"GamingUnion: "In honour of Final Fantasy XIII-2's release this past week, we've decided to compile a list of our ten favourite Japanese role-playing games for the current home console / handheld generation. While things have been tough in general for Japan as of late, there have been a numerous titles to truly capture the spirit of a JRPG and pushed the genre in new directions."

Some say the PSP is failure compared to the DS. Would a failure have sold over 71 million consoles worldwide? Would a failure have some of the best handheld RPGS a gamer could get? The PSP is still one of the better portable media and region free gaming devices on the market and best of all, its so affordable.

Brock from GoozerNation looks at 2008's beautiful strategy/shooter hybrid, and the tumultuous relationship he has had with the game. He discusses combat, story, and the unfortunate things that drive him crazy about the game.

Brock from GoozerNation postulates some fun game combinations, and what great gaming elements from certain games he'd like to see added to other games.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has revealed that four new games are being added to the “Playstation 3 the Best” lineup, which is the equivalent to Greatest Hits in North America.

The gaming world sure is generous. This is yet another way to help out the crisis from the earthquake that hit Japan while getting some gaming goodies. Check out the list of Sega goodies that you want that goes 100% straight to Red Cross.

Cosplayer Precious returns with yet another gorgeous gallery. This time, she has taken on the role of Selvaria Bles from Valkyria Chronicles and we're thrilled to see she's even gone on to make the weapons AND the shield in addition to everything else.

"Valkyria Chronicles 2 was developed with the Japanese market in mind. Yes that’s right American and European gamers, there’s actually a market outside of your countries. Crazy huh? So just like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest IX, moving a franchise onto a portable system with ad-hoc local multiplayer means that most players can get a sociable experience in Japan. Consumers are more likely to spend over 50 hours on a game if they can take it with them rather than having to set aside a block of..."

Check out Level 9 of the DualCast as DualShockers discusses Sega RPGS like Valkyria Chronicles and Phantasy Star franchises, the importance (or lack of importance depending on your opinion) of graphics in RPGs including whether or not 3DHD is necessary for RPGs to continue evolving, the mechanic of leveling up in RPGs and how important it is, and more!

Sega of America’s Aaron Webber comments about possibly releasing Valkyria Chronicles II on the Playstation 3. He also gave a small update on the first game possibly getting a trophy patch.

Because trophy support didn’t became mandatory until the start of 2009, plenty of great Playstation 3 exclusive games missed out on the opportunity. Here are the top five early PS3-only titles that need a trophy patch.

"Edy and her squad challenges you to six missions in this Valkyria Chronicles downloadable content pack.

Each mission focuses on a specific class. You’ll have to show Edy how well you can control a scout, shocktrooper, sniper, lancer, engineer, and tank. Players will be able to use Edy’s detachment and members of Squad 7 for these missions.

While Valkyria Chronicles is over a year old, these missions are relatively new. Japan got them in June, over a year after the game came out there. N..."

The Playstation 3 has plenty of great exclusive games. Unfortunately, some of those titles don't get the recognition (in terms of sales) they deserve.

GameDaily gives its own take at which RPG style is superior in the categories of the classic RPG, the MMORPG, the tactical RPG, the action RPG, most emotionally engaging (contains FFVII and Mass Effect spoilers), and the overall winner.

Though you might not agree with everything stated, it is an interesting read on a topic that continues to spur the interest of RPG fans.

GameStop.com is has put several Playstation 3 video games on sale. Games with the best prices online at this moment include Assassin's Creed II, Valkyria Chronicles, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, NBA 2K10 and God of War: Collection.

Canadian singer Himeka is filmed singing the opening music to the Valkyria Chronicles anime, live in Japan (skip to about the 2 min mark for the performance). This is awesome, but a bit weird. Why is she singing a song for an anime of all things? Surprisingly there’s an amazing reason

Snarkasaur from Spawn Kill hits the interwebs with another installment in his Great Characters of Gaming series. This week finds Snark musing about a batch of lovely ladies and one fellow you probably shouldn't introduce your teenage daughter to.

In this week's issue of Weekly Famitsu, Sega has confirmed that a sequel is in the works for PS3 fan-favorite SRPG title Valkyria Chronicles. The catch? Valkyria Chronicles 2 will be for Sony's portable machine.

Additional scans from Weekly Famitsu are available at VideogamerX.net. Other tidbits include Dragon Quest IX's perfect review score (10/10/10/10) and a Japanese release date for Platinum Games' Bayonetta (Oct. 26)

This week our beloved Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw takes a stab at the PlayStation 3 RPG Valkyria Chronicles. The game's been out for some time, but we're not complaining, especially to hear his thoughts on an RPG -- a nice change of pace.

Video is at the source, as always.

Did you know there was a anime based on the PS3 game Valkyria Chronicles? I certainly didn't, but after this episode I wish I had found out sooner. The first episode rests at the source, with Japanese voice acting but with English subtitles. The visuals naturally translate very well, and the story appears to be faithful the game and still interesting. Enjoy!

"Valkyria Chronicles is set in a fictitious continent reminiscent of 1930’s Europe. Divided in two and ruled by the Empire and the Federation, the Empire has set its sights on invading a small neutral country called Gallia, which is situated in the middle of the two great empires. The game follows a hero named Welkin and his fellow soldiers of Gallian civilian militia’s 7th Platoon who are fighting against the Empire. The Empire is intent on unifying the continent under its power, but Gallia d..."

"Let’s not forget about the console wars! There are sale charts, there are fanboys slamming other fanboys’ data, there are all sorts of ways to “decide” the winner of the console wars… One of them is, of course, checking the exclusive games and that’s exactly what we’re planning to do now. So, the battle is on: PS3 vs. Xbox 360 vs. Wii – which console has the best exclusives?"

"So here we are, on the 3rd January 2009, the tenth day of Christmas. A feature series running every day of the twelve days of Christmas, in The Twelve Games of Christmas Electronic Theatre runs through the greatest achievers in the videogaming year of 2008, month-by-month. "When you see long-standing publishers take a hit and respond by laying people off, canceling projects and delaying triple-A games, you know something is very wrong. And even though 2009 has a nice line-up of hardcore games that are easily classifiable as big-budget, they could be the last for a long time to come."

"Before SEGA’s 2009 train starts running, however, we have two remaining big-budget SEGA titles to run-out 2008; Valkyria Chronicles and Sonic Unleashed. Sonic Unleashed, as has now become the nature of SEGA’s mascot, is a multi-format title, whereas Valkyria Chronicles is that most elusive of beasts: a third-party PLAYSTATION3 exclusive.

The game depicts a fantasy continent, known as Europa, with two warring factions – The Empire and The Federation - and your nation of Gallia stuck in the ..."

A very special week! This is about the third week in a row we've had a killer line-up, so be prepared to make your light wallet even lighter, me thinks.

First there's Quantum of Solace (which received a "passable" IGN review), then NHL '09 for hockey fans, Resistance 2 (in a special collector's edition, too, if you fancy that sort of thing), Valkyria Chronicles (which, conversely, IGN quite liked), and Gears of War 2. Meanwhile DS owners get a couple of very special treats (just after Hall...

Valkyria Chronicles has been slipping under the radar for a while now, even though it has already been released in Japan for a couple months. Last week, Sega officially released a demo for the game, and with its tactical/strategical RPG elements interwoven into third person aiming and shooting, it's been catching on, bit by bit.

Reviews have slowly begun to show up, and while it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it's showing to have considerable promise. Having already snagged a few 9/10's...

Valkyria Chronicles is a diplomatic sort of game, it seems. At least, that's what's to come when some DLC for the game arrives in Japan this October. The content will allow gamers to control Selvaria Bles (pictured right) and invade Gallia, the small nation you defend in the main storyline, effectively giving you control of the evil empire. Not often this sort of thing happens in a game, so soak it up, lovelies.

Gamasutra's Brandon Sheffield sat down with Sega of America's CEO Simon Jeffery to discuss the house that Sonic built. The longtime Nintendo rival made headlines when it announced that it was dropping out of console manufacturing after the demise of the woefully underappreciated Sega Dreamcast. Steadily growing stronger, however, is the developer/publisher's western division, which has become the sixth biggest publisher in the United States, and has acquired a few studios in the West.

"Built upon the new "CANVAS" engine, Valkyria Chronicles' ground-breaking 3D graphics resemble a watercolor painting in motion. Gameplay is centered around a new type of tactical battle concept. Known as "BLiTZ," this battle concept gives players unique freedom to strategically move around the environment and attack enemies using real-time controls."
