The boss of top development company Square-Enix has claimed that the end is nigh for the game console.
Yoichi Wada, CEO of the company which brought us the likes of Final Fantasy, predicted that online distribution services could easily overtake physical game discs and cartridges, meaning there would be no need for consoles to play them on. The interview for MCV also revealed that he will carefully monitor the beta of the company's Final Fantasy XIV.
He explained that Square Enix is preparing for this change by ramping up production of social and browser games at its Japanese studios, and also closely monitoring 2010’s beta roll-out of PS3 MMO Final Fantasy XIV.

Duh
The thing about a games console is that it's easy. Buy a console and you have many years of game releases ahead of you, with the most complicated setup being plugging it in. This isn't something that's going to just disappear.
Besides, until everyone in the bloody world has 24/7 high speed internet basically for free and the system is 100% perfect with computers all linked all over the world (you know, the sci-fi future we see in like Star Trek or whatever), people will still continue to use physical disks. And even then if that comes to pass, some will still want a hard copy.
So....let's just agree he got stupid in that interview. Or drunk.
I'm pretty sure a higher up should be aware of his company's own practices and product management.
PUH-LEASE.
The day Squaresoft's people can 'call the shots' is the day we're hit by a solar flare that switches the Earth's magnetic poles, causing global devestation and Planet X to appear and subsequently finish us off with a Death Star laser while drinking its juice in the hood.
Somebody give me a screenshot of Fallout/Vegas. I need a real RPG.
Send me a screenshot of Demon Soul's 2 while you're at it. There's only one king of action RPGs.
Oh, but if i'm ever in the mood for an excess of buckles, zippers, and male castration, send me a pic of Square's latest game.
There will still probably be consoles, they just won't work nearly the same. Like he said in the article, we are now leaning towards processing via networking rather than local computing. Pretty soon, all our games will be processed using cloud computing technology and the "console" (if that's what you would still call it) would simply be there to receive and output the resulting video stream to our TVs, and to send off our input commands to the cloud network.
