Electronic Theatre reports on the poor sales of Sony published PLAYSTATION 3 releases in North America, with Resistance: Fall of Man being the only first-party title to surpass 1m sales.

It’s been reported today that Sony are having difficulty making million sellers out of their first-party PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) releases in North America. Since the PS3’s North American launch in late November 2006, only Insomniac’s launch title Resistance: Fall of Man has managed to surpass one million unit sales in the territory.

Well, Playstation has always been more popular in Europe and in Japan than in the US. Still not especially good for Sony, but not necessarily a sign of doom for the PS3 either.

Well, I can't argue, Resistance: Fall of Man was a excellent game.

I thought MGS4 achieved at LEAST 1M sales in America.

I guess it just goes to show how close-minded some people are in NA; when excellent titles like MGS4 don't get the consumer appreciation here that they deserve...

I haven't seen total numbers, but as of July 18 last year (one month after release), it sold 774,600 copies in the US, and nearly one million including the bundle (link).

In any case, Konami is second party, no?
I think it's more a case of the PS3 being not as widely adopted at this point as the PS2 was -- though 2 sold seven million, 3 sold four million, and 4 has sold three million. Hmmm. Course "Snake Eater" wasn't the most appealing title..then again everyone hated Raiden. I have no idea.

Well what first party exclusives are there so far?

Also...NO console will ever be as widely adopted as the PS2.

Just first-party games, not necessarily exclusives, though I guess they generally are.

Far as I can tell, the only notable ones (as in, ones actually likely to have surpassed 1m) are inFamous, Killzone 2 and Uncharted -- upcoming ones include Heavy Rain, GT5, The Last Guardian, Uncharted 2, God of War III.

I wouldn't say never -- it was quite a feat but gaming is always growing.

Konami is a third party company.

        For Sony's first party software:

inFamous (as of May 2009 NPD): 175.9k in US
As of April 2009 NPD data:

          inFamous isn't 1st party. It's 2nd/3rd party.

Well, to be honest I feel as though this is mostly due to how bad people talk about Sony and the PS3 this generation. It's like the PS3 and it's games are some sort of plague (with few exceptions) or something. At least, that's what I feel when I hear people talk around me.

Really there never was a real good reason for the hate train the PS3 has mustered over the years. Sure it had a slow start, but some people regard it as if it's one of the stupidest things ever built in the history of man.

In reality, right now it's probably one of the best entertainment investments you can make, regardless of first party sales.

When you compare the 360 and PS3 in Europe and Japan it balances out.

Didn't know sales were quite that low however, I guess the majority of the US just don't like Uncharted, Killzone and Motorstorm.

I think Drake 's fortune is already a million seller in North America , and motor Storm is over 1.5 million(bundles included)

PS: Resistance has only sold 1.4 million(bundles included)

NPD doesn't count software bundled with hardware in their software counts.

I've noticed a few people aren't sure between first-, second- and third-party, so I thought I'd pop up a basic definition:

First-Party: Applies when a title is published and funded by the console manufacturer.

Second-Party: Applies when a game is published by a console manufacturer but not funded.

Third-Party: Applies when a game is funded and published by an entirely external source, i.e. Activision, EA etc.

Second-party is like Atari publishing Namco's Tekken 6 in Europe. They didn't have anything to do with the game, they're just sticking their name on it and putting it on shop shelves. As far as I'm aware (in the UK at least) ALL Sony published games on PS3 thus far are First-Party - they've helped fund development of them all to at least some degree.

Sorry, just realised that a better example of second-party would be Sony publishing Final Fantasy and Tekken games on PS2, but couldn't find the "edit" option!

It's that paper icon with a pencil at the bottom.

Also, Atari publishing Tekken 6 is still third-party, because Atari doesn't make the hardware it's playing on.

          Thanks Akira_EX.

And yeah, I realised that after I hit "Post comment", that's why I was looking for the edit button!
