First off, hats off to Bungie and Microsoft for 3.3 million copies sold for Halo 3 (360). It beats any game by an overly large margin. Wii Play (Wii) clocks in at 282k sold, in second. 224k for The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS) is a pretty good number, considering it is first week sales.
For the hardware numbers, it is quite shocking that even with the 3.3 mil Halo 3, the 360 only manages to sell 27k more units than the Wii this month: 360's 527.8k versus Wii's 501k. The PS3 still stands low at only 119.4k. If this were a normal four-week tracking period, the PS3 would still be hovering around that 100k threshold, at that rate.
DS is less than 2:1 on the PSP in sales, but it's close. The GBA is at a valiant 75k sold.
For comparison, this is the August NPD

Comments
Those are some high sales for Halo 3, though. 3.3 million is incredible for the first month for any game, but seeing as it is Halo, I'm not surprised.
Then again, Halo 3 was only a part of this tracking period for 12 days. We'll see more definitive stuff next month.
By the way, the line "Maybe the Halo 3 hype attracted people into buying a new system" was a bit vague, I was referring to other systems besides the 360. Obviously it would sell 360s, but it seems that console sales increased for all of them.
*crack*
PlayStation 3 119.4K"
Someone's going to have to explain why people are still buying so many PS2s after all these years. Are you blowing your nose with them? Can you eat them? Power a car with them? Do they sell them for $2 and include a free sandwich?
