Despite the wishes of at least a minority of fans (in the age of dying literature, bla bla bla), lead developer Jonathan Knight at newly-renamed Visercal Games says they're not trying to do anything innovative with Dante's Inferno, really. Rather, it's more important to them to remain within the confines of the "action adventure fighting genre" and deliver a great game that way.

Joy.

"I’d say we’re working pretty squarely in this action adventure fighting genre,” said Knight.

“It’s a great genre, we love the genre, and it’s more important to us to deliver a great game in that established genre than it is to particularly branch out and try too many new things."

So...does this mean they aren't staying true to the poem, or they aren't trying to make this game stand of from the rest with its combat techniques?

      quote
“The combination of the cross power that has range to it and the scythe for heavy melee, I would say, is giving us more of a Devil May Cry, Japanese feel… We’re working squarely in that genre.”
      Both.

Yeah they've been getting a lot of flak from hardcore literary fans about this game not sticking to the 'script' so-to-speak. I bet they're rethinking the name right about now.

See, gamers aren't the only fans that are complete raving lunatics!! LMAO

I'm pretty sure the literary fans beat us when the Crusades came about.

I'd have no problem with this game and might even be interested to some degree if they didn't say it was based on the poem (and accordingly, changed the name). It has basically nothing to do with it. They could change a few things to make the connections more loose and it'd be just another game about Hell and demons and such.

It has the 9 levels of Hell and each level is based off the supposed description in the book. That's all they really need for a Dante's Inferno game.

I'm a huge fan of the poem but it doesn't really bother me. All I care about is they stay somewhat true to the Circles and what dwells there.
