Speaking to The Times, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick yet again expressed his desire for Sony to cut the price of the PlayStation 3 console, but this time went one step further. Kotick threatened that the publisher, the largest third party video game company, may have to pull its support for both Sony platforms, the PS3 and PSP, if a price cut for the PS3 doesn't happen and sales continue to lag.

Said Kotick:

quote Bobby Kotick, Activison Blizzard CEO

"I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation."

quote Bobby Kotick, Activison Blizzard CEO

"They have to cut the price, because if you don't, the attach rates are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony. When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console -- and the PSP too."

Bobby Kotick and a partner bought the once-struggling Activision for $440,000 in 1991, at a time when it was losing $30 million on $10 million in revenues. Now the world's biggest independent computer games company, it has a market value of $16 billion (£10 billion) and operating profits of $179 million in the first quarter on sales of $981 million.

Activision overtook Electronic Arts last July when it was in effect taken over by Vivendi of France in a deal where Vivendi injected World of Warcraft into the company for a 56 per cent stake. With such success, Mr Kotick, who runs the business from Beverly Hills, can probably get away with saying anything, which, soon enough, he does.

The target is Sony, the once-dominant hardware maker. “I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform. It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation,” he says.

I'm not the one to care about a price drop ( I have one already), but this may potentially hurt Sony. They really should have a price drop if Activision's support is at stake.

They better not say such things in public.
What if the PS3 and PSP regain a lot of momentum after a PS3-pricecut and with the new PSP Go ? And Sony decided not to give publish-license to Activision to benefit other (more) loyal parties with comparable games ?

Anyway, it's better to negotiate with Sony on the issue than to publish this stuff on the internet.

Nah it would never happen. There both too valuable to each other to just cut support. Of course they can favour other companies. But they will never just stop supporting each other.

Sony needs Activision more than Activision needs Sony. There are plenty of systems to put Call of Duty and etc on... but there is only one publisher that is cranking out the Guitar Hero games a million times a year.

(Note: Activision is the devil, however, no one can deny their games sell like a mo-fo)

It's a bitch but it's true. I know how a price-cut can and will benefit them (Activision, that is) but I honestly can't see why it's such a big loss to them if one isn't made. They're making enough from it, even if they just consider it side/spending money, and to stop altogether wouldn't be wise on their part... don't get me wrong, they'll survive without Sony, but they'd still make that much less. Unless if I'm totally missing something xD

I wouldn't be surprised if this is just a publicity thing they're doing to try and get Msoft to come sniffing, lol. Kotick has read the forums and seen how MS are evil and buy out everything and he wants a piece of the action! Haha

If they were making enough from PS3, then I don't think Kotick would be making any statements like this.

Also, kind of amusing how a lot of commenters are completely forgetting about the number 1 selling system, the Wii. No way Activision would cut out the Wii from it's profits to work with 360 exclusively. Activision is one of the few third party publishers that is able to make money off the Wii. Even large companies like Capcom treat the Wii as a step child because they can't figure the system out (Resident Evil on rail shooters, Dead Rising Wii, lack of Zack & Wiki love).

I know that. But I just can't imagine how they wouldn't be. Pretty much every Activision game I know of (feel free to prove me wrong, since I may be) of this generation that's been on the PS3 has been multiplat. It doesn't cost all too much to port it and I'm sure they have people who specialise in that area. So if they just make their games on 360 and then port straight to PS3 (it would come out a little later but at least it would come out) it would be easy, they'd still make that bit of profit and, when the PS3 is making a more desirable sum of deniro, they can get back to proper supporting.

That's what's confusing me though. I can't see how they would be making that little to actually consider breaking any and all ties with Sony. It's just wierd

Honestly, i'm in disbelief that they are making that little as well. I really think Kotick is bluffing.. but, I think we have to assume the CEO of one of the biggest publishers is not talking out his ass.

I can see his side however, think about if Activision was able to set aside thinking about multiplatform, and instead focus completely on the 360 for *insert game name here*. Would it not be better because they would be able to exploit technology only found in the 360.

This works vice versa too, those developers that do just PS3 games, have the best looking PS3 games on the system. This is one of the reasons I like games that are exclusive to a system, it is soooo much better than multiplatform games because of the devs figuring out the best way to use whatever system they work on (whether it is the 360's larger amount of ram or the PS3's cell capabilities that still haven't been fully used imo).

          Hideo1 Jun 20, 09
Yeah... but then they can just have a number of 360 exclusive games instead of slaughtering all ties with Sony, lol.

I can see what you mean though. I just can't see Msoft or Ninty going for it, since they're milking Activision for all they're worth as it is anyway and something like this could break that status quo.

Uh, yeah, so now the devs are complaining about the price of the PS3? Sheesh, people. As much as I like Activision this puts a huge shadow over them for me. So they want Sony to lose money so that they can gain more money? Seriously, grow up.

I know, I know I just get so tired of hearing "PS3 Price Cut!"

Understandable. I think the idea is if you say it enough, eventually it will come true, haha.

Damn if Activision do actually decide to stop supporting Sony then that would mean no Call of Duty, Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk.

I know the last 2 aren't that bad of a loss but Call of Duty would be a HUGE loss.

    Existence Jun 19, 09
Yeah, like they're going to stop supporting Sony. Its install base might not be as large as the 360, but they still get a chunk of their revenue from the ps3.

      Mr Gray Jun 19, 09
The punkass is bullshitting. Activision makes tons of money off its multiplatform titles. Their profit outweighs by far, the dev cost of the PS3 and PSP. The fact that this a-hole mentions cutting the PSPs support as well is hint to that.

HEY ACTIVISION! WHY DONT YOU FOCUS ON MAKING SOUND EFFECTS THAT ARENT RECORDED WITH SUBMERGED MICROPHONES!? (Or are you going to sue AKG for not making water-friendly mics?)
  • 1
    Daweii Jun 19, 09
Not really a huge loss... I mean have Activision actually made a good game in the last 8 years?

      RKRigney Jun 19, 09
Cough... seriously? Modern Warfare 2, buddy.

It's certainly a game the PS3 can't afford to lose, so drop the attitude.

Gotta love the attitude that Activision is like some no name publisher that has games no one buys lol

Good luck with that Activision. Cutting off 2 systems because you dont agree with THEIR pricing of THEIR system is going to cost a lot of people some jobs.

Are they still hung up on lagging sales? Last I checked, PS3 sales were pretty decent.

I smell a huge MS buyout going on.

      HisServant77 Jun 19, 09
You know . . . I hadn't though about that, but it could be that way! On one hand they could be having some MS buyout thing going on and are going to use the PS3 price cut as an excuse to leave the PS.

      Darknet* Jun 19, 09
You would bring MS in to this, Red 9. You would...

Just sounds like Activision (AKA, the new EA) are being too high and mighty for their own good.

        FinalFantasyFanaticc Jun 19, 09
Tbh with you i highly doubt that it's anything to do with MS at all, because if it actually was, then they'd be moaning about the Wii as well because no doubt if MS did buy Activision then they would be making Call of Duty and the rest 360 exclusives.

Seriously have some common business sense here =|

          PacoDG Jun 20, 09
hahaha.. ah, the Sony Defense Force. MS buyout?! .. haha... like Activision would give up the Wii/DS money to go MS only?! hahahhahaha.. riiiight.

LOL! MS buys Activision? I'm sorry but you are literally an idiot for thinking such a thing. No seriously, you have a low IQ.

I think Darknet replied to the wrong post down here, lol. Who was that too, btw? 'cause if it was meant at me I hope you know I was joking. Thought I made that obvious enough xD

    Bale Fire Jun 19, 09
Umm why would they have to stop supporting the PSP because they don't price cut the PS3? Sounds more like a childish threat than good businuss sense.
  • 3
    kik36 Jun 19, 09
Well making threats like that definitely won't help Sony sell more consoles, will it? LMFAO

Activision are a bunch of real douchebags. Not just because of this, but largely because of their suing the Brutal Legend guys.
    • 1
      BANDITO ATTACK Jun 20, 09
they're not suing the brutal legend guys, they're just trying to re-obtain the rights to it's publishing (so they can sell it of course). vivendi's just kinda caught in the middle.

and brutal legend > guitar hero
      i can't wait.

    Metallica Jun 21, 09
Activision doing this won't solve shit, people still buy your games you make/publish for the Playstation 3 console so stop being arseholes!
