Sonic was once a gaming icon who has since fallen into infamy with a string of poorly designed games. While he's trying to make a comeback, like most ailing stars...he turns to insurance commercials.
If anyone remembers the Mega Man fan film a few years back, then you'll be excited for this. Director Eddie Lebron returns to work on his latest project that involves our beloved blue hero, Sonic!
"Welcome to a celebration of things in gaming over the years that make you go 'GRR.' In other words, these certain parts, elements or trends in gaming have already or are at some point going to annoy you greatly when you're playing a gaming title, so much so you'll probably end up doing the inevitable controller-smash-against-wall technique which will probably make you very sad when your controller lies in two bits at your feet. Resist the temptation for controller flingage and instead bask in..."
To celebrate Sonic's 20th birthday, Sega has kindly announced a sale for certain Sonic-related games on the PSN and XBL. PSN users will receive a Sonic bundle, while XBL users will get 40-50% off individual titles.
"The blue blur, AKA Sonic the Hedgehog, has been around for nearly twenty years now. He's had his highs, he's had his lows, but one thing cannot be denied - Sonic is one of the most recognizable and beloved gaming characters on the planet. SEGA knows this, and in celebration of Sonic's 20 years in the spotlight they've announced the new 'Sonic Boom' event for E3 this year."
Want to indulge in some classic Sonic the Hedgehod melodies without dusting off the good ol’ Sega Genesis? Now you can with the free, 13-track album called “The Sound of Speed,” which covers Sonic’s greatest adventures on the Sega Genesis platform.
SEGA has announced its effort to help Japan during its tsunami crisis. For all of next week, all sales of Sonic games and Football Manager 2011 for the iOS platforms will be donated to help the Red Cross disaster relief efforts. Do your part everyone!
"The game features custom keyboard support (meaning you can map your buttons at will) as well as including handy features such as multiplayer for certain games and - perhaps most importantly - the option to save your game anywhere you want and resume where you left off. If you know how hard some of these games were back in the day, that's got to be welcome information."
"Yuji Naka, the man behind Sonic the Hedgehog, confessed that he misses the days that he was involved with hardware design. Naka was heavily involved in the creation of the Dreamcast and other Sega controllers."
"While there’s no denying the charm of an 8-bit Queen DJ Hero mash-up, some developers have gone against the grain and revived some hits from the 80s and 90s to today’s standards. Not only are these fan-made creations (mostly) good, some even rival what the bigwigs are pumping out."
Fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons on Saturday should be cautiously optimistic about recent news that a movie starring the blue hedgehog could be inching closer to reality. Rejected by SEGA of Japan, the fan-made film will feature landscapes reminiscent of the 16-bit era in videogames.
For a measly $24.99, Sonic fans can finally race their favorite blue hedgehog with new R/C cars. It's the same company who made the Mario Kart R/C popular.
"In 1993, most gamers were busy making sweet love to their Super Nintendos and Sega Genesises. The two systems dominated the 1990s. Many companies attempted to challenge the two juggernauts with their own consoles. None, however, were as gungho as Pioneer’s LaserActive."
20 SEGA games. 14 arcade games. 16 interactive sports games. All on the same console... the Zone Sega Wireless Gaming Console. Play officially licensed SEGA games and do your best impression of playing on the Wii with this "Wii Clone." Not surprisingly, even the console and controllers look like true knock-offs.
SEGA fanboys and fangirls, get ready for February! The iPhone app store will soon be carrying the SEGA Genesis Ultimate Collection for your nostalgic and finger cramping pleasure.
"SEGA Europe has been running a promotion in cooperation with Nintendo this festive season, and here at Electronic Theatre we thought we’d take this time to draw your attention to the fantastic selection of titles available at a reduced price, before it’s too late. Right now on the Virtual Console service for Wii, ten SEGA Mega-Drive releases are available with a 40% price reduction."
Why should you care about this randomness out of nowhere? Well, because Universal Pictures was about to pick it up. That's how good it is.
The movie is a throwback to the old "SatAM" Sonic cartoon featuring a different and better cast of characters alongside Sonic. A proper trailer is to be shown in Summer.
After having some pretty good releases last month in both quality and quantity, Japan's VC fare for August seems a bit dialed back. There are some definite gems, but there's nothing really groundbreaking. Also included is Japan's update for next Tuesday, the last update of July.
Next week's releases (July 29, 2008):

"An official report into the Virginia Tech shootings of April this year has found that perpetrator Seung Hui Cho held little interest in videogames, and no interest whatsoever in violent titles.
Indeed, the only game that Cho is reported to have played is Sonic the Hedgehog; his college roommates even admitted to finding it strange that Cho wasnt more attracted to games, as many of his fellow students played them."
Seung Hui Cho, the rampage shooter of the violent Virigna Tech attack has been proven to not play violent video games. Instead, he played games like Sonic the Hedgehog. None were related to war or extremely violent in anyway confirms his former roommate. In fact, he never saw him play a video game, period. All he saw him do was study, sleep, download music and watch movies that he rented from the library.
"Often developers are only too pleased to dish out more of the same (particular given the rocketing costs of software production), but whether it's an eagerness to please or just pure laziness GamerSquad leans towards the latter some of the most anticipated videogame sequels simply end up falling way short of expectation."
"Last months news that SEGA and Baldur's Gate/Neverwinter Nights/Jade Empire developer BioWare were joining forces to create a Sonic the Hedgehog RPG for the Nintendo DS came straight out of Bizarro World. Now, BioWare chief Ray Muzyka has shed a little more light on a project that has taken everybody by surprise.
As well as promising that some of the worlds best writing and designing talent was working on Sonic, Muzyka also discussed how the studio intends to translate what is traditiona..."
"During Microsoft's E3 conference tonight, they announced a slew of new Xbox Live Arcade games, provided glimpses at titles we've already known about and confirmed the release of two classic Sega games, Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Axe, are already available on the XBL Arcade service starting tonight.
