A little over a year ago I wrote an article about why I think fighting games lack innovation and skill. This seems even more true now than it did before.
Gamers have entered another golden age of fighting games much like the early 90s. With the recent releases of Mortal Kombat, SF IV, and Marvel vs Capcom 3 fighting games are on the upward swing. Developers and publishers need to take notice, this is the perfect time to release another Power Stone game, Darkstalkers 4, or the perfection cross over game featuring characters from Dead or Alive
"Recently Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono explained to gamers why we have yet to see a crossover event between the popular fighting game series Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Both of these franchises have been around for a long time and dominate the same part of the video game market. With recent additions to both of the gaming series that were well-received (Street Fighter 4 and Mortal Kombat 9) it seems like the right time to bring the two together. But why haven’t we seen these two..."
Fighters are one of the more popular genres of video games today. But one has to wonder why? They don't take skill and simply aren't that much fun to play.
All Age Gaming's John Elliott brings us the 10th developer profile. This time he looks at the Street Fighter and Resident Evil series developer Capcom. See inside for a look into this renowned developer.
"Last year, (2009) was referred to by many as the year of the fighting game. The ridiculously anticipated Street Fighter 4 blew gamers away and more or less revived the genre. Marvel vs Capcom 2 returned to modern consoles, a move applauded by both new and hardcore fans. Tekken [6] landed on a non-Sony console for the first time ever, earning mostly positive feedback and reviews. Not to mention Guilty Gear developer Arc System Works made the beautiful BlazBlue. Overall it was a fantastic year ..."
"When it comes to fighting games, Capcom is still considered the king among many gamers. The solid gameplay offered in Capcom franchises keep hardcore virtual combatants coming back for more. But there is one thing that draws us in besides the physics engines and collision detection. It's the female fighters. That's why we've compiled a list of the sexiest female characters from Capcom fighters. Sure the pickings were slim when women first entered the Capcom fighting scene back in Street Fight..."
With the BAFTA Awards coming up late this week (March 19), AAG's Ian Crane looks at the nominees and does some predictions of his own as to which game will win what category at the famous awards later this week.
"The reason I find myself asking this question is because me and my friends were discussing about games we played in our childhood, with the typical titles like Sonic, Mario, Zelda, Streets of Rage, and Street Fighter making the grade. Bringing up the notion that they don’t make games like they used to, but this brought up the thought of times change, and games moved on with the times. By this statement I do not mean in regards to technology, but in the sense of consumers needs. As, in my chil..."
"It’s Boxing Day- and, as tradition dictates, it’s the day you’ll be receiving not only the obligatory two turtle doves but also, luckily for you, the second instalment of Electronic Theatre’s 2009 Twelve Games of Christmas. This feature series aims to highlight some of the industry’s top achievers from each month of 2009, with this second instalment tackling February, and to bring you the top-picks for those January sale bargains!"
"The Games for Windows – LIVE client is available to download now, and uses the same user-orientated properties as the Xbox 360. Players will have a unique GamerTag which operates on both Xbox 360 and Games for Windows systems, linked to a Windows LIVE ID account that also grants features such as a free Hotmail based e-mail account and soon personalised search engine results through the recently launched Bing, and can maintain a consolidated GamerScore of the Achievements earned through playin..."
"Tyger! Tyger uppercut!
Tyger knee him in the gut.
What jump forward jab or fierce
Could brave this fearful Street Fighter?
What a find! Street Fighter and poetry usually go together like peanut butter and tobacco but we've found these awesome poems that were written with real poems in mind. For example, "Tyger Uppercut" is inspired by William Blake's "The Tyger".
There's also: Carrion Console (Gerard Manley Hopkins' "Carrion Comfort), Fight Song (John Berryman's "Dream Song 14"..."
"They removed the parry system, the single greatest fighting game mechanic in the history of the genre. Street Fighter III was a miserable financial failure, so Capcom had to make a more mainstream-friendly fighting game. The parry system was wickedly hardcore, so that got axed."
"In such cases, DLC works a bit like expansions for PC games, extra content added after the fact. It's what most of us suspected DLC would be when it first came around for console games, but Capcom and Electronic Arts have recently rattled gamers by announcing planned DLC before their games are released."
Allison Boyer at Binge Gamer has been doing something new, a weekly collection of gaming and geek related contests going on. She hand picks these to make sure you don't need to sign up to anything with a credit card or what not, just basically a name, an email, and a post is just about the most required for these. I'll put the contests in the quote and Go to source for the links if you feel like entering.
"Most classic video game heroes were grizzled and muscle bound dudes, at least until Samus Aran came along. Nintendo's hardcore bounty hunter crushed the notion that female characters couldn't compete with the steroid-using men in most adventure games, and when Tomb Raider's Lara Croft arrived, the following ladies achieved gender equality, thanks to their brains and combat skills."
"Theres plenty of fighting games on the market these days most of which implement the use of boob physics for their female characters. For those of you that are new to this concept, boob physics makes a woman's chest a little more bouncy than reality can offer. Many in the gaming community credit Itagaki with perfecting this engine, and it is a staple for any solid fighting game."
"Beautiful, deadly, and pigtailed - Cammy is the second female character to appear in the Street Fighter series. Though perhaps not as widely acknowledged by the mainstream as Chun-Li, the amnesic young warrior is a fan favorite, and has left her footprint eternally in the Street Fighter series. This is her legacy."
"One is a pure, bubbly and pretty-as-pink princess who rarely reveals even the skin of her ankle. The other is a sassy, sexy and no-nonsense computer program who has spent her entire existence in the nude. Within the tightly linked and extraordinarily small world of videogame voice acting, however, these two women are the exact same person."
"As I descended into the dark, cavernous cave that is the Casinos arcade, I immediately spotted the glow of the Street Fighter IV machine. It wasnt hard - the game had attracted a large crowd of typical nerdy types. Most of them were male, most had bad haircuts, and a horrific smell of B.O. permeated the air like a high school gym."
"According to the guys at Kotaku Street Fighter IV is only half finished. Technically, Capcom still has till July, but thats not a lot of time in game development years. What might Capcom do come those hot summer months and the game is still incomplete? The marketing machine cannot be stopped, the proverbial trucks are waiting to rush the game to hungry fans around the world and yet Ken still only has one working leg "
