Silent Hill fans may have noticed that Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, the "re-imagining" of Silent Hill 1, looks very different than previous games in the series. "Arguably, the most memorable part of the Silent Hill series isn’t its fog and fire sirens, its gritty Otherworld or vicious monsters, but rather something on a level entirely its own: Pyramid Head. Known in some installments as the Bogeyman or the Red Pyramid Thing, the unforgettable villain says nothing; drags a giant, heavy knife; and walks around with a massive, blood-stained metal cone on his head. It almost sounds silly by rough description, but the true figure makes a very different imp..."

Konami thought that they could spice up the Silent Hill series by handing the fifth installment over to a new team of developers. What we ended up with was Silent Hill: Homecoming, arguably one of the worst games in the series.
And yet it had all the elements of a Silent Hill game. It had all the elements of a good horror game. So what went wrong?

It's a topic that has come up on various gaming sites recently... Many so-called "survival-horror" titles of this generation (such as Dead Space and Resident Evil 5) are taking more action-oriented routes to attract a larger audience, thus losing the "survival" aspect that many older horror games were known for.

But is survival horror slowly disappearing? Or is it simply evolving and adaptaing to suit a more mainstream audience? And if that's the case, is this change for the better?

For those who haven't booted up Silent Hill Homecoming on their PC in awhile, Konami announces a minor patch is out for the game today which will be automatically applied if you install the game or have it installed and registered (and assuming you're online).

The patch fixes an issue related to the changing of graphic resolutions.

"The creaking darkness and limited scope each of the protagonists’ individual actions will be familiar to Survival Horror fans, yet the infuriating control mechanics that have raised much argument over the genre’s current headline act’s own Current-Generation arrival, Resident Evil 5, are entirely absent here. Movement and combat is infinitely more fluid than earlier entries in the series; simply holding the L2 Trigger will lock-on to an opponent, while pressing the Cross Button in initiate at..."

"The gaming community has a morbid fascination with death, and something is always dying. Apparently E3 is dead, PC gaming is dead, and some say the survival horror genre is dying. Most gamers readily admit that Resident Evil 4 is a great game, but no one is trying to defend it as a survival horror title. Indeed, the Resident Evil franchise has changed over the years, and we're a long way from where Capcom started."

"Silent Hill: Homecoming is the highly anticipated first instalment in the hugely popular Silent Hill series to arrive on the Current-Generation. Developed by Double Helix, the game was originally titled Silent Hill 5 - the late change to a subtitle rather than a true numerical addition to the series raising a question of Konami’s faith in the US studio’s adaptation of the series, but with the UK release only one month away; those questions will very soon be answered."

"We get it. It’s hard enough for a company - dev or publisher - to turn a profit with each game release. Given the choice, would you risk losing tens of millions to completely reinvent your money-maker, or play it safe with a slight upgrade you designate a sequel? Hell, it took Capcom five tries to reinvent Resident Evil 4 and Ubisoft has no clue what to do with Splinter Cell: Conviction.

We’ve got some tips for these companies. We’ve come up with some ideas to reinvent franchises before th..."

It's no secret that Silent Hill: Homecoming has recieved quite a bit of flak from fans of the series. But what do the makers think of this? Silent Hill: Homecoming has been out for a while in America and Europe will be getting it in a few months, but it is worth the buy?
Reviews have been divided, with some hating the game for deviating so far from the previous games, while others claim it is an improvement for the series.

If you still haven't decided if Homecoming is worth shelling out the money for, here is Gametrailers' review, detailing the games plot, presentation, gameplay and design ...

"So which one takes your vote for being more fear-inducing? Which one puts the money where the scares are? Which game, do you think, is more likely to send your next pair of pants to the hamper, and not because they’re dirty?"

Survival-Horror, you either love it or hate it. Whether Nemesis is chasing you down Resident Evil 3's cramped hallways, or Pyramid Head is cornering you in Silent Hill 2's dark rooms, or Sae is stalking you relentlessly in Fatal Frame 2, it's a genre that is bound to get your adrenaline rushing and your heart pumping, so much so that you might find yourself feeling dread and wanting to turn the console off. But that's why we play them, after all. We want to be scared.

This topic has already been covered fairly well (see: The Problems with Game Criticism, and The Problem with Game Reviews Part 1 & 2), but until we're in a better state, it's always a positive thing, yeah?

Anyhow, Variety's Ben Fritz offers his take on the situation (as a response to Variety critic Leigh Alexander's recent blog), saying we nitpick too much and actively look for things to criticize in games instead of really valuing what needs to be valued and not letting the little stuff (...

"In case you haven’t been paying attention, I really enjoyed Silent Hill: Homecoming. It isn’t that the game is anything new or different; more that it’s simply a superlative example of what survival horror should be. This time, we don’t even have Konami’s internal Team Silent to thank. Homecoming was passed along to a Western developer from moment one, a conglomeration of Shiny and The Collective which formed under the new moniker Double Helix Games.

No doubt many survival-horror fans have already downloaded SIREN: Blood Curse from PSN and are planning on picking up Silent Hill: Homecoming, but if you only have money for one then which will be the best option in terms of scares? Which will satisfy you most as a survival-horror fan?

Multiplayerblog takes a look at both games, and which best delivers the scares.

"When we spoke to Atari about its reaction to the ban and plans for the game, the representative mentioned that they hoped to get Konami to tone down the high impact violence scenes so that it could be reclassified as MA15+ and allow the game to be released in Q1 2009. We'll let you know as soon as Atari is able to confirm these plans."

"Ever since my first encounter with Silent Hill 2, something about this survival-horror franchise really got to me. Not that running from zombies wasn't terrifying when I played the original Resident Evil -- it's just that Silent Hill's themes of sin, punishment, and forgiveness (not to mention the nightmarish abominations) drew me in on a deeper level. While I'll always associate earlier series games with clunky combat, hard-to-follow stories, crappy camera positions, and load times between e..."

Today IGN reviewed Silent Hill: Homecoming and they were not impressed, giving it an overall score of 6.7/10!

Their main complaints were that the game felt more like an action game than a horror, that some graphic models and textures looked odd, and that the plot itself "came across more like a subplot than a full extension of the Silent Hill franchise". That's right folks. Another week, another round of new video games being released. Kotaku's put up a list of games we can expect to find on Super Tuesday this week. Fan opinions are split down the middle regarding Silent Hill: Homecoming, with many believing that the new American dev team won't be able to recreate the brilliance of previous games, while others remain optimistic that they will recreate the series into something even better.

But even if Homecoming does end up sucking, at least it will have awesome music!

We all know Silent Hill's iconic enemy has never had an 'official' name, though he is popularly known as "Pyramid Head" or "Red Pyramid Thing" by the fans and game-makers alike.

This is yet another game to face the OLFC that has failed to pass due to their antiquated rating laws, where their highest rating for games is just MA15+, making many adult themed games, (no, not sexually based games) unable to gain classification.

When you think Silent Hill, you think thick fog, disturbing monsters, an evil town and gory "otherworld", and a poor average-joe caught up in it all.

It appears as though the official Silent Hill: Homecoming box-art has snuck onto game sites with little notice and it's decent enough, if not a little "horror movie" cliche, but it doesn't seem to capture the point of Silent Hill.
