Want a new generation to start soon? I sure hope not, because Naughty Dog wants this generation to last around another 5-6yrs. Why's that? Because it's good for the consumer, developer, and because they feel they have plenty left to utilize in the PS3 hardware.

When Naughty Dog launched Uncharted 2: Among Thieves in October, gamers around the world were amazed at the graphical presentation Naughty Dog was able to create. With amazing looking characters, detailed environments, and vibrant visuals, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was quickly designated as one of the best looking games of the generation. As hardware ages, developers become more accustomed to the hardware, but they also usually begin to feel some constraints. Naughty Dog doesn't feel constrained at all, though. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

With a game like what they just put out, I wonder. If they say the PS3 has a lot more under its hood, I wonder if we'll ever see its "full potential".

It's nigh impossible to ever reach full potential with any set of hardware. There's just a point of diminishing return when it's time to move on to faster hardware.

There's always a way to make coding more efficient, that's really what finding the full potential of hardware comes down to. Regardless, I'm sure we'll be seeing Naughty Dog and other developers becoming more comfortable and adept at coding for the CELL and seeing some incredible games on PS3 in the years to come.

Whatever happened to them using 100% of the PS3's power on U2? Not that I believed them anyway.

They did, however there are still ways of getting more out of that 100%. They're just trying to look for ways to do things faster and in a better way so that in the end they can create a better game. And if U2 is all 100% (Graphically) that's pretty damn good. I wouldn't mind if it couldn't get any better.

Imagine someone saying they used a BD to it's limit, using 100% of it's capacity.

However, they didn't compress anything. So therefore they can still say they can fit more if they tried.

100% is always a relative term in performance of computer hardware. It means it's being taxed to it's highest capacity with however they're currently programming for it. They could potentially program it differently, still be using "100%" of it, but ultimately have better looking visuals, more complex animations and post processing etc.

I want video games that look as graphically as good as Avatar.

    Thank you very much.

I want video-games that are fun as hell to play.

If I wanted to see visual and real graphics I'll look outside.

Well as U2 showed, you can have hella fun and amazing graphics.

Haven't played U2, so I can't comment on that, but it is a fair statement that the majority of graphic driven games are rather lackluster when it comes to the actual game part of it.

Uncharted 2 is without a doubt the best game I've played this year, from a combination of gameplay and graphics and general feel.

You'll have to wait probably 5 to 10 years at least. Gaming visuals are years behind blockbuster movies, even the pre-rendered cutscenes in games don't hold an candle to big budget movies.

Good example is Spirits Within. A financial flop, but awesome looking for its time (still is actually), and it was from 2001.

Personally I think Avatar visuals is a 20 year wait in real time. We are only just getting close to Pixar in certain games. Ignore the lesser texture fidelity and Ratchet and Clank Future 1 and 2 on the PS3 are pretty much borderline Pixar CGI. Though even then Pixar animation looks good but it is stylised, it is not realistic. Avatar on the other hand would literally be asking the console to render in real time pretty much what we see outside our window. Avatar's CGI was that photo-realistic that I believe 90% of all who saw it, could not tell what was CGI and what wasn't. Consoles won't get to that in 10 years, PC's might as you always have the overboard enthusiast that when their motherboard supports 128Gb RAM they buy 128Gb etc.. Those guys might be able to do Avatar in real time sooner, but Consoles won't.

          ... no.

Petabytes, baby. Consoles are no where near that far behind on PC's, so the gap between the two won't be anywhere near the ten years you see it.

Actually consoles are really far behind PC's.

PCS are constantly improving and are always on the go, Consoles aren't. They are the same for 5-7 years. Its absolutely impossible for a console to have better capabilities than what is to be offered 4 or 5 years into the future after its release. Heck it even gets beat a year after release.

I'm aware that consoles are far behind PCs but to say the latter are ten years ahead is ridiculous, by any standard.

He didn't, he said we will have to wait around 10 years to get it, but PC might get it earlier, which it would because it can upgrade at any time.

Give us the Mass Effects or Fables and you have yourself both Uncharteds.

We'll negotiate Conviction and MGS4 later
