Many games are roughly based off true stories or events, but just how close to the original source material are they?
Gamespy takes a look at a handful of games that are inspired by true events that aren't anything like the true events they're inspired by...
"The fifth day of Christmas has arrived and, as those that have been following Electronic Theatre’s The Twelve Games of Christmas feature will know, today is the turn of May 2009. Incidentally, the month in which Electronic Theatre’s brand spanking new site went live! For those not in the know, everyday for the twelve days of Christmas we have been taking a look the very best that 2009 had to offer, one month at a time and suggesting what you should be looking out for in those January bargain ..."
"As Violette Summer, based loosely upon the real-life escapades of Violette Szabo, the player finds themselves filling the shoes of a beautiful spy deep within enemy lines with no support, or official backing from the British Government. In the heavily cinematic game, the story plays-out as memories from Violette’s tormented mind while she lay motionless on a hospital bed. From the very moment of beginning the game, the player knows not all will go well on this mission."
"More than just a game launch, Nexway has joined forces with SouthPeak for the digital distribution of SouthPeak’s full catalogue of videogames across France, UK, Spain, Germany and Italy, alongside the development of their corporate e-store, as well as their event websites. Velvet Assassin is SouthPeak’s first game to benefit from this partnership."
"Stealthy meets sexy in Velvet Assassin, Replay Studios' World War II stealth action title based on the true story of female Allied secret agent Violette Szabo.
As she lay dying in a military hospital, British MI6 agent Violette Summer lives out a series of espionage missions through a series of flashbacks. Using stealth and disguise she infiltrates deep behind enemy lines, taking out enemy soldiers with a wide variety of killer moves as she strives to cripple Hitler's war machine and extra..."
"British gamers interested in discovering more about Violette’s troubled past should make sure they pick up a copy of Velvet Assassin from their local Gamestation, to receive an extremely limited-edition digital graphic novel. Penned by Aeon Flux creator and world-famous artist Peter Chung, the comic details Violette’s early years and how she became a part of the war effort. The graphic novel is exclusively available in Ireland at GameStop."
Out this week on multiple platforms is almost-newbie developer Replay Studio's Velvet Assassin, which has you playing the role of a British secret agent lady in World War II, based on the real life story of Violette Szabo.
Also up is X-Men Origins: Wolverine from Raven Software (the "mature" versions anyway), which does in fact look to be at least a step above (and away from) the usual movie tie-ins.
Finally, DS owners who also happen to be Super Robot Taisden fans have OG Saga to look ...
"Velvet Assassin brings players into the world of Violette Summer, a British secret agent behind enemy lines in multiple hot-spots during World War II. Players are introduced to a bed-ridden Violette as she slips in and out of fevered dreams, reliving her most poignant missions through her memories. With no outside support, Violette must sneak her way into heavily guarded Nazi strongholds, assassinate high-level targets and even deliver cyanide to fellow operatives caught in the field. Using t..."
"SouthPeak Games have today released an extended and "uncut" version of the latest Velvet Assassin trailer. Featuring the Hollywood Undead's Young as the backing theme, the trailer demonstrates the violently stealthy gameplay in Velvet Assassin, coming soon to Xbox360 and PC."
"Generally, asking about downloadable content or sequels elicits some sort of "well, we'll see how this one goes" statement from a developer. However, a SouthPeak Interactive representative told Blend Games definitively that there would be no DLC for Velvet Assassin. Also, it's highly unlikely that we'll see a Velvet Assassin 2."
"Velvet Assassin has the core gameplay of popular stealth games like Splinter Cell or Thief. However, it remains to be seen whether Assassin has the same depth and variety of gameplay that those classics demonstrate."
"Electronic Theatre has just received the following announcement from SouthPeak Games:
Velvet Assassin is the sumptuous new stealth-action game set to deliver a breath of fresh air into the genre and up the stakes for World War II games. Players take control of Violette Summer, a beautiful spy deep behind enemy lines with no support or official backing from the British Government. Intense stealth-action gameplay with a startling real-time lighting system and surreal visuals combine to prod..."
"SouthPeak has teamed with renown graphic novel artist Peter Chung for the 15-plus page graphic novel of Velvet Assassin. And while the novel may be an exclusive at GameStop (and in limited quantities) when gamers purchase Velvet Assassin, we have a few of those images right here for your viewing pleasure."
"Like IO Interactive's Hitman, Violette can snag new outfits to better blend with her environment. Some of the outfits include a pilot's uniform, a leather sneaking suit that works well with dark areas and shadows, a Nazi uniform to infiltrate enemy ranks unnoticed, and a night dress. The explanation for why Violette wears the night dress is a bit confusing but it's more or less an excuse for fan-service. Really."
