Sega Inks Three-Game Deal with PlatinumGames?

Akira_EX | May 12, 2008 | Industry News | Wii DS Company
PlatinumGames is the studio that was formerly named Seeds, which currently houses ex-employees from the now-defunct Clover Studio. In a now-removed report from Videogaming247, Sega has apparently struck a deal with PlatinumGames to publish its first three titles.

Those three titles are the following (some info via Kotaku):
  • Bayonetta, directed by Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya, an action game featuring a "witch battling angels", with guns on her feet.
  • Infinite Line, a DS Sci-fi RPG where the player is a spaceship captain and can customize ship and crew
  • MadWorld, a Wii title featuring Sin City-styled visuals with red blood. Apparently, it is ultra violent.

However, due to the report being pulled, this can only be classified as a rumor right now.

PlatinumGames, as the former Clover Studio was responsible for the Viewtiful Joe series, Okami, and God Hand.
  • According to a report from Videogaming247 (which itself comes from a now-removed reportedly embargo-breaking story), Sega has signed up to publish three titles from Japanese
    outfit Platinum Games.

The studio, famously formed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and leads from Capcom's closed Clover studio, was founded last year. It was named as one of our top 10 studios to watch at the start of the year.

The games in development for Sega are, reportedly: Bayonetta, directed by Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya, featuring a character with guns on her feet; a DS sci-fi RPG called Infinite Line; and a Wii title called MadWorld allegedly styled like the Sin City comics and movie.

I hope this rumor does end up being true. Clover studios put out some of the most unique and quality titles last generation, and it would be nice to see the minds behind great games like Okami keep producing titles of that quality. It would also be nice for SEGA to publish something that isn't crap-tastic.

All I want from Sega is for them to get Smilebit off thier lazy asses and make the next Jet Set Radio game.

If I recall correctly they announced the new company had been in talks with a major publishing arm. Sega would qualify as quite a strong force in software publishing right now.

Cool to see, I was hoping like many others that it wouldn't be under the arm of MS.
