Not sure if this is really an apology. More like a non-apology apology that you typically see with politicians and celebrities. Maybe they should have had Kevin Butler handle this. Everyone like Kevin Butler.

Sony released a statement today apologizing to Playstation 3 owners for the removal of the 'Install Other OS' option in a recent firmware update. Sony says that they removed the feature in "the best interests of the majority of users."

How about a real apology and give it back.

It's more of a "look, just stop bitching, a'ight?" than an apology.

Nice to see people still have their panties in such a *bleep*ing twist about it. Class action lawsuits? Ridiculous. Shit happens, move on.

It honestly was kinda of ridiculous that they did this though. I actually use my ps3's Linux capability a lot. So I still havn't updated. I don't know if I will either.

Yeah it was stupid, but Ninty have taken down fansites and films and stuff, Msoft think Natal will sell as much as the Wii; I think we all know that these companies occasionally... or frequently... do stupid things. We can't exactly force them to change their minds on it, all we can do is just deal with it instead of bitching ourselves into a stupor.

      "Shit happens, move on."

Or just wait on GeoHot to release his custom firmware keeping the OtherOS flag enabled. I guess there's always that option too in case people don't feel like curling in a ball until the kicking stops

At least they were decent enough to say this, even if its as much explanation as apology. To people who are saying they should give it back, if its going to prevent piracy and abuse of their product, Sony are not going to do that, and I agree with them.

Because they're evil bastards and they hate us all, right?

Hah, going a bit to far, but they could have at least left some backwards compat in there for their most popular games, instead of just removing the whole thing completely then charging for said games.

... should have made it for some of their most popular games...

That's like saying they should have made PS3 only compatible to some blu-ray discs to save space.

Don't get annoyed at businesses for making business moves.

The same hacker guy who started this anti-hack policy also stated that BC (at least the software emu type) could easily exist in any current PS3. I imagine Sony took it out to make the most out of the last run of PS2 sales. It'll likely be put back in there when they can launch PS2 game sales via PSN. Some of these PS3 game demos are larger in filesize than most PS2 games were, so selling PS2 games through PS2 would seem entirely feasible.

It's possible, of course, but it's expensive. That's why it was cut.

Yep. Takes a lot of work to code backwards compatibility for each and every game. Look how long it took MS to do it with the Xbox 360 and they ultimately gave up without getting all the Original Xbox games compatible. And the PS2 has a lot more games than the Original Xbox.

Sony has been behind the 8-ball with costs for the PS3 from the beginning. That's why they've drastically cut hardware off the PS3.

No, it's because they're evil bastards and they hate us all. Have you not been paying attention

I don't see why people care so much. I'd be as bold to say that I bet the majority of PS3 users here haven't even touched the 'install other OS' function.
