Chet Faliszek of Valve has said that the company is "about people sitting on their couches or at their desks", going on to say "it’s just not a space our engine has been looked at or optimized for."

This means we can't be expecting games such as Portal or Half Life on the 3DS (or even on the Vita) any time soon, or at all if Valve really are that disinteresed in handheld gaming.

Until September 20 all you need for some classic Portal awesomeness is a free Steam account and a computer. A mouse and keyboard wouldn't hurt. Oh and some speakers for the great audio. Yeah.

An all new short film from Dan Trachtenberg is an adaptation of the best-selling video game, Portal...and it's awesome. Better than most full-length attempts at video game movies, this short film will have you pining for more.

There are always those moments in certain video games that make you do a double take and think to yourself, "What the heck just happened?" A mark of a memorable game is when...

Portal 2 is a great sequel. Hands down this is a great game. There is no need for any other games to be released this year, gamers have their GOTY with Portal 2. Whether its the story, the puzzles, or the co-op play, fans old and new cannot go wrong with this game. Valve has once again created a classic

This video from Dorkly shows what playing the original Super Mario Bros. would be like if our plumber hero had a Portal gun. Check it out at the source -- definitely good for a laugh.

Studio giant Valve has announced the total sales for the original Portal. To date, Portal has sold over 4 million units. Will its sequel be as successful?

"On this week's MP3 David capitulates to the siren song of Minecraft, Nick goes back in Timeshift and back in Trine, and Pat explores Dungeon Hunter on PSN. Andy remains hooked on Pokemon Black, finally finishes inFamous, talks Might and Magic Clash of Heroes, and dishes the scoop on the Gears of War 3 beta. We also collectively talk about Portal in anticipation for Portal 2.

Capcom solidifies itself as a recurring news item, and trivia fails to get a correct answer this week."

"I hate to break it to everyone who had the luxury of enjoying a Christmas Break whether they’re being educated at the elementary, secondary or collegiate level, but fun time is over and both Christmas and New Year’s is nothing more than a distant dream. I know that’s hard to swallow as you read this amidst a lecture or lab that is probably only slightly less fun than watching a blade of grass attempt to grow under a snowy wasteland, but no one ever said I had to sugarcoat the truth. Never fea..."

A new weekly feature of chiptune music and the kind. Do you like chips? Do you like tunes? Well, when you add them together, you get pure awesomeness! This week's chiptunes include "Still Alive" from Portal, "Zombies on Your Lawn" from Plants vs. Zombies, and "UNATCO" from Deus Ex.

Are you a foodie? Here are seven examples of the best appearances of food in video games. But be careful - playing these games just might make you hungry.

"The beauty lies in what is communicated to us from the game, and in how we respond to its resonance. They don't need to be complicated or elegant, but they must introduce characters and ideas that stir us, tied into a story that has something grander to say."

"The following is a list of 25 exceptional single player games. It covers a diverse range of styles and genres but each title offers a worthwhile gaming experience. Each game on this list is either exclusively a solo affair or, in the few cases where a multiplayer mode is present, the single player campaign is the core experience of the game. Games with multiplayer modes are denoted with an asterisk and the list is presented in no particular order."

"Our list looks back across the last 10 years to find a surprising number of compelling characters whose origin was completely artificial. Whether a malevolent computer program or a sentient transforming robot, these characters showed that science fiction storytelling is fond of the idea of machines that can think for themselves."

Actually, I'm going to list some of it anyways. No hype, just facts: We have a panel discussion on downloadable games with Adam Boyes (Beefy Media), "Eka" (Monday Night Combat), and Robert Bäckström (Bionic Commando Rearmed 2), along with an interview with FIFA 11's creative director. We also look at the future of 3D and game coverage, the history of the medkit in video games, the Akihabara arcade scene, the latest on PlayStation Plus, and much more. And of course, all of the latest reviews a...

"Think you’ve had class with the best teacher ever? You won’t after this: College professor Michael Abbott has successfully made Portal part of the educational requirements at Indiana's Wabash College."

Wabash college in Indiana has been reported to use Valve's acclaimed PC title Portal as a means for its freshman class. Although their is no science being taught, this is to help new students learn better with the program called Enduring Questions.

"There are many games out there but not many manage to have quotes that will stick with you your whole life. Quotes are what makes games memorable. What you’ll find below is a comprehensive list that I’ve compiled with the funniest, poorly translated and most memorable quotes."

A message was recieved from Valve (under the guise of Aperture Science) that they have cancelled their Portal 2 party in E3, in exchange for a surprise. What will it be? The long awaited Episode 3 seems a good bet, but might it be Team Fortress 3? Maybe some more DLC for Left 4 Dead 2? Or just something little? Whatever it is, it'll be interesting.

"Joystick: We did a few special things on twitter
FoxyKazoo: yeah, i saw the retweet for Xbox points, i did not win
Joystick: yeah, and WrathChild attempted to win, she tried to finagle her way in, we had to tell her she couldn't do that. So I do wish to formally apologize for last week. It was a little rude of me, and in case some of you are wondering what it is that I did, the one thing that I am apologizing for, not everything am I apologizing for, but the one thing. The award-winning first-person puzzle game, Portal, is now free to download on Steam (for both the PC and the recently released Mac version) for a limited time.

"Video game fans have a lot of hobbies outside of gaming itself. But more often than not it all ends up going full circle and coming back to the wonderful world of gaming. Sometimes family and friends support our gaming habits by making stuff for game fans. Cakes are one of those hobbies and things."

All Age Gaming's John Elliott brings us the 4th developer profile. This fortnight he looks at Left 4 Dead 2 developer VALVE. See inside for a look into the famous first person shooter developer and creator of the Steam software.

"Blue Portals proposes 10 new Test Chambers for Portal. It is developed by BP Development Crew. The release date is still not settled.

It is developed for the Vanilla Version and features new challenges with new environments and new maps. The gamers will only have one option to deal with the puzzle: the blue-portal gun."

I could not help by feel a sense of overwhelming satisfaction. It was seriously hard to state. This kind of publicity can only be good. I mean, who else thinks that this song is a classic in gaming? I doubt that anyone within the choir is actually old enough, or (gaming) experienced enough to have played or even understood Portal, but either way; they should feel mighty proud of themselves in having participated. I might have jumped at a chance to join a choir just to sing that song, and I ha...

Bunch of new details on the upcoming new Portal game from Valve. Definitely bigger and more challenging than Portal 1. Be sure to keep a lookout on this game. Hit the jump to read a bunch of new info.

"Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike and Half-Life) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Portal 2 for shipment this coming holiday season.

Portal 2 is the sequel to 2007's Portal, which won 70 industry achievement awards."

It's pretty clear at this point: Steam is coming to Mac OS X. Valve sent out a number of suggestive images to large Mac and gaming sites today, that show a variety of Valve game properties done in unmistakable "Apple style"

Valve have recently updated portal with a new achievement called 'transmission received', originally confused about how to get it, gamers soon found out that radios were to be taken to special spots in each level to hear a transmission that had to decoded externally by special programs or morse code and HEX, these sound files were found to contain image data and phones numbers when examined on PC, could this be the start of an ARG and more info on EP3 or Portal 2? More on this in the source.

""Every year, there is a day that reminds us all of the people we cherish, love, in some cases tolerate and hopefully can call our Player 2. This week ends with Valentine's Day and for those of us who have someone to share the day with, it's a very special day to reaffirm the small commitments. For everyone else though, it's Sunday. In the meantime, there is always going to be at least one character in a game that the average gamer is going to garner a small crush on. Sure, they're digital, bu..."

"There has been a heated argument over whether or not video games can be considered an art form. One side's augment is that something interactive, that is subjective to the user's choice cannot be art. I wholeheartedly disagree. It is an art because we can choose, because we can make games something different, unique to the player. Art is not a single definition, it doesn't have boundaries. When you confine something like art, to take it away from everyday life; it starts it to lose its meanin..."

""This is the first in hopefully a series of articles, where each time we take a look at all the games in a particular series and talk about what the developer, the community & our own opinion is on whether its story and events in them are considered canonical within the series.

This time we tackle the Half-Life series.""

"The PC and the 360 are just more straightforward. We can focus on what we want to do, which is make game experiences, instead of sweating bullets over obscure architectural decisions they make with their platform. [...] I didn’t come into this business in the 90s because of some technical fetish. I came in because I wanted to give people experiences that made them have fun."

This is a must download of The Bender this week. We preview EVERYTHING that will happen and E3 (and even things that might not happen). Because we know how you feel, we've scraped up the loneliest games to help you sulk away the year's loneliest weekend without playing with your joystick too much. May these titles further freeze the icy blankets on your Twin-size bed."

We certainly got excited when an article was submitted concerning a Master Sword becoming a reality. Thanks to Sub-Zero of unrealitymag.com, you can check out eleven others as well in his gallery! (Including a Master Sword as a twelfth)

"A portal gun my boyfriend made for my Aperture Science Test Subject costume.

It lights up both blue and orange along the tube, in the barrel, and in the "indicator light" on top. The light switch is a two-way toggle in the back by the handle. It's 22" long including the prongs and weighs about 15 lbs.

"You know, the problem with top ten lists is that you only have a selection of ten to choose from. Sure, I could make my lists into top 20 lists, but it's just not as cool as ten. It’s either go top ten, or go top 100, and I just don’t think I can name that many games on my own to make a list of that stature. So here are my top ten favorite video game villains of all time. Some of them may seem like cheeky afterthoughts to you, but hear them out. I think you’ll agree that I have a valid point ..."

"It seems that entirely too often, people wonder what it would be like to see their favorite video games in real life. This results in a nearly infinite number of fan-made videos of varying levels of quality. I’ve done my best to find 12 great ones that span Mario Bros. to Portal. It’s abudantly clear that I’ve probably missed a large number, so feel free to leave your favorites in the comments. Ready…start!

People are demanding longer games in the belief that it will make for a better storyline, therefore a better game overall in terms of gameplay and value.

Korey of youarelose.blogspot.com says that shorter games are better because you'll remember more. The rule is that the longer something takes, the less you're likely to remember by the end of it. He uses examples such as Portal Shadow of the Colossus as good games that are short in length, but still present a good storyline. This is in co...

"I’ve been scouring the Internet for months in search of a recipe for video game foods. It hasn’t been easy. The bakers and cake decorators who know how to create really amazing desserts don’t seem to want to share their cooking secrets, leaving me with recipes for companion cube cakes that look rather disgusting. So, inspired by my friends at Nerds Gone Wild! Magazine, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I decided to bake Triforce shortbread cookies."

"Portal: Still Alive will be released on XboxLIVE! Arcade this Wednesday, and is effectively a re-release of the original title. The title hopes to catch the attention of those who neglected to pick-up The Orange Box last year, while still attempting to please the fans with fourteen new Challenge Maps; some of which have been created by Valve’s online community. In addition, there are also six new advanced Test Chamber Maps included.

Mod Database takes a first look at the new Portal mod - Portal Prelude, which is set to release tomorrow (Oct. 10th)

Complete with videos, MODDB offers a very in-depth preview.

Since the-minus world's re-made Atari 2600 box art was so cool, one of their designs got the cover of the "All the Rage" magazine, "an entertaining, poorly-designed, non-trendy response to lifestyle magazines", according to their official website.

Along with that, they also were interviewed, revealing how the crazy gaming website came about. You can check out the interview on page 9.

A Portal mod that was basically kept in the dark for months is finally coming to the surface. Said to release sometime towards the end of September, Portal: Prelude promises to tell the back story of Apature Science - and showcase the events leading up to the rise of GlaDOS.

Portal: Prelude will feature "8 chapters, 19 test chambers, 48 challenges, 6 advanced maps" plus a brand new plot complete with dialogue.

Best of all - it will be free.

Just when you thought you had seen every version of Portal's infamous "Still Alive", here's a new one from Trickster of vimeo.com.
It's the ending song to Portal ... typographied!

(if you cannot see the video, check it out at the source)

In the past, box art was clean and simple, such as the Atari 2600's. Nowadays, we have these amazing designs for box covers, but what if the games we play today had the same covers of the Atari 2600? the-minusworld has created some, such as Halo 3 and No More Heroes.

There's more in the source for you to check out as well.

Over at the Game Developers Conference in Austin, Tom Abernathy, who writes for Microsoft Game Studios, explained how a character's wants and needs lead to better gameplay.

He used examples from the games Portal and BioShock, pointing out that they both wanted and needed something, which also led to drama.

Mirror's Edge demo

Forgoing parkour in favor of teleportation, an inspired modder by the nom de éditeur of EvilWeevil has created a 1:1 replica of the Mirror's Edge demo level from E3 (or, if you'd rather, the initial gameplay footage of DICE's first-person platformer) using Valve's smash action-puzzler, Portal.
As you can see in the video, there's no fancy climbing, leaping, balancing, or zipline action – this mod is all about using the portal gun to reach t..."

"If you like speedruns, it doesn't get much speedier than this - Portal's chamber 14 done in 4 seconds.

I'm baffled as to what even happens in this video."

Portal: Still Alive debuted at E3 with a Glados narrated trailer at the 360 conference, however according to a PR manager a Portal title will also appear on PSN shortly after Still Alive's release in the Marketplace.

This is still a rumor however and still requires official confirmation

Fans of Portal may be disappointed with it's upcoming sequel Portal: Still Alive.
According to Valve's Doug Lombardi, the series's plot will not be extended or delved into. And despite GLaDOS promoting the game at E3, she won't be making an appearance in Still Alive. (An odd choice, considering the title of the game, no?)

Though judging by Lombardi's cryptic response, it seems we will see more of GLaDOS (and more plot) in a future title.

"Microsoft community manager Chris Paladino does a video walk through of Microsoft's E3 line-up. Games mentioned in the clip include: Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Guitar Hero World Tour, Rockband 2, Lips, Uno Rush, Galaga Legions and Portal: Still Alive. Wait, wait, wait. Portal: Still Alive? The game is hitting Xbox LIVE Arcade in 2008. It will feature single player and "a new challenge mode." Last April, Valve's Doug Lombardi stated, "You won't see a new Portal at retail this Christmas because o..."

Portal 2 is well under way, and a lot of people are asking "how the hell can Valve construct a successful sequel to such a great game?".
Well the answer may be "they aren't" because according to this casting call for a voice actor, the next Portal game might be a prequel where you will play as none other than Cave Johnson, the founder and CEO of Aperture Science, who apparently starts to lose his grip on humanity as the story progresses.

"Details given to us last night about Valve's rumored casting of the sequel (or prequel) to its Orange Box hit Portal hinted at a big role for Aperture Science's founder Cave Johnson. The potentially spoiler-iffic painted portrait and brief bio of the possible Portal 2 antagonist led us to believe that the sequel may take place prior to the original. Maybe not, based on some rumored dialogue that a source passed on.

Warning: It's all spoiler territory from here on...

A programmer by the name of T4ils has released their own 2D remake of Valve's Portal, so anyone in the homebrew scene can play it on their DS. Titled Still Alive DS, it's minimalistic, sure, but it's Portal! As a bonus, a map editor is included, opening up the game quite a bit more. Check out the video:

""We sort of laugh at it," [marketing man Doug Lombardi] told Shack News.

"Because we've been wildly successful--we're very fortunate, you know. Our games have all done really, really well, Steam has taken off and become this whole other business for us, Valve has never been in better shape--and yet everybody is talking about how in the PC world, the sky is falling.""

""We'd love to do that. Right now it's something we'd love to do. I'd love to sell Portal on Xbox live," said Doug Lombardi, marketing director at Valve. "[But] the platform holders aren't doing that right now. There's a size limit and all kinds of other things."

Portal is one of breakthrough titles that came in 2007, combined in The Orange Box with other epic games like Half Life 2. Though people would look forward to a "Portal 2", Valve says they're going to take their time to bring out a quality game just like the first one instead of rushing through saying "Okay, that was revolutionary, so its successor has to be equally as revolutionary".

It's time for another random Portal article. 2 days ago we had an in-depth look at Portal and now Kotaku has something new from SakuraCon 2008... A cosplayer who dressed up as a humanoid GLaDOS (cake and all) and spent the whole day speaking in GLaDOS's monotone robotic voice. She's either really dedicated or completely crazy!

So, it's a pretty slow release week this week, especially considering that three of the more notable releases this week are really just The Orange Box being split up into parts. But this week also sees the release of the dark RPG for the Wii and PS2, Baroque, and the PC Director's Cut of Assassin's Creed. Assassin's Creed: DC probably still has all the repetition of the original version, though.

The first batch of Companion Cube Plushies sold out within the same day they were released and could be found on eBay for $50-100+

Well, with such a high demand Valve has restocked the plush cube of love for only $29.95 USD. However, if you do not live in the US expect to pay double for your cube as shipping is pretty pricey. If you missed them the first time you have a second chance to get one but only while supplies last. I just placed an order for mines; what about you?

Deviant art member billybob884 has created a papercraft version of the turret from one of 2007's favorite games, Portal. The image included in this post is the final assembled version. The source leads to a PDF download where you can print out and assemble your own turret.

For those of you who don't know what papercraft is, it's similar to origami except you cut oout the forms and tape/glue it together.

"As part of the Love is in the Air event in World of Warcraft, Weighted Companion Cubes from Portal (if you didn’t already know that I will incinerate you) have been seen in such locations as Stormwind and Undercity."

"Valve has said it will definitely be making more Portal, confirming plans to add significantly more than just "a bunch of new puzzles".

Speaking to Eurogamer, spokesperson Doug Lombardi said it was less a matter of if and more a matter of what and when.

"There'll be more Portal, for sure. But the details of that, to be honest, we're still working out," he said."

What's this? More random Portal videos? It looks like fans can't get enough of that kooky puzzle game, so GameSetWatch has compiled a list of their ten favorite covers of the Portal theme song, Still Alive.

Keep your eyes out for the acoustic version, played by Jonathan Coulton - the composer of the song itself.

If a turret bitches about its job and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound? You bet it does. "A Day in the Life of a Turret" catches two turrets on the job during a typical day at the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, and the monotony that lies within."

Best games. These really depend on people's tastes. So, different sites have different lists. Here's what QuickJump (qj.net) has as the top games of 2007. Its an all around list that includes all current-gen platforms.
Whether they are awarding games on the high powered PS3, or the innovative and fast-selling DS, they have always looked at gameplay rather than graphics. Calling all Cars is a good example of this, winning an award for it's fun gameplay!

Kotaku.com recently held a "Reader's Choice Awards" in which regulars of the site could vote for their favorite game of 2007 from each console.

And while not everyone was happy with how the awards were conducted, the results were still tallied and winners were still announced.

While going out on Saturday night I noticed a bright blue ring, glowing. First thing that came to my mind "omg, it's a portal". It was a sign / logo for a mini-mall but all it was, was a blue neon oval. Unfortunately because we were driving I couldn't get too many photos and they aren't the greatest quality either; Photos were taken with my iphone at night time + moving vehicle = not too great.
