The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

The first in a new weekly series of top 10 lists every Tuesday. This week, in celebration of the release of Skyward Sword, is the Top 10 Legend of Zelda Games. Do you agree with the list?

Video games make good Movies. Video Games also make good fake Movie trailers. They are hilarious and coming from video games you would never expect. So check them out!

The Nintendo DS system is one of the most popular handhelds in gaming and has garnered a massive consumer base since its release. What will happen to Nintendo's current dual screen powerhouse when the 3DS launches?

"Phantom Hourglass has one of the weirdest endings of any Zelda game to date. After Link restores power to the legendary Ocean King, he gives this cryptic message: "The time for you to return to your world is near. The door to your world is about to open." There wasn't really anything in the game prior to this that suggested any kind of crossing between worlds. For example, the beginning of the game had you enter the Ocean King's sea just as if it were an ordinary region of the ocean.

Playe..."

"While I sing praises to The Wind Waker for recapturing a bit of the magic of exploring Hyrule that took the stage in the original Legend of Zelda, the fact remains that the large, spacious ocean is, indeed, largely empty, and long and tedious trips through its waves have left the bitter taste of sea salt in their wake for many Zelda fans. Even though boat travel already made an encore appearance in Phantom Hourglass, with similarly-mixed reception, I feel there's potential yet for it to facto..."

"The Nintendo DS has found its way into the hands of millions of people. With its impressive range of hardcore to casual games, there is literally a game for just about anyone and everyone. Since its launch, there have been numerous games that stood out among the rest and are begged to be played and replayed. We’re going to help you out by picking out 10 must-have gems that should be a part of every DS collection."

"Since there are literally hundreds of thousands of games out there, it’s no easy task for lead characters to make a lasting impression on the player. Once in a while however, you'll come across a leader that's different. Somehow, that character manages to set himself apart from the others."

The title sounds somewhat of a fairy tale story don't you think? Well good, because IGN take a look back at games that most young Fantasy RPG veterans have grown to love. A name that have become beholden to Nintendo ever since it's inception in 1983 on the Famicom Disk System. So sit back, relax and read on for a little history lesson on one of our favorite RPG Fantasy heroes - Link.

"A project nearly eight months in the making, Zelda Informer is proud to present our staffs Top 5 Zelda Game listing. It's always a great debate on what games are truly the cream of the crop, but these 5 titles, no matter how many re-votes, discussions, and debates... always rose to the top of the pile."

"Lets look at the complaints about Zelda that have been uttered since Ocarina of Time. Majora's Mask's 3 Day system makes the game unaccessible and the game is "too hard". Oracle of Seasons and Ages were not made by Nintendo, the boss fights are too difficult, and the combined ending was too convoluted to expect anyone to experience it. Four Swords and by extension The Minish Cap is too easy. Twilight Princess is too much like Ocarina of Time. Phantom Hourglass is too cartoony, stylus controls..."

"With The Legend of Zelda series being one of the most successful gaming franchises to date, what I am about to say will probably come as a shock, but none the less, it is all true. In its current state, The Legend of Zelda franchise will not ever be, and is not currently respected by the average hardcore gamer. It is my intention to state what elements of the game that needs changed to bring the series up to par and make it more worthy of respect. While stating all of this however, I will not..."

"This generation has seen its fair share of epic titles, captivating narratives and intense action -- but not very many iconic, unique, or influential game characters in comparison to previous generations. Luckily though, there are a few of these figures in the current generation."

"Darksiders is considered by many to be a great game, albeit one that suffers from an intense case of plagiarism. Comparisons to the The Legend of Zelda run amok, with even the game's developer, Vigil, happily confessing to borrowing gameplay elements from the classic Nintendo franchise.

Let us at least try and be honest here. If you've played one Zelda game, you've played them all. Some stupid little elf starts off doing nothing, goes to a dungeon, gets a boomerang, gets a hookshot, gets ..."

"Just about ever video game franchise focuses on the adventures and trials of one or a few major characters within their respective universes. Link, Zelda and Ganondorf are the three individuals when applying this formula to The Legend of Zelda. These characters are the center of nearly all of the games in the series, with their roles differing slightly each time they appear. However, while we control Link, we encounter various side-characters that offer us help along our journeys in the land ..."

"Lets look at things objectively first. Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma have both staked claims that Link is you. It's often the reason given that if voice acting were to happen, no one wants Link to talk. Often times it the reasoning we have for him not having as much emotion as someone who is saving the world should have. Developer intent is that Link is us, so thus, he must be. Not so fast."

"It's been four full years since the introduction of the Nintendo DS. This dual-screen, touch-screen handheld was a system first received with skepticism when it launched in the US in November of 2004. Over time, it began to prove itself. The dual-screened handheld that had everyone, gamers and developers alike, scratching their heads has become the most popular and most purchased piece of video game hardware.

But it's not on the strength of the hardware alone. The reason why Nintendo's DS ..."

Over the long history of video games, many great characters have been created. In this article we look at what we think are the 12 most popular video game characters. Enjoy!

"10. Magic Powder (Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening)
The first item on our list is particularly strange. For starters, you get the magic powder in Link to the Past by finding a magic mushroom and giving it to a witch. Once acquired, the magic powder has many weird uses, ranging from transforming your enemies to waking up a mysterious bat-like creature who makes your magic more powerful. The most awesome use of the magic powder, however, is transforming a cucco into a human in Kakariko, who ..."

Snarkasaur of Spawn Kill highlights some of Club Nintendo's newest member's only swag. The latest additions to the site include some attractive Legend of Zelda posters.

"Games should be fun.

But sometimes they get to a point where the challenge simply becomes beyond frustrating and makes you feel like an incompetent, so you don’t finish. Sometimes maybe it is your lack of skill, but other times it is just poor game design.

Or maybe the game becomes so boring that it becomes too frustrating to even bother finishing. After all, every second is a second lost of your life you’ll never get back, and who wants to be stuck playing a game that’s no longer fun..."

A guy made a video on YouTube doing what I remember GameTrailers did quite a while ago, explaining the Zelda timeline. This guy did a complete job imo, very well done, and should be watched. However, he has received a response from Nintendo about this timeline saying.. there is no timeline. I've included the original video and the response in the quote.

During Satoru Iwata's keyboard at the 2009 Game Developer's Conference today, Nintendo has announced a new title for the Nintendo DS: The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. The game will feature Link on a railroad-building adventure, where he has the ability to create and control enemies to fend off other enemies. It is reportedly an extension of Phantom Hourglass's boat system.

You can view the rest of the happenings during Iwata's keynote here. Pictures of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tra...

"I loved the Lord Of The Rings films but I remember getting fidgety in the cinema during Return Of The King as Mr Frodo and Sam gazed lovingly into each other's eyes for about 10 hours. I had to resist the urge to stand up in the middle of a packed cinema and shout "JUST END"

I'm currently going through a similar feeling with The Legend Of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass although, this time, it is entirely of my own making."

"The times may change, but the legend remains: A dark wizard, a princess in peril, and an emerald-clad boy as the kingdom's only hope. Like all great fables of times long past, the story of Link has changed much over the years, retold in a new way for each coming generation, but timeless nonetheless. It's a legacy few other franchises can equal, and these 22 years have elevated Link to stand among the upper echelon of video game royalty.

That kind of legacy means walking a delicate line; co..."

Rachael Quattrini of gotgame.com has made one of the more interesting top lists of recent. This one is for the top five games in terms of usage of the Nintendo DS features. These range from the use of the microphone for in-game functions or the touch screen and stylus.

Each game is justified by some reasons why it deserves to be on the list. Are there any other games you felt made good use of the Nintendo DS capabilities?

"Tossing aside the standard temporal ocarina for something a little more complex, a "Flute Link" cosplayer performed on stage at this year's Masquerade show at the Otakon 2008 in Baltimore, bringing Navi in tow. It's a great performance, although it's hard to tell when she's playing live and when it's pre-recorded (for demonstrationg of her live performance, we also embedded a video of Flute Link performing Tetris with an Otaku band.

And for anyone who ever wished Navi would get her what fo..."

The Legend of Zelda series has often been regarded as being one of the most epic and groundbreaking series of all time. The original Legend of Zelda for the NES introduced us to the dungeon-crawling formula, while later games for the SNES and N64 refined the gameplay, controls, and graphics. The N64 entry, Ocarina of Time, is often debated as being the greatest game of all time. (it holds an average review score of 99% on Media Critic)

"Bioshock
This atmospheric first-person shooter game drew players in to a unique dystopian setting and broke ground with a storyline that forced players to make moral decisions.

Portal
One of the most original (and funny) games in recent history requires players to solve puzzles using a teleporting "Portal Gun." It also features a hugely compelling character in the computerized guide GLaDOS.

Rock Band
The studio that created toy-guitar game phenomenon "Guitar Hero" cranked the volume ..."

Kotaku.com recently held a "Reader's Choice Awards" in which regulars of the site could vote for their favorite game of 2007 from each console.

And while not everyone was happy with how the awards were conducted, the results were still tallied and winners were still announced.

"Console and handheld modder Michael Page mailed in to let us know about his latest creation: a custom Blue & White Zelda DS Lite. Inspired by Morpheon Mods’ Gold Zelda DS Lite, this one-of-a-kind mod features a finely detailed design of Link’s shield embellished in a metallic hue with two small green LEDs hidden beneath, as well as a sleek glossy sky blue paint job."

Nintendo is arranging some form of Zapper demo using a Zelda mini-game called Zelda Crossbow Training. Could this be the Zelda that was said to be in the works, and is this one game or is it going to be a mini-game collection? Believed to use the Twilight Princess engine, the demo was shown off to GameStop managers in Las Vegas today.

"That’s right! The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the Nintendo DS has been given an October 19th release date for Europe. While it’s only a little under two months away, check out these nine screens to help ease the wait:"

A new preview of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass was published just moments ago on Hooked Gamers. Apparently, the game is controlled using only the Nintendo DS stylus. Also, unlike other games in the series, Phantom Hourglass will allow you access to some parts of the final area before completing all the dungeons, but it's probably pretty obvious you'd have to clear all the dungeons to be able to finish the game. It will be interesting to see what kind of other innovations are made as ...

"Four years ago, Eiji Aonuma took on one of the most difficult jobs in the game industry: Shigeru Miyamoto's. He was made producer of the Legend of Zelda series, taking the reins of one of the world's most popular and enduring game franchises.

Having just finished the wonderful Phantom Hourglass for Nintendo DS, Aonuma is enthused about the future of the Zelda series, and says that his teams will create similarly re-envisioned Zelda experiences on both Wii and DS.

Eiji Aonuma: With this ..."

"We've got the latest Nintendo release schedule that reveals the much anticipated European release dates for two of its biggest upcoming games.

Samus' massive Wii debut isn't far off because Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is hitting stores on October 26. YES!

And Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (aka The Best Game on DS) is sailing it's way to our little island a week before that: October 19."

While we’ve still been left hanging for a European or Australasian release date, the news that the first English-language version of Phantom Hourglass will be available in just under three months is likely to cause a bit of a stampede to importers... especially from the GamerSquad ranks.

"The sand glass of the legendary fantasy of [zeruda]” (DS, Nintendo Co.) it became the large hit which is approached to 350,000 book which exceeds expectation. From sale acquiring the boldly top in only 2 days. It probably means that the intuitively know operation of being by the touch pen receives to the light/write user."

"The latest software sales figures from Media Create have revealed that the DS is continuing to dominate in Japan, with more than two-thirds of the top 30 titles having been published for Nintendo's handheld.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass goes straight in at number one this week, selling more than 300,000 copies. That's over twice as many as the number two title, Square Enix's Itadaki Street DS."

With more than 10 minutes of collected gameplay to reveal, GamerSquad has put together a selection of lengthy clips that put iconic Link to work in traditional dungeon surroundings, battling an evil boss, and also utilising the DS touch-screen elements. There's even the game's full opening cinematic. Prepare to lose huge chunks of your life when Phantom Hourglass finally arrives.

"The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass will arrive in Japan later this week on the back of a near-perfect score from esteemed Japanese mag Famitsu. Link’s first appearance on Nintendo’s DS handheld has become only the seventeenth game in over two decades to score 39/40 in the publication; only six games have achieved a perfect score."

"What we have here is a tantalisingly brief double dose of Trailer Park goodness, ably showcasing Link’s newly discovered DS talents – with the player’s outside assistance, of course. By utilising the DS stylus, it’s possible to perform Link’s famed spinning sword attack, amongst others, as well as draw a flight path on the screen which Link’s trusty boomerang will follow in order to attack isolated enemies or help solve pesky puzzles."

"If you paid close attention to yesterday's Phantom Hourglass commercials, you might've spotted the lobster design (or is it a crayfish?) on Link's shield. What do you think of the new look? Wind Waker fans should recognize the crustacean shape, as it originally showed up on our hero's pajamas in the GameCube game.

Link's shield has been as much a staple of the Zelda series as the adventurer's green cap, deflecting octorok attacks and pushing away charging enemies. Over the past two decades..."

"I'll admit it, I'm not very good at Japanese, but there's one piece of news that I was able to dig out of the Phantom Hourglass feature in the latest issue of Famitsu... Phantom Hourglass will allow players to voice chat with each other!

So I've been only trying to learn Japanese on my own, so it takes a long time for me to translate anything decently. But from the little I know, I was able to piecemeal this together from the main text of the article. Now let's just hope I didn't screw any..."
