Electronic Theatre reports on two Bills currently in contention at US Congress to become law aiming to protect the rights of journalists - but what exactly is a "journalist" in this modern age?

While videogames are rarely a cause of national or international political concern (beyond their tendency to attract publicity over in-game themes and ill-informed marketing stunts), a Federal Shield Bill in contention to become law in the US may well create a divide between the professional Journalist and casual/part-time writer.

Hrmmm interesting. It's going to be pretty tough to make one firm line that divides people into either bloggers or journos.

If they get paid they're a journalist.
    If they don't, they're a blogger.

I thought the difference was obvious

^ What she said. Journalism is a Paid job. Blogging is a hobby at best

Blogging has become a popular form of reporting for many journalists nowadays, even those working for major publications. c:

That's why people are getting dumber -- we're abandoning traditional forms of media, and traditional standards of writing with it. Just my two cents.

I disagree. I think it's great for people to be able to express their opinions on the internet for free, and in a way, it makes people see a lot more different angels of issues.

          Tee hee.

Yeah, I'm just venting a little. Everything coin has two sides, and all that. Not saying blogs are the downfall of society or anything.

"As" shouldn't be in this headline. Had to say that, it's driving me mad.

Some bloggers get paid. Try again.

They'd consider themselves 'journalists' though. Even if they write blogs for a living, they're still a journalist because they get paid for it.

journalism: "the occupation of reporting, writing, editing, photographing, or broadcasting news or of conducting any news organization as a business".

blogging: "To write entries in, add material to, or maintain a weblog."

        Newspaper/magazine = not weblog.
        Newspaper/magazine articles = not entries.

Not all bloggers are journalists. If I write a blog about something in the world, it doesn't mean I'm a journalist. I'm just expressing my opinion about something/what I did today.
