Valkyria Chronicles II

Brock from GoozerNation looks at 2008's beautiful strategy/shooter hybrid, and the tumultuous relationship he has had with the game. He discusses combat, story, and the unfortunate things that drive him crazy about the game.

"It may still be 2010, but the holiday rush for video game retail releases is already over. You’ve beaten Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, explored every inch of Fallout: New Vegas, ascended to the throne in Fable III, and dominated the multiplayer matches of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Halo: Reach. So now what do you do? Sit back and wait around for the first big games of 2011? Well, that would be silly. May I suggest some terrific but under-the-radar titles from earlier this year that you prob..."

Despite not selling anywhere near as well it should have, the original Valkyria Chronicles on the PlayStation 3 is hailed as being one of the console’s best titles, especially among SEGA fans. So was the move of Valkyria Chronicles II to the PSP worth it?

"Valkyria Chronicles 2 was developed with the Japanese market in mind. Yes that’s right American and European gamers, there’s actually a market outside of your countries. Crazy huh? So just like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest IX, moving a franchise onto a portable system with ad-hoc local multiplayer means that most players can get a sociable experience in Japan. Consumers are more likely to spend over 50 hours on a game if they can take it with them rather than having to set aside a block of..."

Check out Level 9 of the DualCast as DualShockers discusses Sega RPGS like Valkyria Chronicles and Phantasy Star franchises, the importance (or lack of importance depending on your opinion) of graphics in RPGs including whether or not 3DHD is necessary for RPGs to continue evolving, the mechanic of leveling up in RPGs and how important it is, and more!

""One of the things that perplexes us around the office is why Valkyria Chronicles II has been released for a different platform than the original release. When Sega released the first game, it was for the PlayStation 3, and despite its lack of best-seller status, it gained enough of a cult following to be considered a modest hit. The sequel, of all places, is on the PlayStation Portable, which might frustrate those who were expecting next-gen goodness. However, if you own the platform and don..."

"To many, the original Valkyria Chronicles was a masterly devised and artfully created strategy RPG, regardless of how much it actually sold, it received near universal critical success. The sequel is nearly upon us, so, I thought we would put together some demo impressions for you, in a bit of a different way this time around - through pictures and sound instead of words. After the break, contributing editor Jon Ireson and myself talk about the demo in a video that shows an entire demo missio..."

"Released in North America in 2008 the original Valkyria Chronicles for the PlayStation 3 offered fans of the RPG genre something unique in its gameplay as players would still have a turn-based battle system but instead of choosing a simple command they would be able to move each individual character into position, choose the weapon, aim and attack giving the game almost a turn-based third-person shooter feel.

All-in-all the gameplay alone will make Valkyria Chronicles enjoyable as well as ..."

Canadian singer Himeka is filmed singing the opening music to the Valkyria Chronicles anime, live in Japan (skip to about the 2 min mark for the performance). This is awesome, but a bit weird. Why is she singing a song for an anime of all things? Surprisingly there’s an amazing reason

"For the first part of this generation’s life cycle there was not a lot for the PS3 in terms of RPG’s. The PS3 now has a few gems with Valkyria Chronicles and Disgaea 3, as well as a former Xbox exclusive in Eternal Sonata. With age the PlayStation 3 seems like more attractive platform for RPG developers and publishers.

Next year marks a great year in terms of Role Playing Games with the big boys Square-Enix finally releasing Final Fantasy XIII, XIII Versus and XIV. While the Final Fantasy ..."

"Interested in giving Valkyria Chronicles 2 a go and you either know Japanese or don’t mind not understanding a word that is said? Well then Sega has just the deal for you as they have today released the VC2 Demo on their official site."
