The reasons they have used to present their case is The DS has reached its Saturation point in Japan, the console itself is getting on a bit, the development in DS games has gone very quiet, all Nintendo consoles have had 3 versions, a spec increase wouldn't hurt, Nintendo loves to combat Piracy and finally downloadable GBA games.

General consensus around the industry recently has tipped the imminent arrival of a new DS, whether it's a new model of the existing machine in a GBA SP sort of way, or an entirely new 'DS 2'.

We contacted Nintendo for a comment and they gave us more than the usual 'rumour and speculation' answer. Which was...

"No announcement has been made by Nintendo and everything reported online is pure speculation and rumour. Our hardware development team always work on the next product after we launch one hardware. It is usual that a new model will be brought to the market when we can not offer new ideas with the current model, but we think Nintendo DS is not at that stage yet, and we'd like to keep offering all sorts of suggestions to enrich the lives of people who own a Nintendo DS."

So the official line is that DS is 'not at that stage yet', huh? Well, we beg to differ. In fact, we can think of seven good reasons DS could not only do with an upgrade or sequel, but in fact why there must be one already being prepped by Nintendo boffins.

While the first thing in my mind which popped up was to dismiss this, I did think of the GBA micro and how odd of a move it was to release it when the DS was right around the corner. But it is true that the DS has saturated most of the Japanese market as the PSP did take April with a landslide over both, the DS and the Wii. Also, it has been a while since the Lite came out.

Give us two touch-(wide)screens, Gamecube-like graphics, an SD card slot, downloadable GBA games, an analog stick, and a nice lineup of quality games, and I'd buy it.

But that would ruin the whole concept of the DS touch screen. I don't think they want to go to that route. But hey who knows.

If even made, then I'd yell "what the Hell were they thinking" and make a million references to the GBA Micro. Nintendo should realize by now, the third revamp of a handheld will suck. Dick.

There have been many mockups for the DS, it could have been one of those

I think it might actually be a half decent idea. If there are ardent DS players who've stuck around with their DS phat, then the touch screen is obviously not in mint condition. And If they missed out on the Lite, then they might actually want to consider buying the third iteration as long as there's still a strong line-up of games until the DS dies. Of course, this is all hypothetical.

Another reason for a new handheld is to maintain their two year release schedule, every two (about) years they release a new handheld, whether new new or new model of the old stuff

The touch screen for the DS is unique to the DS...

If they did release a new model, who knows whether they'd keep it...

Who says it has to stay unique to it. I see no reason for them to get rid of it.

Haha, I haven't even gotten around to obtaining one of the first DS's (nor a DS Lite for that matter). I'm just curious as to how much more they will be able to develop it, or if it will be a failure like the GBA Micro that nobody cared about since the DS had already been released.

Haha, true Chad. Micro came at the wrong time, that's for sure.

I wouldn't care about a possible new DS now that I've got Lite. I'll probably wait until the second version of the next Nintendo handheld is released as well.
