Sony started off with a fumble. But after a few price drops, and new models their PS3 has picked up in sales. So far, since its launch the PS3 has sold a massive 27 million units. Quite impressive for such an expensive piece of hardware.

When Sony axed the price of the PS3 by $100 in mid-August, everyone expected PS3 sales to skyrocket - and sky rocket they did, according to Sony. In their latest financial reports, Sony has announced that they've sold 3.2 million PS3s during Q2 at the new $299 price point, while the PS3 as a whole has sold 27 million units to date worldwide. Their data suggests they also outsold the 360 worldwide during Q2, and nearly matched the Wii at 2.1 and 3.5 million units respectively.

Good going Sony. Looks like your console is starting to catch up. Now, you need to add one more console sale there later in the future cause I've yet to buy my PS3.

        The PS3 wasn't $299 until September though.

Q3 is July to Sept, and since Q3 is over, you cant count the sales the Slim is making now in with Q3, so really they are only counting September's sales.

Yup. People tend to forget just how rough the PS2's start was. Of course the numbers for each console are much closer this generation.

Does the 360 or PS3 have more sales? I'm not so sure, but i think it's the 360, since it was released a year before the PS3.

360 has quite a bit more sales than the PS3 worldwide, no doubt about it. However, comparing how each console has done from launch, PS3 is doing better.

Microsoft announced at E3 2009 that the Xbox 360 had sold 30 million units so in 4 months from E3 the Xbox 360 might be on about 33 million by now, the PS3 is now on 27 million. It's 6 million units behind a console that had a year headstart and the PS3 is now selling like hot cakes, this Christmas alone the PS3 may sell a few million units.

You know, for some reason it's just been embedded in my mind that Xbox had a HUGE lead over PS3; but when you throw those figures out there... Sony's not doing too bad. Not to mention that this year they certainly do look like they have the better Holiday lineup in comparison.

It's going to be interesting to see how it looks like late March/Early April when PS3's real heavy hitters come up (GT5, God of War 3))

Yah, it's a common misconception that there is a massive difference between the two. Really, if the 360, by estimate, only makes 3M unit sales in 4 months, and 6M in eight months, and that the PS3's new price is causing great sales, 6M unit difference between the two is actually not that big of a margin. If sales remain competitive for the PS3, I can see the two becoming neck and neck really soon.

Which is great because then the two will really need to start relying on software to compete with each other, which should make for one of the best times for gaming in a long time.
