The Sky Crawlers is a novel series penned by Japanese novelist Hiroshi Mori, that follows the trials and tribulations of young fighter pilots involved in dogfight warfare in an alternate universe. An anime movie directed by the legendary Mamoru Oshii and animated by Production I.G. released in Japanese theaters earlier this month on August 2nd.
