There is an already underrated game for 2012 and the award goes to Darkness II. The quad wielding is a great gimmick. This, along with the story, are enough to set the game apart from the rest of the FPS titles.
"Dwelling within the shadows, The Darkness was a sleeper hit upon its release in 2007. During the crowded Halo/Gears of War/Call of Duty shooter era, seeing a new shooter franchise rise to center stage was odd. Even odder was that the game was an adaptation of a comic book, something that doesn’t normally bring about gamer confidence. After telling its almost frightening narrative of Jackie Estacado, The Darkness disappeared, only to be revived once again in the sequel, The Darkness II. Though..."
"The Darkness 2 can only be fully experienced in the intended way by those that have played the original Darkness game. A perfect analogy for the story of The Darkness 2 is if you were to exhale outside on a cold winters evening. Your breath twists and flows, turns and spirals and eventually evaporates back into nothingness. This is the Darkness 2 story. Please note this article contains major plot spoilers for Darkness 2."

"GamingUnion: "One of the most anticipated titles of early 2012, The Darkness II, hit store shelves this week, but could another iteration in the series be on the horizon sooner rather than later? Yes, if Digital Extremes' president, Michael Schmalz, has anything to say about it. During an interview with Gaming Union on the eve of The Darkness II's launch, Schmalz expressed that his team is "interested" in working on The Darkness III… if publisher 2K desires it.""

"GamingUnion: "A problem highlighted so often in the first-person shooter genre is the lack of any real story. Too much focus is placed on heart-pounding action and it tends to draw away from the identity of the character, and what they represent or are trying to accomplish may be lost in a hailstorm of bullets. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's hard to have your title stand out in the crowd when it's not attempting to try anything new. Enter The Darkness, an IP that's always..."

"GamingUnion: "This year’s E3 was all about the sequels. Be it Uncharted or Final Fantasy XIII, pretty much everyone had a sequel title on their radar. However, it seems as though one such sequel faded into the background. Digital Extreme’s take on The Darkness franchise has been remarkably quiet in recent times and since the game is coming out in the near future, we’d figure we’d shine some light on it.""

Come check out this decent write up about the changes it what was a great title, will it survive, or fall by the wayside, I hope not, but I'm just not a fan of cell-shading games that were once normally delivered.
It sort of degrades the experience, and makes the game look older than it should do.

"Despite its flaws, I was a huge fan of The Darkness, an atmospheric and offbeat first-person shooter that combined odd moments of downtime with crazy tentacle-murdering action. The game was a direct result of developer Starbreeze’s design aesthetic, one that made it almost a spiritual sequel to their previous title, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. At the same time, it was their handling of The Darkness license that ultimately made the game unique."
