The new president of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida said the other day in an interview that the PlayStation 3's launch year was disaapointing, attributing some of the problem to the Xbox 360's earlier launch. Because of this, he believes developers worked based on that system's architecture when developing for Sony's system, resulting in a less than stellar library. However, he sees next year as a booming time for the console.

"...They must have been planning, thinking they have enough time, to port the second game to PS3 and release at the same time with the same quality," he said.

"So they massively underestimated the effort that was needed to re-architect the game to properly take advantage of the PS3's multi-core architecture."

Third-party developers are now coming to terms with the PS3, and will no longer need to port over Xbox 360 versions of their games.

"That re-architecture only needs to happen once, and once you pass that, you have the foundation ready."

"Moving forward I'm totally confident that developers will start to use more from the PlayStation 3 platform. This year is the year of parity, next year is the year of differentiation in favour of the PS3 platform," Yoshida said.

Yeah, both presidents that said that got fired for being dumbasses though.

As far as I can see, it basically has hit its stride. It just needs Home and an in-game XMB and it's all set.

Yes, but graphically it hasn't. And 2008 IMHO is a good year to hit its stride. Took the PS2 longer to do so.

Have you played MGS4 yet? If after playing MGS4 you still think that graphically it hasn't hit it's stride then I'd love to see the graphics that you consider to be good enough to acknowledge as reaching it's stride.

Yes, in-game XMB and Home will truly push the PS3 over the top. Lets forget about the games. Who needs those anymore?

what i think they meant was that home and xmb [in addition to up coming titles] will push it over the top.

You obviously missed his point as usual. He's saying the gap between the games on both systems is closing at a astounding rate that the only thing the PS3 needs to fully compete with 360 is In-game XMB and Home. With that and how games like MGS4 has turned out, its apparent that the future PS3 games are BRIGHT as ever. He didn't mention games cause there barely is a difference in Multiplayer games since Burnout in January. And those two will definitely even the tide with PS3 and 360 to such a way in that no console will have one thing the other doesn't......well besides massive library that is.

So does this mean that 2009 will be a better year to buy a PS3? I'm glad I waited, I am going to save up to buy one.

They mean that games exclusively for PS3 (and multiplatforms to a degree) will hit their technical peak at 2009. That's not to say you shouldn't get a PS3 until then, considering all the great games coming out in Fall 2008.
