TorrenFreak lists the most pirated games of 2009 with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, grabbing top spot. It has had over 4.1 million downloads within the 2 months of it's release. Other games on the list include The Sims 3, Prototype, and Need for Speed Shift.

With 4.1 million unauthorized downloads of the PC version alone, the game more than doubles the achievement of last year’s ‘winner‘ Spore. Modern Warfare 2 leads both the PC and Xbox 360 lists, by a landslide.

When I read the title I automatically knew MW2 would be the first game on this list.

I don't really know anything about torrenting games, especially ones for a console, but I figured Sims 3 would have been on there considering it's still on the PC.

Did you read the article? It is on there, hell it's even in the "new story attached to" section right here.

Now imagine if all those people just bought the games. How much better would the industry be.

Some probably did, but yeah, most probably didn't.

That's really a naive and idealistic point of view though.

For instance, have you ever seen the line at McDonalds when they have a free food promotion? 10x longer than usual.

Point is: when people can get something for free, they take advantage at an astronomical rate compared to when they have to pay for it.

Pretending that all or even a majority of them would have paid for it is just kidding yourself.

It's only natural to want to save as much money as possible, but it doesn't mean you're not an asshole.

This is why developers use DRM.

Which fails anyway. Cracks and keygens, TBH.

Like, putting stuff in a safe that isn't monitored. Once someone releases the 'code' to get in, you'll have masses of people just opening and taking it.

So in the end, DRM just mostly pisses off paying customers.

DRM is thankfully dying down, at least somewhat. Smart publishers like Ubisoft and EA seem to be realizing offering extras and online features for games is a much more effective method. Cause if you're still pirating after that, you're stupid and an asshole.
