Sony soon announced they were going to become equal with Microsoft soon after the launches on the PS3slim and the PSPgo, believing they would then be on par with the Xbox360.

GAMESCOM’09: SCEE boss Andrew House talks up fight with Xbox 360

PlayStation platform holder Sony is in bullish mood ahead of the upcoming launches of both PS3 Slim and PSPgo, believing that its two new machines have given it the footing it needs to square up to the challenge posed by Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

“We've competing very seriously, head-to-head, with Microsoft in Europe right now – and this gives us a major opportunity to do that more aggressively,” House told MCV at Gamescom.

“We have very high hopes for the new PS3 and think it will deliver a significant increase in our sales.”

House stopped short of making any 'further bold predictions' saying “it's a little dangerous to make statements like that given the seasonality of our industry and the current climate”, but admitted Sony is quietly confident about its offer in Q3 and Q4.

Good grief, do they have any idea how much flaming this single statement is going to generate all over the net?

But if you're talking about the competition, I'd say Sony has definitely improved their standing with Gamescom and the several exclusive games coming out soon, especially with the price cut. Whether they've caught up to Microsoft, however, remains to be seen.

I can see Sony becoming very unpopular in the upcoming months with all this controversy aout which compant is more popular. Even with the PSPgo and PS3slim, MS are bringing out a 360 handheld which it sure to draw in more people to buying a MS product.

I actually didn't know a 360 handheld has been confirmed.

Umm unpopular for boasting that with a year headstart on Xbox 360's side the Playstation 3 is catching up.. Personally if I was in a company that started a year later than another and is catching i'd be pretty damn happy. Just think about it this way Sony know the pre-order data, they know the predicted sales data for the PS3 Slim... This boasting could be on the heels that they know forewell that worldwide their sales come release of the Slim have infact levelled off or even overtaken the Xbox 360. Not saying this as an irrational statement but there are millions upon millions that want a PS3 that didn't get one because of the price. Now they have a cheaper console, a smaller console and one that many are stating is better than the original. Now why wouldn't every single PS2 owner of which there were 130 million want to buy one now?

Microsoft never announced an xbox portable. They said they'd rather spend more time working on the console version. Besides Nintendo already won with the DS, microsoft will do better if they waited until the next round of portables shows up.

Flame me now! I can see this statement becoming reality. People around the world consider Microsoft to be the DEVIL "lol". This might put the PS3 in a price point they have been waiting for. Only time will tell.

Hang on - so before, they didn't think they were good enough? And now, with 3 consoles instead of one, they think they might just beat Microsoft?

You've got to admire the pessimism.

So Sony want to say that because their releasing a slimmer and uglier version of the PS3 they'll catch up to MS in sales?

Not a chance, their not even scraping MS's monthly sales atm and they can't really include the PSPgo in sales against MS. Why? BECAUSE MS ISN'T IN THE GODDAMN HANDHELD MARKET.

This actually reminded me of the article about 'PS3 is beating Microsoft by far', but they included the PS2 and PSP as well.

technically Nintendo is wrecking sony. And they would have done the same to Microsoft. Nintendo is currently unbeatable in the handhelds.

Nintendo are unbeatlable in all of their fields. No one can compete or get anywhere near them.

yeah which is why MS is holding out on a portable Xbox, cause its really risky to try because they know Nintendo will shit all over them. they are not afraid of the PSP, they would actually have a chance against just the PSP but with the DS, no chance.

No their saying they will catch up to MS in sales because their releasing a slimmer, uglier, and CHEAPER version of the PS3. Any1 who thinks that its not going to at the very least close the gap is either irrational or a fanboy.

If Sony thinks a slightly more cheaper and small PS3 will help them then I'm sure they got everything planned. But holy shit isn't it enough already? PSP-3000 is still considered new in ways. A PSPgo is coming out next year, a new PS3 Slim...they want people to blow money out of their asses just to beat Microsoft? The economy sucks for us all. Can't they wait maybe another year from now? Whats next PS3 Slim in Blue?

i never heard of the PS3 slim being cheaper, i thought it was $300 right? isnt that the same price that regular PS3s are dropping down to also? so the Slim really isnt any cheaper, now is it? in that case, there goes their logic of the slim causing them to catch up to 360 in sales. i really dont think the Slim will be this amazingly selling PS3 like they believe it will be, im sure it will sell quite a bit at least around Christmas, but the 360 Elite is going to be $300 also, so customers arent going to just flock to the PS3 Slim like its the Holy Grail, they will have to think about it whether to get that or a 360 Elite.

and id want to put in my own HDD in my PS3 anyway, and i dont know if the Slim allows you to do that.

I believe the Slim is $250, and the 40GB is $300. Or maybe I have them mixed up.

Many places in the US were selling the PS3 for a US $399 now they are selling the Slim for a US $299.. The console price was cut by $100 and with Microsoft phasing out the Pro in favour of the Elite it will mean both Sony and Microsoft have a 120Gb system at the exact same price point.

Who needs the Wii when 360 and PS3 are doing no contoller and motino control?

Surely the Wii will get wrecked by the PS/XB then?
    • 1
Star of Spurs Aug 23, 09
No. The sheer amount of people that own a Wii or the people that will own a Wii is growing more and more. The PS3's and 360's are mainly for gamers - the Wii is a casual audience gimmick, and one that won't go away any time soon.

Yeah see where you're coming from. 10 people live on my road. 7 of them have Wii's.

None have PS3/360. Nintendo really are far ahead in the money grabbing race.
