Protests, Boycotts in Wake of Gerstmann Firing

Avalith | December 03, 2007 | Industry News | Company
Gamespot chose to lie in an attempt to cover up a poor decision and now gamers across the United States are outraged. 1up.com, one of Gamespot's rival sites, organized a protest on Friday in front of Gamespot's headquarters in California. This isn't the last of the protests to come, either. A Gamespot user is calling for a "Blackout Monday," which calls for a complete boycott of all CNET sites on Monday. This means that you shouldn't Google or visit sites related to CNET in any way, shape, or form if you wish to take part in this.
While GameSpot and its parent company CNET remain mum, gamer outrage over the Jeff Gerstmann firing continues.

Employees of competing video game website 1up.com staged a demonstration on Friday outside GameSpot HQ in San Francisco. The impromptu gathering was a way of showing support for Gerstmann and the integrity of the game review process in general.

There's one thing I really wanna know about this whole firing thing, is there any solid proof that he was fired over the Kane and Lynch review?

He's officially been fired, but him being fired over the Kane and Lynch review only started as a rumour. I'd just like to know if that was the real reason or not. Does sound rather likely, and I'm not trying to defend Gamespot or anything, but I just need some real solid proof that he got fired over the review before I can really take a side.

Thats what i have been saying all this time, its just a rumor about what you said. And thats why gamespot and jeff didn't respond to it, then gamespot makes matter worse by lying.

I hope gamespot goes down in flames, i never liked the site anyway, and this controversy just proved there idiots.

CNET is yet to comment on the reasons behind the termination of his employment and likely never will, but the timing is too coincidental. It may have been the final straw if he were already in trouble over past reviews, but if that's not the case, then it's most likely that he was fired because of the review.

Everyone knows that it's not good business practice to advertise a product that your own site reviews as being mediocre as it sends mixed messages.

If they fired him just because of his thoughts on a review I think I would also join in this protest. An outrage to basically put it.
