The state of the PS3 version of Square Enix's The Last Remnant has been a mystery for months now. There were rumors it was cancelled, now a listing on Amazon Japan has revealed that it is yet to be released.
It would be nice if Square Enix finally set the record straight.
Even though the 360 and PC versions of The Last Remnant were released over a year ago, there hasn't been much news on the PS3 version, leading many people to believe that it has been cancelled.
Today Square Enix revealed a release calendar for their upcoming games, and The Last Remnant PS3 isn't even on the list. Perhaps the cancellation rumors are indeed true?
"Since the company was founded in 1983, Squaresoft has had a reputation of making good-quality video games. Since its first title to hit the North American market (Rad Racer back in 1987 for the NES) and through today the ratio of high-quality to low-quality games has greatly skewed toward the former. The company is now known as Square-Enix thanks to a merger with animé, manga, and video game company Enix."
IGN's 360 team has created a "Cheers & Tears" list comprising of 5 RPGs you should check out and 5 of them that your wallet should stay clear of. The Cheers section probably won't be much of a surprise to anyone, featuring Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Fable II, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, and Lost Odyssey. The Tears list is made up of Dark Messiah, Phantasy Star Universe, Two Worlds of Might and Magic, Spectral Force 3, and The Last Remnant.
Last Remnant, ironically dubbed Square Enix's first multiplatform title has still yet to hit the PS3, and indeed may never according to a Chris Kohler's recent experience at the GDC. When Square Enix's Hiroshi Takai was asked whether the PS3 version of the game was still happening, he was greeted with total silence. Though after its poor reception and average sales they wouldn't be blamed for dropping the game.
Quite a release week, for PC gamers especially. First we get (finally) Dark Sector, initially planned for simultaneous release, then The Last Remnant, Battleforge..life's pretty good. Although we can't recommend you pick up Dark Sector as it contains that horrid Starforce DRM.
There isn't really much exclusive stuff (not a bad thing, really), with PS3, Xbox 360 and PC owners alike receiving Stormrise, Wanted, and Wheelman, with the latter two seeing Legends of Wrestlemania.
DS owners ca...
"If you actually play the PC demo for the game youll probably think that. At first I thought it was just a terrible, terrible port, and it is. The port is probably the most sloppy Ive every seen. The controls, the options, and everything are just pathetic. Then I found out that it was more than that, the actual game was horrible too. Its so bad, I actually laughed at it several times."
"Square Enix has released a playable demo of The Last Remnant, allowing you to try out the PC version which will be available on 20th March. Thanks: DemoNews.de. In The Last Remnant, a vast, war-torn battlefield is scarred by years of conflict. Countless enemies surround the player, who is backed up by his own army. Threatened by numerous foes and saved in the nick of time by allies, players will feel the true tension of a soldier on the battlefield. As many as seventy units will duke it out a..."

"Yusuke Naora, one of the developers who worked on the Japanese company's latest RPG, The Last Remnant, goes on to defend especially the teenage main characters...
The format of the RPG lends itself well to having a teenage protagonist. Usually youre playing for many hours, taking a character on a journey from a relatively weak state to one of power and maturity, a gameplay journey that mirrors that of a teenager moving into adulthood. Thats certainly one of the reasons it works well hav..."
"6:00 AM - Romp through the garden with your pets.
Slightly obvious imo: Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise, Viva Pinata: Pocket Paradise, of course there is the sad chance it could be one of those many many (many) Ubisoft Petz games
8:00 AM - A PS3 game that dreams are made of.
A couple of choices here that all kind of make sense: LittleBigPlanet, Eternal Sonata, SingStar
11:00 AM - This should hold you over on Xbox 360 until Final Fantasy XIII releases.
These two Square games come to ..."
"Square Enix developer Hiroshi Takai has given a big endorsement to Microsoft's console, stating that it's "a lot easier" to work with than the PS3.
"It's been the team's first time working with Xbox 360 and the Unreal Engine," he said. "In both cases the experience has been a positive one. In fact, as we've only just finished work on Last Remnant I don't even know what my next project is going to be at Square Enix. However, I'm very much hoping it'll be for Xbox 360 as it's been a lot easi..."

Electronic Theatre reports on the confirmation of the availability of Official Japanese Import Soundtrack CDs from SquareEnix. The collection includes soundtracks from The Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy X and more...
"Everyone remembers Final Fantasy X one of the most renowned and loved Final Fantasy title out there - at least on the PS2. The games that were released after that FFXI & FFXII were good, but many didn't consider FFXI to be even part of the series (I know I didn't), and FFX-2 & FFXII got mixed feelings (though I was one that loved and enjoyed both the games, albeit I didn't like the story of either too much, the gameplay was addictive enough for me). The one thing many people bring up and reme..."
Released just a couple of weeks ago, Square-Enix have been quick to announce the Downloadable Content for the game, the first of which is releasing next week (+ another weeks wait if your a silver member). There are four downloadable packs which will be releasing over the next month, three of which will be free, and 1 costing only 100MSP.
"The Last Remnant is a technical mess, but it's also behind the curve in so many ways. While games like Fallout 3 and Mass Effect use voiceovers for every conversation, The Last Remnant doesn't even voice every main story sequence. While games like Eternal Sonata offer immaculately detailed environments, The Last Remnant often tosses you into cookie-cutter battles in repetitive bland caves or barren fields. And while games like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey deliver towns to explore and secrets ..."
Gamepro has reviewed The Last Remnant, and the verdict has come back mixed. There are apparently some awesome moments in there, awesome graphics, fantastic environments and solid voice acting. But is hampered by repetitive battles, a cluttered screen and some rather annoying quests. It looks like Square hasn't managed to recapture the magic in this latest offering.

"We're going to take advantage of our booths being side-by-side, because both the Square Enix and Microsoft booths are working in tandem. This time around, we're putting the greatest importance in getting the largest number of visitors to play our games. At the Microsoft and the Square Enix booths, we're holding a lottery. The winner gets to go to the Square Enix booth and play... You'll have to wait to that day to see what happens. (laughs) "

In under a months time now The Last Remnant will be playable at the Tokyo Game Show, but it seems that Square Enix have brought the game out of hiding a little earlier an expected with this feature in the latest Famitsu.
[The Last Remnant Forum]
When Square Enix announced their Tokyo Game Show line up with no designated form for The Last Remnant or Star Ocean 4, it was a given that they would appear as trailer only titles. "We always consider the territory and hardware for titles, and I just want to make sure that we're neutral about dealing with companies," said Wada speaking in an exclusive interview published today.
"In Japan we know that the Xbox 360 isn't really that strong yet, but for me I feel very calm about dealing with any company, and w..."

Infinite Undiscovery, the first in a series, will be out Septemeber 2 for North America, Septemeber 5 for Europe, and Japan on Septemeber 11. Certainly strange they're getting a game last, especially an RPG, but president John Yamamoto says they plan on making upcoming releases global events.
The Last Remnant, powered by the Unreal Engine 3 (as was Lost Odyssey), will be on the Xbox 360 this winter; its PS3 window is unknown.

With more news out of the Microsoft RPG Premiere 2008 in Japan, the Unreal Engine-powered The Last Remnant, published and developed by Square Enix, was announced to be a timed exclusive for the Xbox 360, with the PlayStation 3 version following at a later date. The game was originally touted to be the first multiplatform worldwide release for Square Enix.
The game features two main characters, one of whom, Rush Sykes, is geared to the Japanese, while the other, The Conqueror, is geared to...
"According to a reliable source at SCEJ, Square-Enix has something big planned for The Last Remnant's release. Or rather, they have two "something bigs" planned. First up: they will be including a 22-minute playable demo of Final Fantasy XIII with the PS3 version of The Last Remnant. This demo lets us play through a section of FFXIII that doesn't occur until a good 20 hours into the game, which leads us to believe the developers are progressing nicely. Heck, they might even be ahead of schedul..."
In the recent Famitsu issue here are the top 20 games most wanted from Japan's biggest games magazine. It's a really interesting list as what dominates the list in being No.1 is Dragon Quest IX for the Nintendo DS and then followed by Final Fantasy XIII which was at No.1. Third place comes the highly anticipated Resident Evil 5. A list containing top notch games. Too bad only one game from 360 makes it.
Speculation is currently looming over what Microsoft will be offering at the Tokyo Games Show tomorrow for there Xbox 360. Rumours build up from a great line up of products with the likes off Konami's Winning Eleven, Microsoft Game Studio's Halo 3, Koei's Blade Storm and Square Enix's The Last Remnant including many more. But I guess we will find out tomorrow for sure.
"
In the world of RPGs, no developer/publisher's games are more closely watched than those of Square Enix. Its newest title for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, The Last Remnant, promises to give gamers an experience unlike any we've seen before.
