Yahoo!: 2008 the Year of the Wii

So you're probably wondering which console manufacturer won 2008. What's that? You haven't?! What kind of fanboy are you?!

Well those with a Nintendo Wii should be happy to know that their favorite console led the console wars, with the 360 coming in second place and the PS3 lagging behind in third trying desperately to climb up to the top.

"As for Sony, well, they just can't catch a break. The company scored a major coup when Blu-ray officially trounced HD-DVD in the hi-def format war, but few believe the technology will catch on with consumers. Strong sales of big-time exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 were promising, but the troubled launch of their 'Home' network coupled with relatively weak holiday sales (only Resistance 2 cracked the Top 10 list in November, all the way back at number 9) cramped their style. The once-promising PSP is getting whomped by both the DS and Apple's surging iPhone. Did a witch cast a spell on these guys or what?"

    You fanboys can complain all you want, but there's nothing wrong with a console lots of "hardcore gamers" don't like taking first spot.

    Personally this was obvious and it's a good thing for Nintendo as they needed the Wii to sell, after the GameCube i felt this was their last chance. Many people get at Sony for not trying this generation but they are the only company that doesn't need to, it was Nintendo and Microsoft that had the ultra bad sales last generation. So for Nintendo this is great that they have killed the competition for yet another year, though i wonder how far can these sales go. Will it beat the PS2 at 140 million? I can't wait to find out.

    PS. I mentioned Sony not trying. It's pretty obvious that if even less than half of the people that own PS2s upgrade to PS3s Sony will not only kill Microsoft's sales of the Xbox 360 but they could even kill the Wii. That may not happen but Sony are currently the only company with that potential safety net.

      I have to agree. I am far from a fanboy, but I have to admit that Sony is like a sleeping giant almost. It's like they build up a HUGE army secretly and send out only what is necessary to stay in the race, while the others use all they have. Sony is in it for the long run and the others seem to aim for the "present-day winning." Just look at Sony's past. It's the same this time around too. Slow start, but then in the long run it's like they demolished the competition! It seems in some cases Sony is very wise with business dealings (and in other cases the most foolish).

      So it makes me kinda laugh inside when I hear all these people saying how Sony and the PS3 is failing and lagging far behind. I just say to myself "Well . . . we'll see . . ."

    I just dont see it. The wii and PS3 cannot be compared. They are totally different, the wii is for soft gamers who want a laugh. The PS3 is for people looking for quality. Tut tut.

      You can't compare a child's game console with games > graphics to an apparent "multimedia" machine that is able to be used by scientists for black hole experiments.

        its only cause the casual gamers far outweigh the hardcore gamers in sheer numbers, is why the Wii sells more. lots of ppl get Wiis just to play Wii Sports, which is incredibly sad if you ask me. Wii Sports is fun for about 5 minutes.

          No I never said I care about anything. I stated no one cares what Yahoo is trying to target, which is the Casual market. Casual people who buy the console doesn't give a shit if it outselling anything. They're not into games as much as we are. And have other things to do then to worry and cry over things like "Is it outselling 360 or PS3 this week or month?"

          I know the Wii is outselling both systems, but I wasn't referring to that when I stated it's wrong. I was talking about this:

          PS3 might be behind in console sales, but hardly being desperate. The PS3 has more kickass games then the Wii can ever dream of, and more top quality games this year then Wii.
          Haze and Lair is probably better then a good handful of the game Wii has.
          PS3 had the best year in 08. In some respects, I'd say the PS3 did loads better then the Wii and 360. And 09 is looking to be loads better. But since analyst and people like Yahoo only care about Console sales, and not the whole package, it means nothing.

    Does this surprise anyone the Wii took off tripped up it's competitors and never looked back. I'm glad it did to as Nintendo is one of the best video game makers and after the failure of the Gamecube I wondered what the future was for them. Microsoft is just doing what they need to and I expect to see them have second most sales when the generation ends. Then there's the ps3. When most of the people who bought your last console switch over you know you have a problem. It's the lack of quality games, a weird marketing campign (the commercials have little to do with games they just show them for a few seconds), and the other things. I doubt sony has many tricks up it's sleeve if they did I'm sure they would of used them already. Does sony need to win this generation? The answer is no. But I expect them to have very low system sales compared to the other consoles. Why well whenever the new consoles come out Sony will claim that the ps3 is in it's prime. However the masses always want the new toy to play with.

    Who gives a crap who (Or what) the Wii's target audience is, it smashed the 360 and PS3 in terms of sales. Say what you like about the console, by the gap it won by it's obviously doing something right. In fact to further that point the Wii has about as much power as the Gamecube did (A last gen console) with sub-par graphics, a gamble of a control system and less than 10 (Correct me if I'm wrong on this) hardcore(ish) games and yet it completely dominated the competition? For all the haters hating on it, consider what would of happened if it also had the same power as say the 360 with a large hardcore library as well as what it currently has?
    Nintendo beat Sony and MS with a last-gen console with a pile of shit games =/ Either Nitendo really are the lords of teh gaming industry or MS and Sony really need to get their acts together.

      no, MS does have its shit together with the 360. they have hands down the best library out of the 3 of them. its just that MOST ppl are not gamers, and the Wii was designed to target them. while Nintendo is a great gaming company, they only reason they are selling more is because this time they figured out the trick, which is making something that targets NON GAMERS, rather than doing what Sony and MS continue to do which is target a specific niche of ppl who are already gamers. it doesnt take a genius to figure out that non-gamers far outweigh hardcore gamers like us.

      Ironic how Wii atm as nothing on the PS3 in 2009 at least nothing released. The PS3 has some major killer games coming. Tbh until I know more of what Wii and 360 is going to get I can 09 is definitely PS3 year with outstanding games. Just because they don't fit to your taste, doesn't mean the PS3 has shit this year(09). Stating stuff like that further proves you're just a Ninty fanboy bashing other systems.

    Considering TMNT is being made by the creators of Smash Bros and ninja gaiden. No body I know dislikes both of those. I highly doubt it will be shit. Red Steel 2 has motion plus so you can't automatically assume it will dissapoint like the first one. The Naruto games are actually good plays when you have friends over and I'm not a fan of the anime. So besides for the fake games or non confirmed and Snowboard Kids that is actually a good list.
    Actually research and play the games before sounding like an asshole. And linknerd don't make up games.

    just so you guys know, there is no confirmed new Zelda or Mario title for Wii at this point in time. so that dimishes the list considerably.

    however, there is "Mario Power Tennis" scheduled for March 9.

    Sony has a lot of great games coming out. So does the 360 and so does the Wii. Give it a rest . . . just because you don't like a title doesn't mean it's not a good game or that it won't sell well because others may very well like it! I personally don't like the FF series. Does that mean those games are crap? A lot of people complained about the Sonic the Hedgehog game released a while back, but I loved the game despite it's glitches and nearly unbearable load times.

          Yes, he called linkerd's list "shit"; this isn't to say that he said "all Wii games are shit", however. He never implied that the Wii was bad... just those games listed. Not even all those games listed, in fact.

          And while he did say that, he's also right in saying that that is exactly what starts a flame war. I, of all people, would know.
