A quote from Shane Kim that seems just like fanboy fodder to me, nothing more. It is amusing though, thinking that the 360 would actually last as long as the PS3.. because even I believe one day developers will utilize the PS3.

...a comment made by Microsoft's top dog, Shane Kim. It's getting to be about the time in a console's life cycle when rumors or a successor begin to swirl, and naturally Kim was asked about when we could expect to see Microsoft ditch the 360 in favor of another console.

So when will Microsoft stop selling the Xbox 360? According to Kim:

One day longer than the lifespan of the PlayStation 3"

How do we know the PS3 will last 10 years? Because Sony say so?

I sincerely doubt that 512MB of RAM will be enough in 10 years time.

        Zero and X Nov 19, 08
I don't think RAM has to do with anything, PS2 is still making games now and it had the lowest specs compared to its competetors.

PS3 only has 256mb of RAM. To think they can last more than 3 more years with that is crazy.

The RAM hardly ever gets worked because the processors take care of everything.

@ Zero and X: The PS2 isn't genuinely competing with the PS3/360 though, is it? No. In 5 years time the PS3 may be in the same position the PS2 is in now, but in all honesty, MS won't be worried about it.

@ Moonrise: how come whenever I try to open 2 Youtube videos I get a "OOPS NO ENOUGH MEMORY, CLOSE A WINDOW LOL" message?

Because the PS3 is for games and not for viewing youtube videos? Don't be an idiot.

Oh, I'm not saying that the main purpose of the PS3 is to view youtube videos.

Point I'm making is that I can't see how a piece of hardware that reacts that way when 2 youtube videos are open in the browser can have anywhere near enough RAM to see it through the next 8 years.

I find it particularly funny that your complaint is a load of shit, as I'm currently watching 4 youtube videos simultaneously without issue.

edit: I'm also playing music at the same time as well.

          Bullshit.

I open two windows with decent size videos (ie: not 10 seconds) and I get a message saying something along the lines of "There is not enough memory, please close a window.

[then a list of open windows]"
        • 1
          Fatal Error Nov 20, 08
No, you're full of shit. I opened 4 windows with 4 videos (all 7 minutes or longer in length) and they played fine. I viewed the windows all at once (using the window list) and they didn't have any issues, other than some slowdown in framerate. I played a song with the media player and nothing went wrong.

You're the one that's full of shit.

Kim Jong Il Nov 20, 08
You seem awfully protective of the PS3, moreso than usual.

When I've tried to open multiple Youtube video's the system can't cope, I get an error message about there not being enough memory.

Believe me or not, I really don't care.

Fatal Error: You have no idea how computer systems work do you?

The RAM will be the bottleneck in the PS3.

          Fatal Error Nov 20, 08
Funny thing is that I know exactly how computer systems work, and that's why I'm able to say that the RAM doesn't get worked much because the processors take care of everything.

You don't understand the intent and function of the Cell processor, do you?
        • 2
          Slumpy monkey Nov 20, 08
Wtf? of course the RAM is used, the processor needs memory for it to process things.

Games don't yet take advantage of the cell, so maybe only 3 cores would actually be being used.
        • 1
          Fatal Error Nov 20, 08
No *bleep*ing shit the RAM is used; I never said it wasn't. The Cell processor is designed so that RAM usage is minimized because the processors are capable of working "real-time".

CAN last 10 years, but with the lack of PS3 support (not as much of a problem now, but still), the constant outgoing flow of cash and lack of adequate profit (well, that's how it was last time I checked anyway) it's a question of whether Sony and the PS3 WILL last, not if they can.

        HisServant77 Nov 19, 08
Look back at history and the PS2. Sony tends to develop their machines with the future in mind, instead of the present. Just like the PS2, the PS3 started out slowly, and had some troubles and accusations, but then look at it today, which is in it's 8th year?

I think the PS3 will last for as long as Sony supports it. Which they'd better support it for a LONG time.

But we really can't base it off of present situations, unless Sony Presently says they are not going to support it anymore.

Tiger of Wu Nov 19, 08
Hey, don't get me wrong, I believe and want the PS3 to last, otherwise it would have been a waste of my money. I'm just saying, it's not a question of if it can (because it obviously can) it's a question of if it will which, as you've said, at present is still a question.

          Final Blade Nov 19, 08
That's a silly question Tiger, if past history(PS1) and current(PS2) is teaching us anything is IT WILL be supported for that long. Its Sony's business model, its what they've always been doing and still doing.

Also I like to say the article is saying 360 is being supported for as long as PS3, just to make sure people don't misinterpret it. PS4 and Xbox 720 or whatever its called will be released around 2012-13.
        • 1
Tiger of Wu Nov 20, 08
Oh yes, because everything happens as the past has happened. There's no chance the company could screw up on something. No chance more lawsuits could crop up. No, that's impossible.

If the past has taught us anything it's that the past means nothing in comparison to chance. Luck. Like I've said, I believe the PS3 will last (how you've missed that is beyond me), but to say it definitely will is stupid. Can you see the future? No. Do you know for sure that it will? No. Is it 100% everything-proof? No. Is there still a chance it will fail? Yes.

          Then it's still a question.

          Final Blade Nov 20, 08
Tiger I never missed it, I just didn't respond to it.

Point is to completely forget how Sony systems work is idiotic. The system will be supported for 10 years its fact. Why its fact its cause its part of Sony's business plan and how they do things with their consoles. Did you miss that?

360 is also, according to this article, going to be supported for 10 years.

It's like talking to a brick wall -_-

Okay, so let's say Sony get sued and become bankrupt. Would that be a part of their business plan? THINGS DON'T ALWAYS GO ACCORDING TO PLAN, THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING FFS. They have a plan, a good one, one that has worked before. Doesn't mean it absolutely, positively, 1000000% will work now.

I've already said I expect it to last so what the hell do you want from me? Because I'm not a mindless robot who believes every step they take turns the dirt under their feet into gold all of a sudden I'm saying the PS3 won't last? Seriously, you either have an inability to understand basic logic or just enjoy trying to annoy me. Either way, if you think I don't believe in their plan from what I've said then quite frankly you're not worth my time. Anybody's time for that matter. To completely forget how Sony systems work is idiotic, I agree. Good thing I never did. To accuse someone of overlooking how they work (which is what you essentially did) even though that person has stated they believe that Sony's plan will work is beyond idiotic.

Meh, sounds to me like he is just saying they will hang in there as long as Sony hangs in. Clearly they are in no rush to get the next Xbox to market. And that works for me. Probably see both of them releasing their next gen systems between 2011 and 2013.

Tbh with you, all these predictions are just stupid.

I laughed when the PS3 was released and Sony stated it'd last for 10years, seriously, i give it 5tops.

      Koloth Nov 19, 08
6 to 7. Both the PS1 and PS2 had about 7 year life cycles. Short of the PS3 actually rolling over and dieing (unlikely) it will probably last about 6 years. I'm expecting a 2012-13 release of the PS4.

However Sony was more likely refering to the fact that they will support the PS3 for 10 years. The PS1 was supported for 10 years. They were releasing games for it right up until about 03. The PS2 is still being supported. And will probably continue to be supported until 2010. And the PS3 will be supported until about 2016.

Yeah but how many of the games that are released on the PS2 nowadays are actually decent games and not just multiplatform junk?
Only one i can think of atm thats being released soon is the Kingdom Hearts game thats remade from the GBA one.

That's not the point. PS2 is still selling thousands of units a month BECAUSE its still supported. Crappy games is your opinion anyway. The console is selling to a different audience at this point, not hardcore gamers. Sony could have chosen to drop it like the first XBOX, but both PS1 and PS2 have a 10 year life cycle. Its a part of their business model. I still can't believe that 2 years after PS3 has been out, people still don't understand what Sony means when they say PS3 has a 10 year lifespan.

The 360 has already been around for 3 years and people are very content with it. I don't know about them lasting another 10 years on top of it but they'll probably last another 2-5 years at least.

    Bale Fire Nov 20, 08
Microsoft will have to dig deep to keep making games if the PS3 lasts as long as the PS1 or PS2. They dumped the original Xbox pretty fast, though the 360 is better off this time around, so I guess we'll see.
    • 1
      Koloth Nov 20, 08
They dumped the original because it didn't sell well enough to bother with anymore. The 360 has already out sold the previous Xbox. Microsoft can hold on to the 360 because by 2012 it should have plenty of units in place. At least half as many as the PS2 did by 6 years time at any rate. Which would still be 3 times as many as the Xbox. So Microsoft has nothing to worry about this gen. And no reason to rush to the next.
