Gaming Target examines sales data, dwindling developer support and the poor record of the PSP to show why 2008 was not the "Year of the PlayStation 3" and why 2009 won't be either.

The PS3 is most assuredly done and all they can do now is plan for the PlayStation 4. Hopefully they learn their lesson from this generation and do not make the same mistakes again. Healthy competition pushes everyone to new heights in the game industry and I'd love to see Sony return to the innovative and smart Sony we saw that nurtured the PS2 to its lofty peak as one of the greatest game consoles on all time.

Can't take this article seriously or think it is very credible when they make a typo like "one of the greatest game consoles ON all time".

This article is stupid. The PS3 has just been unleashed.

LBP has actually been selling pretty well, so that's a moot point on the author's part. 1.3 million copies sold since October? That's not bad at all. The hardware sales numbers released by Japan weren't looking shabby either, considering the PS3 sold over one million units.

The games the "writer" listed weren't very good to begin with [C&C 3, Beautiful Katamari, FEAR Files, etc.] and wouldn't have had that much of a sales effect on the PS3. I just can't agree with the article. I wonder if he even owns a PS3?

Well considering PS3 sold most consoles in Europe. You know what, these articles are comeing up more and more, this isn't official is it, some 360 fan-boy/girl probably made this.

This story smells like a ploy to enrage fanboys and drive traffic to the site. Jeers to the author. It will be funny, to look at these articles a year or so from now now that the PS3 is, as Punksk9er said, just now being unleashed.

When Uncharted 2 drops, and we get to see the PS3 processor actually used to greater potential than any other title to date, I believe many naysayers and so called analysts will eat their words.

Honestly, as much as analysts and industry experts like to criticize Sony, they're looking at the entire corporation from an educated perspective, in the context of a global economy.

This, however.... WHO keeps coming with this shit?

Oh, right, sites I have never heard of.

      Daigoji_Gai Jan 13, 09
But when you look at the entire corporation, especially in the context of the current economy, doesn't SONY's other verticles more than compensate for what analysts claim is a money hole for Sony? I mean from Sony Pictures, to their consumer electronics, I would expect SONY to be able to ride the PS3's lack of ROI for some time?!?!

        RabidChinaGirl Jan 13, 09
The problem here is that while the PlayStation 3 isn't compensating for its own losses, Sony's last financial report showed that every single department EXCEPT Pictures (movies) and video games (hardware + software) was losing money. Okay, so they're a long way from the gutters, but analysts are having a field day with the company's overall decline. The bad press started way before the economy crisis and wasn't even revolved around the PS3 until recently.

Most of these no-name blog sites don't even know this, or don't care, and are just basing their anti-PS3 claims on half-assed game sale statistics cited during fanboy fights. And personal preference.

Sony won't ever shut down. Their products are so widespread and respected and well-known; I understand they're in a tough financial situation, and are facing some losses, but I feel that they're too resilient to just shut down.

How else do you think the little indie sites keep running? They just post provocative BS like this to equate into more users accessing the site.

In other words, ditto to Absolute.

Agreed, though I miss the days when the riling up of teh internetz was subtle, when people enraged fanboys without simply shouting out 'PS3 is teh sux, Nintendo pwnz, lololol'

It's kind of like how criminals used to have honor and respect but now are mostly retards. Still, I suppose it will make fanboyism more monotonous and eventually fanboys might get bored and just stop because it's happening so often, so I won't complain too much.

    Shiny Mew Jan 12, 09
Yeah, I hate it when there is no official source, or a fanboy doesn't have a reason to back-up why something will happen to a console or why a consoles better, they must be retards.

    Krunal Jan 12, 09
I refuse to rate the article on the grounds that it's bullshit. I enjoyed my PS3 the most last year as have many of my friends so I definitely don't see how it can be "done for". Also Further Proof? Where's the initial proof?
  • 1
    Mr Gray Jan 13, 09
Biased piece of crap article headline is a biased piece of crap.

    And what Krunal said. ^

PS3's are turning a profit now. What does that tell you? They haven't stopped selling, and things are snowballing, as they have been if you look at the records. Slow, but steady, and don't discount the PS2's sales still moving forward, and whatever the PSP can muster (thanks a lot, hacker community).

Believe me, any Xbox fanboys out there are idiots if they think the PS3/Sony going down is going to benefit them. Once that market dries out, Micro' will readily stop dishing out money for exclusive content, and game quality will drop severely. Without the competition (that's bitched slapped it plenty of times before), the Xbox is thrown under the bus to PC, which will soon have easier blu-ray drive support as manufacturing costs dwindle.

    1. There never was any initial proof that the PS3 is done. In fact, there's more than enough perfectly credable proof that the PS3 is in all ways ready to take the gaming market by storm.

    2. There is also no credable or believable proof to be seen within this article. I can't understand why people would even think so much as to even approve this article.

Anyone else tired of the PS3 dead, isn't dead articles? I rather watch my screen refresh.

Truth be told, that was one of the worst, misinformed articles I've ever read. I sincerely hope that it was nothing other than a ploy to attract traffic to their near abandoned site.

John Scalzo has just now been included in 2 the videogame's dumbass hall of fame joining jack tompson and Uwe Boll.

How can you have a "ps3 is dead" article and on the side have a "What's your most wanted game of 2009?" poll with God of War 3 with twice as many votes as any other game on the list?

    HisServant77 Jan 13, 09
Oh no! It's the end of the world as Playstation 3 is doomed! DOOMED I tell ya!!

Seriously . . . don't people get tired of attacking the PS3 and Sony as a company? Fair warning, Sony is into some serious stuff and they're a big company. Don't make them angry by constantly attacking them . . . you'll end up pushing them to Armageddon as they build a sophisticated PS4 or PS5 that eventually takes over the world and truly ends all humanity!!

Well, maybe this is true, if you go on the offensive side, there is nothing you can really do.

But then again the PS3 and Wii are getting some really good titles for 2009.

2008 was a pretty weak year for exclusives, each console had their fair share of big titles, some lived up and some didn't, but this year is most certainly the year of the Playstation 3.

With so many exclusives they can almost release two a month for the next 12 months and still have a few games in reserve for 2010. While developer surport is also rallying up in Sony's favour, this month of course seeing one of the first games to ship that uses the Playstation 3 as the lead platform rather than getting a really shoddy port. That game is of course EA Black Box "Skate 2".

This year will no doubt make or break all three consoles, the Xbox 360 has to prove it has still got the power to compete after 3 years, the Wii has to show that it has more than shovelware and the Playstation 3 has to just keep doing what it is doing.

Out of all 3 Sony has the strongest line up of games and developer support and with a whole year to perfect Home this could be a bright new future for a console no one should have ever doubted.

He's referring to times in the past when you've said you hate the PS3 and the many times you've been against it in ways similar to this, not just because of your present 'doubts'.

      Just saying.

At least the PS3 isn't a horrific gimmick with a crap load of Shovelware and low attachment rate. Own up and admit you're a ninty fanboy. Cause even if you don't, we'll know it based off your comments.
