With Halloween over, it's time to announce the winner of the thirteenth round of Articles of Excellence. Bagging another win, Dark Moor's review of Resonance of Fate is one of high praise, scoring it a 4.5/5. They describe it as a game that may lack a little in the graphics department, but makes up for that trifle by providing a gameplay that deviates from the typical RPG style in an enjoyable fashion.

"Japanese development company Tri-Ace haven’t really hit their stride yet with this generation of consoles.

The fourth installment in the Star Ocean series, released early in 2009, was an ambitious sci-fi odyssey that failed to live up to the lofty expectations gamers held for the franchise, while their new IP a year before that – Infinite Undiscovery – was about as vague and bland as its title suggested.

So it’s with well-guarded high hopes that JRPG fans have approached Resonance Of Fa..."

SEGA bring us a new Steam Punk inspired Japanese RPG. Almost the exact opposite of Final Fantasy XIII, this is a hard as nails, old school experience not for the fint hearted.

All Age Gaming's Ian Crane takes a look at another JRPG that has been thrown into the mix, Resonance of Fate. Originally named End of Eternity, does this JRPG hold any hope of competing against the likes of Final Fantasy 13? Read on to find out.

"There is a lot of content in Resonance of Fate. It can take more than 60 hours to play through the entire adventure, and if you do every side quest along the way, you can push that number much higher. But it doesn't matter how long a game is if you aren't consistently engaged along the way. Thankfully, the exciting combat and quirky story make this game incredibly difficult to put down once you get sucked in, and there is always a new challenge waiting for you around the corner. Resonance of ..."

"Resonance of Fate is unconcerned with flashy graphics and simple systems and it's certainly not big on putting a grand story across in hours of uninterrupted cut-scenes. Instead, developer Tri-Ace has focused primarily on its battle system and its world and on these grounds, if on no other, Resonance of Fate beats Final Fantasy XIII hands down. Hungry for a new JRPG? Provided you're not scared off by complexity, this is the one to go for."

"It's not too often that you get something original out of the Japanese role-playing genre. Tradition long ago turned into cliche and still it soldiers on, bolstered by a group of hardcore enthusiasts that are always willing to tackle the next 40 hour epic. If you've lost interest in the genre over the years -- or are just in the mood for something new -- Resonance of Fate may be just what you're looking for."

Dutch site 9Lives have reviewed Resonance of Fate, giving it an overall score of 81% and saying that the game "breathes new life into the stagnating JRPG genre" and is "a must for JRPG fans who are not afraid to dirty their hands."

"Resonance of Fate will prove to be the sensible choice. Its clumsily paced cutscenes still manage to flesh out more likeable, funnier characters than Final Fantasy XIII does, even with its Hollywood production values, and there's definitely a whole lot more to keep JRPG old-timers enthralled.

Surrender to Resonance of Fate and it's unlikely you'll wish for all those precious weeks back."

Gametrailers have released a rather in-depth review of the recently-released JRPG Resonance of Fate, and they were impressed, giving it an overall score of 8/10 and saying that "if you're looking for an RPG that breaks the norm, Resonance of Fate deserves a look."

"This is a hugely interesting game, as fascinating as it is frequently frustrating, as engaging as it is eccentric and, for those who are hooked by its quirky charms, it will provide one of the most inspired approaches to the JRPG seen in a decade."

"End of Eternity (to be called Resonance of Fate when it arrives in North America next month) is an unassuming-looking game. It might be tempting to overlook it in light of the upcoming barrage of RPGs, and some pieces of the game are overlookable, but passing End of Eternity by means missing out on a fantastically fun battle system and surprisingly good overall package."

"RoF could prove to be a pretty entertaining title. The magazine gave it a pretty impressive 34 points out of a total of 40, a better mark than the game's direct competition for the week, the Ar Tonelico 3 RPG, which only managed to get 28 points.

"Every battle requires you to consider how far you are from the enemy and how to link combos with party members, making it very strategic throughout," one of the editors wrote. "It's a difficult system and it won't appeal to everyone, but I think..."
