System Shock 2

System Shock 2

All Age Gaming's John Elliott brings us the 9th developer profile. This fortnight he looks at the System Shock 2 and Bioshock series developer Irrational Games. See inside for a look into the FPS developer.

Bioshock 2 has been praised but remains in the shadow of Bioshock. Many gamers didn't find it as fresh as the original. Regardless of how you rate the game, it is the "shock" franchise that set a standard for involved, cerebral FPS play when first-person shooters were mindless frag-fests.

"A look back at some of the scariest games ever made. I find classics are usually more well thought out than the new scary games. The only thing I can really say better about the new releases are better graphics but otherwise, classics have always been able to give me the chills. Below is a list of the 10 scariest game that I’ve played.

See source for full list."

"1999. The last year of the 20th Century. It was a good one, although since it followed on the heels of one of the single best years the industry had ever seen, software-wise, it is often forgotten. However, in addition to the games that are on the final list, just a few of the top tier titles released in 1999 included Alpha Centauri, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Unreal Tournament and Soul Calibur. Indeed, as we come closer to our 2008 list, we find these lists getting harder ..."

2K Boston's Ken Levine says he "loves" the world of System Shock (the series contains the spiritual predecessors to BioShock), and would be keen on a third game in the EA-owned series if the opportunity ever came up. Levine is currently tied to Take-Two.

This is especially interesting news as a third game in the series was in pre-production status for awhile until EA decided it "didn't give a sh**" about the game (according to Levine).

"Plenty of people use non-expensive laptops and desktop pcs for simple school projects, music management, and web browsing. A lot of these people are also gamers, but don't buy games for their PCs because they think that their setup can't handle anything beyond Bejewled. Well they're wrong. I happen to be one of those gamers. I got my laptop last Christmas and ignorantly popped in the Orange Box and after the lengthy install, dove into Half-Life 2. It wasn't pretty. I thought my computer was g..."

This week. we covered a gamut of topics. We first talked a bit about our Wii Giveaway. Then we got into the banhammer that was dropped on Halo 3 Epsilon players and the 24 hour ban dropped on Call of Duty 4 beta fans. We talked about the free games that just came out from Ubisoft and EA, which we hope is a trend in the right direction for older games. We also hit on the Bioshock multiplayer issue and digital distribution being the savior of PC Gaming.

Bioshock currently does not have a multiplayer component. This was done by design by the Irrational Games crew. They have mentioned on several occasions why they focused on single player. Ken Levine has mentioned that the focus would make for a better single player experience because they would not be distracted by a multiplayer component. Several times in the past, Irrational has added multiplayer to games like Freedom Force and System Shock 2 with poor results.

Singleplayer is awesome, sure multiplayer can be good but its that story driven action packed campaign that we hunger for. Here is a list of the top 10 FPS singleplayer games. While all these titles are available for PC many of them are or will be on consoles. System Shock 2, Doom and Deus Ex all make a appearance but which one will be top dog?

The list is as follows (in reverse order, even though the numbers are incremental):

  1. F.E.A.R
  2. Call of Duty 2
  3. System Shock 2
  4. Aliens vs Predator 2
  5. Far Cry
  6. Ca...
