Video game publisher Electronic Arts today announced that the first week sales for its recently released PC/Mac title The Sims 3 totaled 1.4 million units. This is the strongest PC game launch in EA's history.

The Sims 3 has received favorable reviews and impressions, and features a much more basic form of DRM in the form of a simple disc check.

The Sims 3, the latest in Electronic Arts' blockbuster life simulation franchise, has exceeded 1.4 million PC and Mac sales in its first week on shelves, the publisher said today.

According to EA, that figure represents the strongest PC game launch the company has ever had. The game was developed by the Sims team out of Electronic Arts' Redwood Shores headquarters.

it's still being pirated pretty widely. it's just that people that dont even play video games play the sims, and those numbers more than make up for the piracy.

        Aye.
Still, hopefully they'll take this as a sign they can afford to scrap the DRM for at least most of their titles from now on..they're doing it with Dragon Age..we'll see how the numbers for that are for a better idea, I guess.

and its really not that big of a leap from Sims 2. im kinda disappointed with it. graphics are better and you can customize everything, thats basically it. it really sucks that they dont have all the special exclusive stuff that was part of all the numerous expansion packs for Sims 2 built in from the get go in Sims 3, but i guess that way EA can make more money.

Disagree on that's all that's different, for sure. It's not as big a leap as the first game was to the second, probably, but I still really think it's well worth the purchase as it's a very finely made game.

The expansions/DLC thing is awful, though, yes..I won't be buying any of that..though the new community features are great..tons of free stuff there.

i didnt literally mean that was the only different things but it seems like it. its not as drastic as from Sims 1 to 2 for sure. im glad for the free stuff in the community and the things you can buy from EA (especially since they give you 1000 free points), but there isnt much yet so i havent gotten anything other than the free town and the free Toyota Prius!

i just think its really lame that there is a serious lack of interesting activities for them to do that doesnt get old after 5 minutes, and i was hoping that there would be some types of expansion pack type things loaded into the game this time around, like pets for example. pets are STILL not a standard feature which is just unbelievably stupid IMO. perhaps i was expecting too much.

Haha, oh yeah -- how did you get the free stuff? I was told I would get a bunch of crap with my pre-order but didn't. The free $10 is nice, too -- I forgot about that. I won't be using any of it though cause I don't want the EADM spying on me.

Yeah perhaps. Well, on the same note, you have to admit it's a huge game unto itself. Well, I think so anyway.
But definitely Sims 2 expansions were serious overkill -- I hope they don't go so far this time. DLC makes more sense..they don't look like whores so much..at least not to me. Hehe.

go to the Sims 3 store at the website and the main page of that there should be an ad that says click here for a free town and another with a pic of a Prius.

and if you got the collectors edition you will have a code for a free European design sports car that you can download too.

Kudos EA. You deserve the sales for the quality games you have released/plan to release.

As long as the expansions are good, there's no need to complain.

The thing is they aren't very good. Sims 2 was better than the original Sims in terms of this, but adding a 100 extra items, many which do the same thing as past items, along with some small obsecure feature (like throw a party, go on a vacation) is not worth $50

Expansions aren't $50. I usually get them for around $20.
