it seems to have come true as Bruce Willis is currently negotiating to star in the Kane & Lynch: Dead Men movie, as none-other than Kane. With shooting to start later this year, expect to see the game released sometime in 2009.

"a. the poster was headlined "KANE & LYNCH DEAD MEN"; a quotation identified as being from Official Xbox 360 Mag stated "Grittier and nastier in tone than anything you've seen before, the violence here is visceral, brutal and very, very real." The poster showed two men and a woman. The woman was seated in the foreground; she was gagged and had a tear-stained face. Her head was being held back by one of the men who stood behind her pulling her hair; he wore surgical gloves and was speaking on ..."
For those unfamiliar with Jeff Gerstmann and why Gamespot's been taking a good bit of heat for a while from gamers, read up on the start of the controversy. After having been an editor for Gamespot for over eleven years and then being suddenly fired sparked a massive outrage within the Internet gaming community - the same community that Gamespot tries to reach out to - which led to protests.
Gamers weren't the only ones outraged, however. There were threats of mass resignations from the ...
"A demo for Io Interactive's Kane & Lynch: Dead Men (PC, PS3, X360) has arrived on Xbox Live. The 520MB demo gives a small taste of the full title's flawed mercenary/medicated psychopath action in a single player or offline co-op portion of a level--Kane & Lynch doesn't feature online co-op play."
"Speaking with a Gamespot employee yesterday who asked not to be named for this story, we've learned that, despite the neutral nature of the Gamespot news item on the matter, the editorial staff is said to be "devastated, gutted and demoralized" over the removal of former editorial director Jeff Gerstmann. While the termination of Gerstmann, a respected fixture at Gamespot, was pitched to his remaining colleagues by management as a "mutual decision", it was anything but, we're told.
The con..."
"Citing glowing feedback taken from the games official Web site, Kotaku highlights "fabricated" five-star quotes taken from respected review portals Game Informer and GameSpy. However, after a perusal of the reviews for Kane & Lynch, no such quotes are in evidence, and the official review scores offered up by Game Informer and GameSpy are not five stars but three-and-a-half stars (7/10) and three stars (6/10) while the accompanying quotes are anything but glowing."
""Losing a job you've held for over 11 years in an abrupt manner is shocking, yes."
While the above quote should perhaps win Jeff Gerstmann the 'understatement of the year' award, the former Gamespot editorial director is still staying silent about the specifics surrounding his recent firing (citing the previously mentioned "legal reasons," among others). He has, however, told Joystiq that he still stands behind his controversial review of Kane & Lynch."
While this article is not particularly in-depth, it does pose an interesting question into that of game advertisements on video game sites. These sites are paid thousands of dollars to advertise the latest system releases and when the game being advertised is not of good quality, a conflict between the advertiser and the website ensues. This is fitting after the rumoured dismissal of long-time GameSpot reviewist Jeff Gerstmann from the site because of such a conflict.
It seems that fould play is afoot at Gamespot, with one of it's longtime reviewers Jeff Gerstmann apparently getting the boot for giving the PS3 and 360 game Kane & Lynch a mediocre score of 6/10.
Apparently Eidos weren't very happy with Jeff's review and wanted something to be done about it, especially since they have been heavily advertising the game on the Gamespot site.
Actor Bruce Willis is likely to take part in the upcoming Kane & Lynch: Dead Men movie. The Die Hard actor is looking to take a lead role in this movie.
According to Times Online also Billy Bob Thornton could be taking part also in this movie. The movie will be taken under Lionsgate studios and it also seems that it is fast tracking the adaption.
