Game development has sky rocketed since the launch of the current generation. Developers are finding it hard to break even. EA has spoken saying that game needs to sell about 1.1 million copies, just to break even. EA also said that because of of Microsoft and Sony trying to push the current consoles, they have exhausted themselves. Because of that we will be seeing the PS3.5 before the PS4 and the Xbox560 before the Xbox720

Are the consoles in decline? Hilleman acknowledged it has been a struggle for the past two years. He said that Sony and Microsoft nearly expired crossing the finish line as they launched their consoles and probably don’t want to launch new ones anytime soon.

“I expected we’ll see a PlayStation 3.5 before we see a PlayStation 4 and an Xbox 560 before we see an Xbox 720,” he said. “The biggest shift is how fast packaged goods games are changing and going away.”

He noted that with the iPhone, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable, mobile game platforms now outnumber console platforms by two to one.

You know, it HAS seemed like the competition between the two has been more heated this gen. I blame the gaming communities infamous fanboys that have increased in number and grown more vicious and ignorant than times past.

      Can I quote Yahtzee?

'The only reason people take part in console wars is because they're little boys, and more often than not your mum will only buy you one console, and you partake in console wars because you want to defend your purchase, mainly because you feel you made the wrong one. But you argue anyway, because we all know that's more likely than you admitting fault.'

So much truth . . . almost brings a tear of happiness to my eyes at the realization that there are others out there who realize this!

I assume that the 1.1 million is in total over all regions? I'd really like to know how many games qualifies as a solid, sequel worthy success in that case.

Yeah all regions. Pretty much 1.1 million, as both dead space and mirror's edge are getting sequals. But mirror's edge 2 has a much smaller dev team now.
