Analyst Jesse Divnich says that Sony is in trouble this holiday season with the PS3, after the 360 got a recent price cut. The PS3 is the console with the highest price, and the smallest video game library. Meanwhile the Wii and DS are still largely outselling the other systems.

If there's one console maker that should worry about Xbox 360's multi-model price cut, it's Sony, claims analyst Jesse Divnich with Electronic Entertainment Design and Research.

"[Between Sony and Nintendo,] Sony should be the most concerned [about the 360's price cut]," he told Edge on Thursday. "...Going into this holiday season, the PS3 will not only have the highest price point, but also the smallest software library, weaker line-up of exclusive titles (compared to Xbox 360’s Gears of War 2 and Fable 2), and a less popular online network."

Divnich said that Sony should "heavily consider" a hardware price cut in the next few months in order to keep pace.

Currently, Sony's de facto standard 80GB PS3 retails in the U.S. for $399, while Microsoft's range of Xbox 360s now start at $199.

Sony has said that it will not be reducing the price of the PS3 this year.

"I suspect that the reason why Sony has been so adamant about maintaining its current price point is because it has not reached a more efficient scale in its manufacturing of the PS3," said Divnich.

Didn't the 360 get a slight price cut just after E3 to shift stock and it just didn't do anything to make the 360's sales better. I just think these analysts wait for times like this to show they are still alive, i await Mr Pachter to come out and say "oh this won't do anything if anything the PS3 might do better" or something haha.

Does analyst mean "a person with common sense" now?

      Koloth Sep 6, 08
No, it more closely means "psychic". All an analyst does is make predictions on the future of a product. A good analyst is supposed to look at trends and release schedules and so on and so fort and try and predict the ups and downs. But there is no real common sense involved.

I could say based on past trends that the Wii will do better than the 360 this fall. And there is a pretty good chance I will be right. But it isn't common sense. Because I could have a bias towards the Wii which would sway my prediction. One would hope though that most analyst (or people claiming such titles) are unbiased and just looking at the data.

Who actually reads any of these articles apart from the heading?

Weaker software lineup? Whole article fails for that reason. They give TWO 360 games to compete with the PS3's huge Fall lineup.

    FAIL.

      Haha, huge?! Whaaaat.....

      Storm Sep 6, 08
That's because all it takes are two 360 games.

I kid I kid, Sony fanatics. 360 has it's Fall update, the price drop, exclusives, all that RabidChinaGirl mentioned, so it's bound to pick up. Actually, all I should say is that the 360 has Gears of War 2.

So the PS3's lineup for Fall isn't 'huge', but the guy makes it bloody sound like all the PS3 is releasing is one single game this Fall. If he hasn't looked up Sony's library lately, he needs to do that.

I'm also surprised that pretty much everyone is still convinced that the PS3 is still doing badly...

Two years? More like two months... and that's only by around 5k units a month.

Two months? Try 7 months with around 5k units difference.

Also what he means is the PS3 basically outsold the 360 in its first year comparisons of the two, while also in a way outselling the 360 in 07. Which he's also saying they've also outsold the 360 the majority of 08 every month except one month which was June. And these have been reported as such.

          only 5k.. according to vgcharts
          360: 103k
          ps3 :172k
thats this weeks alone... but people could be waiting for the price cut

I can see his reasoning behind the article, and I guess a price drop would be a nice holiday boost for Microsoft. But it's not like he's bringing anything new to the table.

Final points of interest: (1) Microsoft is cheaper now and has more exclusives, (2) PS3 banking on long term appeal, and (3) Nintendo is charging ahead of them both. BREAKING NEWS, STOP THE PRESSES.

He didn't mention Resistance 2 or LBP, and I wonder if he either doesn't think they matter or simply doesn't know about them.

      Storm Sep 6, 08
That's true. LBP and Resistance 2 are two of the PS3's heavy-hitters this Fall. I guess he really didn't take them into account, probably just watching the numbers...or is it due to the sequel-hype outweighing the PS3, such as what the 360 is getting like Fable II and Gears 2? Who knows.

Here's a clue, given the past 8 months, the PS3 has pretty much outsold the 360 in 7 of those months. So honestly I don't see the 360 outselling against the PS3, but really not doing anything substantial to the other, where as the Wii is just going to shit on both. So really what is this article proving?
That Analysts have nothing better to do and make predictions for the holiday season and trying to stir rabid fanboys all over the net to attack each other. lulz.

Yet the 360 is still selling apparently, even with a decent gap between the launches. The PS3 is in catch up mode, that's it.

Funny, where in my post did I say other wise? The point Im making is while the PS3 has been outselling the 360 in 7 of the 8 months maybe 5,000 difference, its not going to magically outsell the PS3 come holiday season. You forgot the PS3 has some heavy hitters with LBP and Resistance 2. My real point is saying, Neither the PS3 or 360 will outsell each other but the Wii will. Thats all.

    Zerpent Sep 6, 08
Well, I personally think it's ridiculous to even try and predict how the sales will be in this market. Who knows? LittleBigPLanet just might help boost the PS3 enough this season to make it a serious competitor to the 360? Or the 360 might get a huge boost in its sales? Either way, the Wii will beat them both. And the DS will beat them all.

this price cut will only help in the US as for the EU they already had a 360 price cut and it has done nothing to improve sales there while ps3 is selling very strong there and japan is wii and ps3 place and sells for 360 there are bound to be average to low

      Slumpy monkey Sep 6, 08
Thats because the price cut was on the 20 GIG model, while they announced that the 60 gig will go on sale for the old 20 gig price, So any one who researched would have waited until the 60 comes out.

the 60gb has been out in the EU for a few weeks now with the 299 price
