In a Business Week poll regarding the world's most innovative companies, readers voted Microsoft #5, Nintendo #7, and Sony #9; this is the first time all three have made it into the top 10.

Some interesting mentions: Apple and Google claimed the top two spots, Wal-Mart hit #23, Facebook #25, McDonald's #30, Starbucks #32, and News Corp. (Myspace, Fox, etc.) #43.

our 2008 list of the World's Most Innovative Companies adds three financial measures to the mix to determine the rankings. For this year's list, votes cast in the proprietary BusinessWeek-BCG survey received 80% of the overall weighting, stock returns were weighted 10%, while three-year revenue and margin growth each got 5%. While these changes -- only votes from our survey counted in the past -- marked the biggest shift yet in our rankings of the World's Most Innovative Companies, there are some similarities to previous years. Once again, Apple's design whizzes lead our list, followed by Google’s search geniuses and Toyota's hybrid car mavens. But the added financial metrics and the greater diversity of our survey, which polled more global and C-suite respondents than ever also helped to produce a few big changes. Global names such as Tata Group and Nintendo, both making their first appearance, landed in the top 10.

Talk about blowing things out of proportion. This is judging the company as a whole, not just the gaming division, and has little to do with innovation in gaming.

Indeed. Only Nintendo can be judged on games alone, as both Sony and Microsoft have sizeable divisions in other categories. This is just 'clutching for straws' news, really.

So, Microsoft had more competitors and still won?

      Thats good news for them.

edit: ah yes. I can see why this would get thumbed down.

Yeah I wouldn't consider Microsoft very innovative at all.....definitely not enough to beat Nintendo.

Did you not read the previous three comments?

I can see why you'd be mistaken, though... the title is clearly misleading. Don't worry; it's generous towards Microsoft, so it'll be edited STAT.

Microsoft and Sony have a lot of other things they compete in so that soudns a bout right for Microsoft to be on top in that poll. Sony second out of the gaming is right and Nintendo last is a bout correct.

This is innovations we are talking about though. Not that it necessarily means Microsoft is the best gaming company. But I could agree they are arguably the most innovative.

And I can cite XBOX Live as being one of the most innovative ideas ever to be delivered to online gaming. Before XBOX Live I never thought it could be so easy to play online and get together with friends online.

Achievements system. Like it or hate it, it's affected games on the 360 in so many ways. Some people are obsessed enough they will just buy games for easy achievement points even if it is a crap game. I mean there are some things about the achievements points system that I hate personally as a gamer. That is one of them. But when you think about it, just the concept of how it has affected gaming like that is just brilliant.

Most Innovative? I will agree they did do some interesting things, but i wouldn't call them the Most innovative. But considering this is just blown out of proportion(from the first comment) and the fact the articles title is misleading, i can see why people would take it the wrong way.

So, this is out of companies in whole? Not just gaming companies? I almost crapped myself when it said Microsoft was the most innovative game company. I agree it is an innovative company, but not the most when it comes down to gaming.
