Media Create 01/21/08 - 01/27/08 Japanese Sales: The Week Before the Storm

Akira_EX | February 01, 2008 | Industry News | Playstation 2 Playstation 3
It's not a really interesting week this time around, with this week being the week before two big games come out in Japan. As such, there is also a healthy mix of games in this top fifty that is also reflected in the top ten.

The top selling game this go around is the crtically-acclaimed nongame Wii Fit, selling 89k copies. Coming in second is World Soccer Winning Eleven: Ubiquitous Evolution 2008 for the PSP, selling 77k copies. Rounding out the top five are Lucky Star: Misasagi Sakura Gakuen Sakura Fuji Festival (PS2 - 71k), Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (NDS - 50k), and Wii Sports (WII - 26k).

On the hardware side, numbers were around the same as last week:
This Week - Last Week: +/-
DSL: 79,370 - 88,575: -9,202
PSP: 77,933 - 79,923: -1,990
WII: 74,544 - 81,638: -7,094
PS3: 34,363 - 38,117: -3,754
PS2: 11,364 - 13,539: -2,175
360: 4,296 - 4,552: -256

It's still the non-holiday slump in Japan, with the only games getting noteworthy weekly numbers being Wii Fit (WII), Winning Eleven (PSP), Lucky Star (PS2) and Mario and Sonic (NDS). Hardware-wise, it is the third week in a row with constant drops, although next week, the Wii, PS3 and 360 will probably see some green increases.

The more important week ends up being next week, with the two heavyweight releases, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Devil May Cry 4. Other games also come out that week, but none will have the impact of these two.

Pardon me for saying this, but...the 360 is just dying over there. Compared to the other gaming platforms that get sales in the thousands weekly, it gets a mere 256. Definitely a contrast to the US, where it outsells everything weekly.

Yeah cuz the Japanese are inexplicably narrow minded for some reason.

I'm glad the PS3's doing well over there, but it seems that they have literally no reasoning for leaving the 360 behind like that. I guess they're bigger fans of JRPGs than of American FPS's. But summed up as a whole, they've never clearly given a reason to disregard the 360 so much.

    I got a reason:

They're too full of themselves? Seriously, the 360 has the most JRPG gamea of Next Gen's consoles, so it's not whether they like the library of games or not, it's because it's a "Western" console and therefore should be "outcasted" as such, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hell, I think it was Ryan Payton (Kojima Productions) that mentioned that in the Tokyo Game Show, the 360's section was nearly empty as opposed to Nintendo and Sony's booths

By what I've observed, they're just being arrogant.
