2008 G-Phoria Award Results

Storm | August 09, 2008 | Industry News | Playstation 3 Wii
X-Play's (part of G4TV) awards show, G-Phoria, aired this past week with some dominating results. The show bases its awards off of what fans voted for, and apparently, Halo fans jumped at the chance to participate in the voting; Halo 3 took the top spot for Game of the Year, along with the Xbox 360 being awarded the favourite system. But the most unique award comes with a "lovable" director, Uwe Boll. Turok won as 'next film that Boll should head up.'

Wonder why a 2007 game won a 2008 award show? Well read below to find out.
Unlike most industry award shows, G-Phoria's twelve month of eligibility run from August of the preceding year through July of the current year.

Xbox 360 was named the station's favorite system -- which falls in line with the award distribution. Of the show's 18 game awards, only four went to titles not available on Microsoft's system: Best Graphics and Best Voice Acting for Kojima Productions' Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Best Racing Game for Nintendo EAD's Mario Kart Wii, and, by default, Best Handheld Game for Ready at Dawn's God of War: Chains of Olympus.

Whoah, what a surprise, 360 won best console. It's just a popularity contest. How many of those people voting have played all three consoles regulary and have played and beaten all of the game of the year noms?

I can vouch for that and vote for 360 being the best, but you're right, they don't all play the other consoles reguarly, and it is a popularity contest, the viewers are in control.

The only two people I'd take seriously from G4 are Kevin Pereira and Adam Sessler.

I think best console and best library are completely different things, at least when we're talking about the 360..haha.

Big surprise, Halo 3 GOTY. I don't know what is so damn special about it.

        Have you played MGS4 yet?

I love how easy people find it to throw around the word fanboyism lately.

I don't see how they can vote a game GOTY when not all games have been out yet, Spore should get GOTY for its innovation and overall awesomeness.

You've got a point. And while I don't agree with the final GOTY result, I do think MGS4 got [most] of the recognition it deserved.

As mentioned, it's done from Summer to Summer. Who knows, maybe we'll get Spore for GOTY next year...or not, considering that it's more about the consoles with this award show.

They do it for the games from summer to summer. So these GOTY noms were from summer 2007 - summer 2008

It would really make a lot more sense to do it in the January following each year..

Those rewards always stay the same, it's only the fanboy factor that makes the change between them...

It is all a popularity contest. There are way more 360 fans then Wii fans.

He means out of "hardcore gamers". Casual people who buy the Wii don't care about some little voting show.

I know, I was simply pulling his leg, taking a shot at Wii (though I <3 the console). Didn't do it as good as you did above, Demonfurby. xD

Let's not forget, people who watch G4 and actually vote on those polls have no lives.
