Media Create 11/19/07 - 11/25/07 Japanese Sales: Japan Loves Dragon Quest; Wii, PS3 Both Increase

Akira_EX | November 29, 2007 | Industry News | Playstation 2 Playstation 3
Well, this is a pretty interesting week, as we head into the home stretch of 2007 in Japan. Nine of this week's top ten are new releases, and the two main home console streams are neck-to-neck once again.

The top seller this week is the DS remake of Dragon Quest IV, selling a few short of 600k units. Next is the PS2 version of World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008, selling 294k units. Rounding out the top five are the PS3 version of World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 (PS3 - 141k), last week's #1 Mario Party DS (NDS - 110k), and Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess (PS2 - 68k).

For hardware numbers, sales for all hardware except the GBA saw increases in units sold:
This Week - Last Week: +/-
DSL: 116,694 - 76,084: +40,610
PSP: 75,027 - 65,609: +9,418
WII: 54,362 - 36,230: +18,132
PS3: 50,564 - 39,178: +11,386
PS2: 14,875 - 8,855: +6020
360: 7,117 - 6,525: +592
GBA: 85 - 262: -180
NGC: 44 - 38: +6

As we see the numbers and the number of new releases in the top ten software, we can assume the following:
The increase in DS Lite sales is mainly due to the release of Dragon Quest IV (NDS).
The increase in Wii sales is mainly due to the release of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (WII).
The increase in PS3 sales is mainly due to the release of World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 (PS3).
The Wii now slightly overtakes the PS3 this week, selling roughly 4k more, whereas both consoles are leaving the 360 in the proverbial dust. PSP sales have also increased, but the only new PSP game in the top 50 is a game called Air, published by Prototype.

Looking ahead, here are the prominent games being released this week and following couple of weeks (sources: Wikipedia and NeoGAF where available):
This Week (11/26/07 - 12/02/07):
NDS: Professor Layton and Pandora's Box
WII: Sengoku Basara 2, Wii Fit
PS3: Assassin's Creed
360: Guilty Gear 2: Overture
Next Week (12/03/07 - 12/09/07):
NDS: Tales of Innocence
WII: No More Heroes, Soul Calibur Legends
360: Lost Odyssey
Others:
NDS: Final Fantasy IV DS (12/20/07)
All these games should show possible impacts on sales figures for each console. Expect rises, people.

Notables:
Mario Party DS (NDS) is the only old release to remain in the top 10, at #4.

It was obvious that Sonic and Mario at the Olympus games will increase sales for the Wii. Interesting the Soccer game to increase both the PS2 and PS3 systems. I suspect the AC to further increase sales for PS3 in japan.
Guild Wars 2 should boost the 360 sales there as well assuming its their type of game.

Guilty Gear 2 is a fighting game that I'm pretty sure has a decent following in Japan. The only thing that hinders it is on the 360. It may push some units, but not a whole lot.

Assassin's Creed may increase PS3 sales, but seeing how Heavenly Sword did doesn't have me too excited.

      Soccer game in Japan? Sales.
