Just last year Sony was able to drop the manufacturing cost for each PS3 so they would only lose about $37 and now they have knocked it down by almost half, dropping it to only $18. Shortly Sony will finally be making a profit on the PS3.

Sony have cut the substantial losses they have been incurring on PlayStation 3 hardware sales - the loss per console down to a manageable 18 USD.

Hardware makers Sony and Microsoft tend to sell their consoles at a loss, making up for it with software royalties. Nintendo, however, make a profit on the hardware and the software.

Ahhh, not bad, haha. I wonder if by this time next year they'll have cut it to only eight to nine dollars loss per PS3.

I think they'll probably have it cut down past 0 before next year, actually. Depends on how things go I guess.

Considering the plan for the PS4 was based on PS3 architecture build-up, then it's already paying for the cost right now. Plus with the US military putting faith into the cell processor, chances of Sony axing it in favor of a different design in the PS4 are fading fast.

        And I quote, "Woot".

I'm pretty sure it was $40 only a few months ago, so I'd say sooner than that.

I'm sure I'm missing something here but surely that means that they can't really make a profit on a PS3?
