Released this past Saturday, one of the biggest games of the year, Square Enix's RPG Dragon Quest IX: Hoshizora no Mamoribito for the Nintendo DS has launched to great fanfare and dubious trolling. With the game's two million preorders in mind, sales tracker and Famitsu publisher Enterbrain has revealed that Dragon Quest IX has sold 2,343,440 units in its first two days on the market in Japan.

Comparatively, Dragon Quest VIII for the PlayStation 2 opened to launch week sales of 2,223,700 units for a similar timeframe. The largest Japanese launch week total is 2,504,044 units for Final Fantasy VIII on the PlayStation, but that was on a regular four-day launch week. This launch bests Pokémon Diamond and Pearl's launch week of 1,586,360.
