Casual Gamers Predominantly Female

Mishtram | April 13, 2007 | Industry News | PC
The number of female gamers across the net continues to grow as 3/4 of the casual gaming society is dominated by them. Men still control the gamer's field overall, however, women now make up 1/3 of that industry as well.
More and more games are being released that include software which gathers demographic data about players. This data is giving marketers new insight into who is playing games, and who can be marketed to through them. According to a recent study commissioned by PopCap Games, one of the most popular casual gaming portals, casual games are being played by three times as many female gamers as male. PopCap's user base is 76% percent female and 24% male.

Other casual sites are seeing a female majority, as well. Game designer Steve Meretsky, best known for his work on Infocom games from the '80s like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, revealed at a recent panel sponsored by the International Game Developers Association that EA's Pogo and Yahoo! Games also have a user base dominated by women.

I know what you mean, there was a time when it was difficult to find any women which were really into the idea of gaming on the PC, these days it looks to be leveling out a good bit. I was very surprised to see how many Casual Gamers were female, considering that, even though they had high numbers in the Simulation fields and such, they didn't hit that figure.
