Sony soon announced they were going to become equal with Microsoft soon after the launches on the PS3slim and the PSPgo, believing they would then be on par with the Xbox360.
GAMESCOM’09: SCEE boss Andrew House talks up fight with Xbox 360
PlayStation platform holder Sony is in bullish mood ahead of the upcoming launches of both PS3 Slim and PSPgo, believing that its two new machines have given it the footing it needs to square up to the challenge posed by Microsoft’s Xbox 360.
“We've competing very seriously, head-to-head, with Microsoft in Europe right now – and this gives us a major opportunity to do that more aggressively,” House told MCV at Gamescom.
“We have very high hopes for the new PS3 and think it will deliver a significant increase in our sales.”
House stopped short of making any 'further bold predictions' saying “it's a little dangerous to make statements like that given the seasonality of our industry and the current climate”, but admitted Sony is quietly confident about its offer in Q3 and Q4.

But if you're talking about the competition, I'd say Sony has definitely improved their standing with Gamescom and the several exclusive games coming out soon, especially with the price cut. Whether they've caught up to Microsoft, however, remains to be seen.
Smart.
You've got to admire the pessimism.
Not a chance, their not even scraping MS's monthly sales atm and they can't really include the PSPgo in sales against MS. Why? BECAUSE MS ISN'T IN THE GODDAMN HANDHELD MARKET.
25char;;
and id want to put in my own HDD in my PS3 anyway, and i dont know if the Slim allows you to do that.
Surely the Wii will get wrecked by the PS/XB then?
None have PS3/360. Nintendo really are far ahead in the money grabbing race.
