      How do you figure that?

If you would bother to read and do basic maths before you go around criticizing, it actually has 52GB taken up. And who knows if that's the system files (which i highly doubt) or something else they have on the drive.

It's also due to "500GB" actually equating to roughly 465GB. This is due to hard drive manufacturers treating a kilobyte as 1000 bytes when selling products. A binary kilobyte is 1024 bytes, hence the huge difference between what is advertised and what you recieve.

As far as HDD's go, newegg and microcenter probably have the best deals, with tigerdirect pulling in around the top too.

Still going to be a bit expensive though... hundred or two bucks.

Nice to know if I even need a bigger HD but 60GB is good enough for me at the moment as I don't even use 20GB's of it up XD

This does cancel out the warranty of the console by doing this right?

No it does not. Sony practically encourages you to do so. The system was designed for it.

Yep, it's just the same as changing the portable hard drive on the top of the Xbox 360. The only difference is that Sony let you use pretty much any laptop hard drive at the expense of a little more time and effort. It's certainly not as portable, but it costs less money.

Sony has always been great about letting people hack their stuff - in a way they thrive on it.

Unlike Microsoft and Nintendo- Sony has rarely if ever hindered the path of hackers and modders of any nature. And it always plays out in their favor in the end.

You could practically buy a new Playstation 3 for the price of this 500GB Hard Drive. I was excited about this until I saw the price on the HDD. Day ruined.

Hardly, a used Wii maybe. If you could actually find one.

Still no need to go whole hog and get the 500GB right off the bat. There are 300GB drives out there for a reasonable price. Around $150 or so.

I didn't look at the price of this particular drive, but that's not true at all. I have a 200GB in my PS3 that was only 74 bucks. No way a 500GB drive should cost the same as a PS3.
